Everybody here does a lot of good work for charity but doesn't like to talk about it so I thought I'd buck the trend.

As I'm not the sort of person that will ever run a marathon, I thought growing a 'tache for Movember might be just the thing for me to raise a bit of money and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer charities.

If you thought the Dredd promotion was bad, promotion for this must be worse.

3 weeks to console launch and I've yet to see a poster, TV advert or even display in a games shop window. 

Does it actually exist or is it just a brilliant practical joke being played on me by EDGE and NINTENDO OFFICIAL MAGAZINE?

I'm doing my big digital catch up and am focusing on the Prog because, quite frankly, it's miles better than the Meg.  I'm also skipping the Nerve Centre because, quite frankly, my eyesight isn't up to it and I can't be arsed zooming in on the page.

So I just wanted to check that I'm OK just to read all the progs (right up to 1800) without referring to the Megs? There's nothing crossing over is there?

 

Long story made short:

It woudl be very cool if I could get my hands on a Visual Basic Run time control called Greentree Datatree. But to the best of my knowledge and searches, it's showing up as they've gone out of business and you can't download the control from the various shareware sites that were offering it for sale. (all theones I have tried take me to a dead Grentree link that offers me the domain name for sale)

So my moral compass says in this case, it might be OK to try and get a copy of the installable from some torrent site rather than through non-existent legit sources.  So which is best and safest?  And/or, is there another way to get my hands on a copy of the software).   

I don't have license keys but have managed (legitimately) to get my hands on an unlock code (whatever that is).


PS: Can you tell I used to be a mainframe developer and not a PC type fella>

Tiny Tips boight himself a tablet (the rather cool Scroll Excel) with his birthday money but try as I might, I can't get the bugger to play movie files.

We've got digital copies of RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES which should play with Fox's PLays Eeverywhere and also SUPER 8 (Paramount whod it seems can't be arsed with anything other than iPads).

We've managed to get Apes onto the memory card and can see it but whenever we try and play it via various downloadable "foolproof" movie playing apps, we can't see anything other than some flashing lights (rather reminiscent of an old Spectrum loading screen).  And many of the Apps don't even seem to let us see what's on the memory card (despite looking like you cnfigure it to look there, it just always looks on the small tablet memory)

Any suggestions for the best (and genuinely foolproof - I'm a mainframe computer programmer by training and PCs/tablets/smartphones still confuse me now and again) app for playing movies on an Android tablet?

What set ups do you have and how do you get them going?

Off the back of a comment about the fact that there is NOT going to be a comic adaption of the DREDD movie, I was wondering if anybody has actually read a good comic adaption of a movie?

Especially if the movie started out as a comic in the first place?

Or use this as an opportunity to just list the ones you thought were particularly bad and why?

I have fond memories of the ALIEN movie comic adaption.  It had swearing and gore and everything just like the film and if I recall, the art was quite tasty.

However I was presented with the "prequel" to the last Star Trek movie in comic form (it expanded a bit on Nero's back story and what the Next Gen crew were up to helping Spock get launched in his superfast spaceship). The art was nice (ish) but the story managed to suck the fun and life out of the film - and poor old Next Generation has enough people suggesting it did that to Star Trek already.

I think I had an adation of the 1989 Batman movie that sucked as well. If I recall, it used reference photos (stills from the film) in some bits rather than let the artist do their own thang. And they looked terrible in the context of teh strip.  But I may be completely misremembering all of this.

Back in my teens. I used to read a lot of fantasy (very little these days) but still find time to read LOTR and Dune every six or seven years.  Would I like this Game of Thrones stuff?

And what is the 4th book in the sequence? (someone has asked for it for Christmas and I pretended to know what they were on about to seem cool).

(Similarly, I will have to dance to some Swedish House Mafia at our Christmas Do tomorrow because one of the office hotties was calling my bluff)

[Walking With Dinosaurs]

Mmm. Bit of a mixed bag this one. 

I like the bits where John Hurt gives you the evidence that was used as the basis of the theories without them resorting to a dry Professor talking but this also means it jumps around a bit too much.  (I just loved the conceit that Walking With Dinosaurs used of "imagine a wildlife documentary on dinosaurs").

