Announcements / Re: Doodles for Dave

One more for this.

Now that the dust has settled and we've totted everything up we're proud to announce that we raised £600 for SOBS UK at Thought Bubble this month.

Like it says in the picture - we couldn't have done this without the incredible and generous support of countless people. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Please reach out to SOBS, or to anyone, if you're feeling overwhelmed or you can't cope. You are not alone - no one is an island and people do care and want to help ❤

Announcements / Re: The Letters Beast - Online!

I bring a response from Louis Carter which comes in from the wildlands off the forum:

QuoteHi all,

For some reason, I haven't been able to log on for years now, so I'm asking Owen to post this for me.

I certainly didn't mean to come across as angry. The subject of my email when I sent it to Tharg was "A satirical letter about  the regened argument." With hindsight, given that so many regened nay-sayers come across as angry to me, it was perhaps inevitable that I would come across as angry when trying to emulate them. Oh well.

The point of my argument is that no 2 readers will agree on which thrills are good. And this is an intrinsic part of the prog.

There are people saying that the regened progs are shit and Tharg should stop publishing them.

If they get their way, I would like to get mine too, hence asking for the cancelling of Thrills that I'm not that into.

But that's not going to happen, because some people *do* like them. I don't get their tastes, and I'm sure others don't get mine. My tastes include a general appreciation of the regened prog (I generally like the new stuff, I think we could do without Cadet Dredd and the kidyfying of other old school stuff).

So I'm not trying to have my cake and eat it, I'm saying that everyone eats different parts of the cake. My tastes vary wildly from many on this forum. If many of the reviewers in the review threads had their way, I'd probably have stopped reading the prog long ago.

That's the nature of anthologies, is something often said on this forum, but it's something that seems to be forgotten when the regenes roll round.

Also, Tharg edited a sentence out of my letter. This sentence addresses Buttonman's point that even the multiple slices of cake argument is no excuse for sub-par content.

After saying that there is so much prog to enjoy, I point out that much of it is Skip Tracer, and we should all gang up on that instead. Even my easy-goingness have a limit. I don't know how people are arguing so much about regened, when ST surely takes up more page space per year.

I'm happy to be proven wrong on the maths there, it could just be a perception thing. I'm also happy to admit that  ST's author is obviously well skilled at the one thing Tharg values above all other, in that they produce scripts that tell a story, to a deadline. With everyone having such diverse tastes, I think that's all that Tharg can really ask for of his writers.

We'll be at Table 138 in the Comixology Hall - the photos on this thread keep disappearing but here's that news in image form:

Where we'll be at Thought Bubble this coming weekend - sandwiched between the glorious PigDog Press with the hyper talented Neil McClements and the evergreen small press royalty of Lizzie & Conor's Disconnected Press.

Thank you all so much for the hundreds of sketches we've received prior to the event - and to the brilliant support from SOBS. We'll also be taking (and doing our own) sketches across the weekend!

Received the banner for our Thought Bubble show - beautifully designed by the glorious Jim Campbell with artwork (and permission from) the amazing Rufus Dayglo.

Thank you so much for all the sketches so far, and we've even received some additional raffle prizes. Your generosity is awe inspiring thank you.

I think I've worded this badly - it's more artists doing new doodles than selling off the sketches of his you have! I'm not asking you to give those up  :o

Hi again everyone.

Thought Bubble have generously allowed FutureQuake's table this year to be entirely committed to this endeavour:

Our Bolt was forever doodling on little square bits of paper at conventions, giving them away with issues, they'd fall out of your copies if you ordered them from us. They were so integral to our memory of him that it seemed right to put everything aside and doodle. Bring them to the table, or DM us for an address to send them to if you're unable to attend the event. You can buy them for whatever price you feel like and there will also be a raffle of 2000 AD goodies very kindly donated directly from the Nerve Centre itself.

The charity we've been requested to donate everything to is SOBS. We've reached out to them ourselves and they are a kind and responsive bunch, we'll have literature for them there if you need it but they are there and they will listen.

Now pens and pencils out, let's get drawing!

Thanks to everyone who contacted me - it was a deeply cathartic day, painful but beautiful and a very real convention hotel bar vibe emerged in the evening which I'm sure people will be comforted by.

The "stream" of the ceremony will be available in the week for 28 days or so, so do contact me if you want access to it and I'll pass the details along to you. Or, for anything at all of course, we are none of us an island and help is always there, even if your mind tells you doggedly that it's not.

Okay, after some discussion, it's been decided the link shouldn't be put here, publicly viewable on the forum - so if anyone wants the link, give me a buzz either here via PM, on FB, twitter etc etc I'm everywhere as @owenwattsdraws

Cheers everyone - I hope you're all holding up okay <3

I've been asked by Bolt's family to share a Zoom link for the funeral on the forum for the ceremony this Friday afternoon - not sure if it would be more appropriate for it to be in this thread or somewhere else. Mods, feel free to message me on this subject if you can think of the most appropriate way to go about this.

So yes, just to let you know, if you want to pay your respects and you feel comfortable with it, it's happening this Friday at three-ish.

and another today from Tony Rothwell :)

From Blackmocco / Mick Cassidy - the gallery over on our FB page will be open indefinitely to tributes so if folk have any doodles or drawings they want to contribute whenever they feel ready let us know.

Paying back all the creativity he got out into the world is going to be the work of a lifetime.

Quote from: Hawkmumbler on 28 May, 2021, 10:11:26 PMFuck. I wish I had headed his advice, listened to my gut and started writing sooner. I'm really sorry Dave.

Just saw this - don't beat yourself up for not being more "proactive" Hawk - you'll create when you're good and ready sir - and the creation will be better for the space you've given it to grow. Not everyone is a Ron Smith - but I can guarantee you every hero you ever had feels the same pressure, the same regret, the same yearning to just get on with it. Bolt did too, and he would have never have judged you for it <3

This was sent to the FQP FB page by one Jonathan Macho - who, with his brother, has done an adorable *response* to one of Dave's wonderfully unexpected "you've bought some our comics so I'm going to draw you summat" sketches. I'm sure we're all familiar with the thrill of opening your order from FutureQuake and seeing a Dredd, a Tharg, a Kid Knee or in this case...

There are some things you can never repay, but it would have been great to have a little longer to try.

Ohhhh this really got to me - and you say you're not the "words guy" indeed!

Beautiful picture, they've all been really lovely but this one feels deeply personal.
