« on: Today at 05:10:39 PM »I’ve only read one or two episodes of this. I’ve read that it’s horribly sexist and also awful in general but I do love Belardinelli so wouldn’t mind if they snuck it into a floppy. Maybe it’s too embarrassing for Tharg to present to new readers though!
I don't think it's SO sexist it couldn't be reprinted - it's kinda like 'Dynasty in Space', and as it was written in the 80s anyway it's kind of fittingly sexist - an example of an 80s man trying to imagine what it might be like if women had some agency (heart in the right place and so on). The main problem is it doesn't know how to marry up corporate shenanigans with space trucker action, and some makes both more boring than they are.

To an extent, I think more artists have tried to make their work look like Bolland than have ever tried to ape McMahon or Smith, but it seems to take them so long I'm not sure it counts as massively influential. (Bolland didn't actually draw that many episodes of Dredd, but he still managed more than e.g. Robinson, Weston, Sharp and Foster)
I'd count Kennedy, Flint and Lynch as acolytes of the McMahon school, but even then I think a lot fo the energy they bring kinda comes from Smith. As Huey2 says above, he worked on the strip for so long during arguably its most popular period, and as such set an eternal template for Dredd and his world as a place that has loony energy, darkly comic violence with a sarcastic, quippy central 'hero' in Dredd himself. So I'm voting Smith, but really he was following McMahon's lead.

I note that the cover for the upcoming 'Best of Gerry Finley-Day' fails to have Ant Wars shown on there. but it MUST be on the inside, surely..?
I'm voting Fiends of the Eastern Front, please. But Ant Wars might be a close second in terms of both having a simple, well-told idea told efficiently and excitingly. Frankly, though, that list of 6 options is astonishingly good! His episodes of Invasion and Dan Dare are pretty good, too.

I'm VERY keen to know what what make a person "need" to get their hands on the complete series of Moonrunners! I don't think a full set of the relevant back progs would set you back by much, and there are a LOT of good strips in that era.

LOVED Hope this week, some amazing imagery in there, even if I am totally lost about whatever the plot of this series is. Someone is killing people on a film set, I guess? Hope is theoretically investigating but has zero clues?
Agree that Dexter ended a bit too quickly and easily, but overall a fun diversion and Bettin is gettin better each time.
I continue to be disappointed that Fiends is no longer about the clash of the horrors of war with the horrors of vampirism, and has become yet another Ian Edginton mash-up of supernatural beasties from around the world/across the ages, with a vague wartime setting. I'm really struggling to find a story there to get invested in! At least it's gorgeous to look at.

The whole arc of Warrior's Dawn is indeed the best Sláine there is.
More specifically, my vote goes the The Bride of Crom: the blood eagles, the Badb, the Wicker Man, most-grotesque warp-out EVER and he's fighting zombies!
(but because it's not the same thing, I'll note that my favourite Sláine arc is 100% Tomb of Terror)

It is weird comparing one-off shorts to a mega-long-running series, but frankly in this case both are SUCH a big part of the Prog, both with their heydays around the same time, that it feels like a fair fight. That said, I find it hard to get as excited about a set of one-offs compared to getting lost in the glory of 'one-man's mission' narratives. I would also say that, for all that Rogue Trooper is an action series, his whole thing of being a grumpy loner who is better at soldeiring than anyone he encounters, really makes the point that WAR IS HELL so effectively I give it a lot of bonus points. I might've wanted to be Johnny Alpha, or Nemesis, or even, in darker momnets, Judge Dredd, but I've never wanted to actually be Rogue - no thanks!

Man this is tough. Hard to argue with Funt Solo's logic...
but on the other hand, I have bought and read two FAT collections of Future Shocks, which inlcude plenty of bad alongside the good, and reached for them far more quickly than my Insurrection books. Insurrection really IS great, although perhaps less amazingly so now that we have Lawless.