And the overall look and feel of the effects is very plastic.  You get the odd bit in HD that looks gobsmacking but generally the program looks cheap.

Tiny Tips also pointed out that scale is an issue.  Often, the Dinosaurs are shown in giant forests beside massive ferns and gigantic trees. Which makes them look kind of small.

Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying it but basically, it's just reminded how much better Walking With Dinosaurs was, and that can't be a good thing for a programme to do.

It came to my attention the other night that I might have bumped into some members of the board, even if the board and comic conventions etc.  didn't exist.

The 2011 Dundee Comics Day welcomes a stellar line-up of talent to Dundee.
Answering the question "what can comics teach us?" will be John Wagner,
Frank Quietly, Cam Kennedy, Colin MacNeil and Robbie Morrison.
There will also be talks by noted comics historian Paul Gravett, who will be
discussing his new book 1001 Comics You Must Read Before You Die, as well as
Martin Conaghan and Will Pickering (creators of the Burke & Hare graphic novel),
and Phil Vaughan and Jamie Bryan, who work on the interface between comic,
computer games and animation.

We're welcoming an incredible array of comic talent to Dundee, designed to appeal
to everyone with an interest in comics, and will be accessible to the general public,

Anybody else lose any posts?

I read a couple of these Pirates books (by Gideon Defoe?) four or five years ago and really enjoyed them.

So imagine my dismay/delight* when I saw a poster for a movie of them at our local Odeon.

How dare they take these much loved family favourites, rape my childhood and turn them into synthetic Hollywood blockbuster crap.
Or
How brilliant that these are being done by Aardman animations - I can't think of a better fit between source material and a company that might do it justice.*

*Pick one of the above two opinons depending on your attitude. Remember, you don't need to have any facts or seen any footage or pictures to back you up.

Oh and I wonder if Jennifer Garner will be played by a plasticene Jennifer Garner?

I switched to digital progs around 5 months ago and have only managed to read about ten issues.  So I'm way behind.  I struggle to find the time to sit down in front of the PC uninterrupted and read a prog.  And now I've got a backlog of 3 and half months worth to catch up on, there's even less chance.

Naturally, when I was a subscriber reading the prog was a doddle. It would go with me on train or bus journeys or, more often than not bed or the bog. 

I'm planning on building in an appointment for Monday nights at 1030pm where I sit down and read the latest prog with a cup of tea (but it's hard when you have a wife and kids, something *always* comes up that needs seeing to right away). 

Any other hints and tips?

Does anyone else have the same problem or do you all have tablets?

For reasons slightly too complicated to go into, I ended up watching a couple of Bollywood compilations on YOUTUBE tonight and now I've got it into my head that I actually fancy sitting down with Mrs Tips and watching some Bollywood movies all the way through.

Not sure what to pick though; Gorgeous women and incredibly handsome men doing incredibly over the top song and dance routines are a requirement and, fortunately, with Bollywood that seems to be a given. 

So what have people seen and what do they recommend?

Having suffered weeks of thrill power starvation, I no whaveten digital progs to read.  I plan to wake tomorrow morning, fill my oversized Batman mug with coffee and start reading.  But how should I do it?

Should I read it as a theme? i.e. read all of the Dredd episodes, then go back and read all of the Flesh epiosdes and then all of the Ampney episodes?

Or should I just read each prog in it's entirity before moving on?

What would you do?

Anyway, the whole family Tips enjoyed this tight sci-fi thriller. Nice performances all round, some nice twists and turns, great pace (curiously though this tails off during what can only be called the [spoiler]Groundhog Day [/spoiler] resolution) and my goodness doesn't Chicago look stunning.  The second action movie I've seen in a year where the hero spends much of the time sat down talking (the other was UNSTOPPABLE - also on a train).

Negative points: And it's a VERY BIG ONE. It doesn't work if you think about how it's meant to work. And what happens to poor Sean Fentress?

Having recently moved the HDTV up to the big room, I was thinking of getting an upscaling DVD player with either wi-fi or ethernet to allow me to stream movies from the PC and possibly a built in BBC iPlayer.

Is that just a PS3 then?

My PC has given up the ghost and despite backing most things up, it seems pretty hard to get my contact details from an ancient Outlook Express (probably installed ten years ago) into Outlook 2010.
