Hi,

I was wondering what people's opinion of CG-enhanced art in strips is. Not straightforward colouring as such, more the equivalent of fully painted art which is done by the same artist.

Is it here to stay or is it a trend like the fully painted strips that became common after the Horned God?

I think it would be great to see an interview in the meg with those artists who use it, especially with regards to the reasons for switching - i.e. was it purely an economic decision or a creative one.

I do think the dinos are pretty weak looking, more Far Side than Jurassic Park.

Didn't John Burns criticise some aspect of Simon F's art on Dante in a Meg interview?

I'd hope he's big enough to take criticism himself.

I'm pretty sure it was Dan Dare, wasn't the deal with the Biogs that all the hardware was living, spaceships etc? So a living axe makes sense.

Then I think Kevin O'Neill drew one for that Tharg one that was mentioned...

It *was* 27 years ago - my memory's a little hazy.

Actually I wouldn't mind seeing Dan Dare reprinted or collected for the art alone - wonder if there are any legal problems regarding the rights to the character?

The only living axe I can remember was (I think) in the Belardinelli Dan Dare. (Maybe used by the biogs on Jupiter?)

The UK Games Industry has been pretty unsettled for the last year or so, a lot of the smaller companies went under or were bought out, and some of the larger companies have had problems as well (Argonaut for example)

I was working for Climax London, but our team got laid off at Christmas when the project was canned.

The trend seems to be to hire contactors rather than permanent staff so they can ramp up and down staff without worrying about redundancy payments etc. Salaries have remained pretty static (or decreased) in the past couple of years as the job market has changed. The weak dollar hasn't helped UK developers either.

It's not just the UK though, EA LA have laid off 60 people recently.

The next couple of years are going to be interesting - the next-gen consoles PS3/Xbox2 are going to require higher quality art which will be more expensive to produce. There's already talk of outsourcing art/creating art procedurally/an increase in game prices to cover this.

I remember them doing that with the Son of Mean Machine story. Are there any other stories which had more than one version of the same part?

It's a tricky one - I think most of the bad choices I've seen tended to be one-offs (usually on Dredd) where a big name would be brought in. (Sam Keith?).

I thought the choice of Simon Harrison on Strontium Dog jarred, but a change from years of Ezquerra was always going to be a little odd.

I'm just glad that the art is generally excellent after the fully painted trend of the 90s.

Thinking about it, it would be an interesting experiment as a one-off to see what two artists made of the same strip, in the vein of cover variants (though obviously a lot more expensive).

Hi,

I saw a couple of t-shirts in Forbidden Planet the other day (One Dredd Mugshot by Henry Flint, and another one by   Jock).

These aren't in the online shop on this site, and I forgot to take a look who made them - does anyone know if there are others out there?
