During the story he visits a collegue in hospital and doesn't know what to say.

Seem to remember it with art by Paul Marshall, set when Volt was Chief Judge?

I think was an early Volume Three Megazine, shortly after the end of "The Three Amigos," wasn't it? Think the title "Killing Time" or something like that springs to mind.

You are quite right. 'Killing Time', Meg 3.09. Has a brilliant bit in it in which Dredd realises he still has several hours of mandatory downtime left and he exclaims 'Damn Volt!'.

My favourite Rennie Dredd ever was the one where he takes his mandatory day off in the Planet Gary boozer. Kind of a sequel to the one in question.
