Help! / Re: Dredd's vices...
26 November, 2009, 01:32:38 AM
Cheers for the quick responses guys. Just that I have an idea for a future shock based around a bar but set in Dredd's world. Might have to relocate it to one of the other  cities. Haven't really plotted it out yet anyway.

Help! / Dredd's vices...
26 November, 2009, 12:43:38 AM
Hey. Was just wondering if Dredd and the other Judges drink/smoke at all. My knowledge of day to day life the MC1 is limited at best and I'm not sure if they are allowed or if alcohol even features in the strips...

Creative Common / First attempt at a comic script
24 November, 2009, 11:00:30 AM
Hey there. Thought I'd post this and see if you guys can offer any pointers as to do with format. This is a very quick two page script I threw together. I know the dialogue is a bit ropey but I just wanted to get a feel for how to write it in a clear and descriptive way. Anyway, have a look and tell me what I did wrong.  :D

PANEL 1
Exterior view of a typical pub. A sign hangs above the door. It reads 'The Horse & Carrot'. It is night and rain is pouring down. Light through the window illuminates the wet street outside. A man holding an umbrella is about to enter.

Caption: "It was a horrible night. Just the way I like it."

PANEL 2
Interior of the pub. View from over the shoulder of the barman. The man from outside has entered and is shaking his umbrella fry by the door. The pub itself is not unusual; tables are arranged around the floor,a fire crackles merrily in the grate and a range of beer fonts are on the bar. The pub is empty.

Caption: "On a night like that, only the foolish or the brave venture outside."

PANEL 3
Close up of the customer's face. He is late middle aged, wrinkled with receding hair and wearing spectacles. The collar of his raincoat is pulled up around his neck.

CUSTOMER
"A hauf o' eighty, son"

Caption: "A comedian?"

PANEL 4
Finally we see the barman's face. He is mid-twenties, has short hair and an impressive beard. He is not pleased. A misanthrope, jaded beyond his years, this is BAR MAN, with the power of indignation. His face is curled in a sneer, a tic turning one eye into a slit.

PANEL 5
BAR MAN is pouring the customer's drink, drawing it from a traditional hand pull font. We see him from behind in silhouette. The customer has noticed the rage blossoming within our hero.

CUSTOMER
"Smile son. You might like it."

Caption: "Mistake."

PANEL 6
BAR MAN turns his full attention to the customer. This man who has disturbed his peace and dared to try and advise him on how to do his job.

BAR MAN
"I'm sorry, have I offended you in some way? What were you expecting? A welcome CHORUS?!"

CUSTOMER
"Wha...?"

PANEL 7
Over the next three panels, there are three close ups of the customer's face as it melts (Raiders style) under the power of BAR MAN's indignation. Each successive panel will show the damage getting worse and worse still.

BAR MAN (O.O.F.)
"I'm sick of you people, coming in here at this time of night and expecting service with a smile."

PANEL 8
BAR MAN
"What kind of service do you think minimum wage buys? And you have to cheek to tell me to cheer up!"

PANEL 9
BAR MAN
"Do you think I chose this career? No! My hopes and dreams lie shattered beneath my feet and I have to put up with mouth-breathers like you! But maybe you're right. Maybe I should just SMILE!"

PANEL 10
The customer falls backwards to the ground, dead. His head, a molten mess, is still steaming.

BAR MAN
"And now you've made a mess!"

Ends

I should say that I did format this in final draft but apparently the formatting doesn't translate onto the site  :-[

As I say I have dabbled in a litte bit of everything. Just family history has led me down the corporate road (dad's collection of first runs). Despite that though, probably my favourite comic book experience is the Dredd vs Death story. Well that or Watchmen  :D

Welcome to the board / Hello Everyone

Hi. Thought I'd post in here before I pop up somewhere else and some shouts about etiquette.

As you'd expect I'm a big fan of comic books. If I'm being honest, I have been more Marvel/DC in the past than 2000AD but that's not to say I haven't read a fair few of the Dredd strips.
I am in the process of learning how to properly script comics at the moment. I have done a bit of everything when it comes to creative outlets; stage plays, screenplays, short stories, photography, arts reviews etc.

Hope I can pick up some advice and pointers from you guys.

Look forward to talking to you all
