how about the manner in which morrison and hughes sharpen their story towards a place where - using the real world experiences of one of the most revered comic creators of all in frank hampson - obvious affection for the character becomes a smart expose of creator rights (or lack of them) in the comics industry of not so long ago? that, i suggest, was subversion. as was the satire, the retro design, the skewering of the jingoistic cynicism that lies behind most political sloganeering, the commentary on what the implications and consequences of apparently throw away comic panels from back in the day would actually be.
all of this was only possible because of our collective preconceptions of what a dan dare entertainment might be.
i think it's still relevant and thought-provoking. and i had never read anything like it before.
(i like it, anyway).

i think it was the most hackneyed work of garth's career. usually the master of confounding and shocking writing, in this instance everything is wholly predictable.
give me grant morrison's superb and disturbing subversion of dare instead, please.

love the art. don't care for either story. abstain.

selfishly, i yearn to see a proper and respectful collection of ian kennedy's stirling work on the licence.

we've had the garth ennis and pete milligan revivals, both of which were problematic in different ways.

dredd arrests an entire sov ship.
the full on apparent horror of the mess is unleashed in the abcs.
gfd continues to have rude non-canonical invasion fun in a flooded england.
belardinelli sculpts some freaky dreams for our favourite space-faring roman gladiator.
the mind of wolfie smith evokes some real evil in the form of matthew hobb.

captain klep!

writers - john wagner, alan grant, gerry finley-day, tom tully and pat mills
artists - massimo belardinelli, ron smith, carlos pino, ian gibson and brendan mccarthy (with a zarjaz colour spread).

what a roster.

oh man. and what a brilliant cover by ron.

chernobyl - the zone by natacha bustos and francisco sanchez.
a graphic novel published by centrala a few years ago ... i've been reading it now, for obvious reasons, but i wish i'd discovered it long before. i'm not going to spoiler it, because the story is so affecting, and intelligently crafted in order to speak to every possible reader. It's form, brilliantly, is that of a slavic doll, constantly opening to reveal new characters and ideas and plot lines. the dialogue is sparse but shockingly sharp and right. the art is a mixture of accomplished clean lines and apocalyptic scrawl.
it's a magnificent achievement, a disturbing and moving entertainment with so much to say about now.

they're definitely not running out - don't they own nearly all the history of british comics?! and i absolutely loved it when they started using the floppy to reprint weird wonders from way back in the day before thrillpower. more of those please!
