Week 3 of Round 3 is 'One and Done' week with no fewer than 3 of the surviving Future Shockesque stories appearing. They all have very interesting ties and ... well we'll see. In my mind though, intriguing as those clashes are, is a modern masters face-off that is one of the ties of the Round for me, not everyone I imagine, but for me...
Two modern classics in one of the ties of the round for me. Kingdom has got Whet with Carver Hale in Round 2. Proteus Vex saw off Zippy Couriers. Now they meet in a tie that will leave at least one Tournament organiser in tears.

Match ends early on the morning of Friday 27th May and the winner gets a place in Round 4 (of 9!!!).

Kingdom
Kingdom.
Proteus has made a strong start but Kindom may be the perfect 2000 Ad story.
Kingdom
A harsh draw. We may look back on Proteus Vex as a Nikolai Dante-style classic in years to come. It's already among the best modern thrills in the Prog. But Kingdom for me is one of the best strips to ever appear in the weekly.
Very difficult one but I will go with Proteus Vex
Kingdom, which effortlessly created a character and world to rank among the true classics of 2000AD.
Proteus Vex has done nearly enough to join that pantheon... but needs a little more. I feel absolutely sure it will get there very soon.
SBT
I want to like Proteus Vex more than I do but for some reason I struggle with it. Maybe a reread would help get my head around it.
Anyway, Kingdom, which I have adored since the first episode.

A character, a world, and a language!
Proteus Vex
Oh man!
I just love Dan Abnett and the fact that Kingdom is my 7th or 8th favourite of his just shows how brilliant he is.
I really want Proteus Vex to be brilliant. It's exactly the kind of thrill we need in the Prog. A modern classic space opera with weird aliens. A spiritual successor to Nemesis (albeit with a different message) or Shakara.
But I'm torn. Dan's strips just have a certain quality in the reading experience, which Is kind of effortless. Very few 2000AD writers can match that (e.g. Wagner, Mills, Alan Moore....).
But this is looking like a landslide and there is no way I'll be voting Kingdom over Brink, Lawless or Insurrection so it's not a final contender for me. So given that I'll give a bit of love to Proteus Vex.
Kingdom
Proteus Vex is full of things to admire, but it's a bowl of all-bran compared to the crunchy nut cornflakes that is Kingdom. Goes down easy, and always room for a second bowl!
Kingdom.
love the art. don't care for either story. abstain.
For all those Proteus Vex fans:
Michael Carroll
Here we go again...! :)

Proteus Vex is on an upward trajectory (and was pretty damn good to start with!) but Kingdom was out of the traps like a whippet (did we ever see an Aux whippet?) and never let up.
Kingdom
Kingdom
Kingdom. Definitely in my top 5 all-time thrills, still hoping to see further adventures of Gene dog.
I'm abstaining, of course, but if I hadn't written Proteus Vex I'd probably have voted for Kingdom myself. It's one of my favourite comic-strips of all time. There's no shame in losing to something so good!
The first volume of Kingdom in the Ultimate Collection was the point I knew I was in for the long haul. One of those series that hits the ground running and just keeps going. I love Proteus Vex but my vote goes to the bestest boy Gene Kingdom
Proteus Vex.
Cheers
I really like Proteus Vex - it's nonchalantly wandered into the prog and just been very, very good while also being very much its own thing.
Kingdom's a weird one - it launched at such a height that it's trajectory was always going to be difficult to maintain, and over time there was a sense that my love for it, and my desire for more, could never be matched in print. And so there were some moments where I felt like it wasn't quite working - and kept destroying what had been built in previous series. But I wouldn't care so much if I didn't care so much.
They're both great thrills in their own right. What does it come down to, then? Vex is too enigmatic to quite fit the mold of hero. Gene, on the other hand, is always just doing what he feels is right - regardless of the consequences. Tougher and tough.
Kingdom
Tough one this, but I will give Proteus Vex the nod.
The recent series was a winter highlight.
Whatever happens here we lose a superb thrill and its good to see both getting praise. Keep it up today and I'll wrap it up in the morning. The more we talk about great thrills like these the more we remember how lucky we are.
Assuming Proteus Vex goes out, that and Devlin should have their own competition of greats ejected from the competition while the likes of flipping Fr1day sail on.

That's the kinda thing that Broodblik excels at.

Yes I can add those of the lost gems for a sideshow vote
Under the current state of democracy, I declare PROTEUS VEX the winner...*cough*

Exactly. It's obvious to anyone who believes it that all right-thinking individuals would only vote for
Proteus Vex, therefore anyone who didn't was misguided and their votes should be discarded.

I think you are all missing the point of me running these tournaments. As any major 'sporting' body I'm wickly corrupt and if you want any adjustment to voting I need the appropriate ... budget shall we say... to carry out the administration involved.
Preferably from a luxary boat in some sunny, tropical cove or other.
PM me with brides appropriate offers for research budgets...
It's "binders full of women" all over again.
VOTING (AND OPPORTUNITY TO ...AFFECT THE RESULT) CLOSED
Well you can't say I didn't give Mike Carroll and JTPegg every chance...
...Its testament to their thrill that Proteus Vex a relatively new thrill has even challenged the almost perfect 2000ad story. I was really said to see this draw, but its good to get used to these super hard decisions. Its also good to see so much love for the eventual 'loser' and both thrills getting the praise they deserve. There is little denying though that
Kingdom
Will be slicing it up in Round 4.
Doggos beat (cool) cats.
Inevitable.
When will we learn, democracy is NOT for the people!?
Huge CONGRATULATIONS to KINGDOM - a worthy winner!
