Film & TV / Blake's 7 - the early years
14 August, 2013, 01:15:22 PM
Hour long audio dramas recounting the origin stories of the Liberator's crew, currently airing on Radio4Extra at 6pm (repeated at midnight): http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00sp6cg/episodes/guide

last night's 'Travis' episode was okay but not overwhelming - I was pretty knackered and didn't make it through to the end; but the first one about Zen I thought was excellent (still available to listen).

Anyone heard the others? Are any of them particularly worth catching (or avoiding)?

I've just found some printer cartridges for my old Dell printer/scanner - which no longer works 'cos it isn't supported by Windows 7. As printer ink is stupidly expensive and they're no good to me, if anyone here can use 'em they're yours.

I have  2 x DELL M4646 Colour cartridges and 1 x DELL M4640 Black

Just PM your address if you want them.

Help! / DirectX my arse!
21 April, 2012, 09:02:58 AM
I've no drokking idea what a "DirectX" component is or why my game needs them to run, but they're pissing me off.

I reinstalled windows this week and now my favourite game (Civilization 4) won't run, either from disc or from my steam account. I get a message saying that the renderer has failed or something (i'll post more details if anyone thinks they can help).  It advises me to check my DirectX settings or video card, but doesn't say how.

I think that one of the many windows updates and/or service packs has upgraded me to DirectX 11 when I need DirectX9, but I have no idea of what or where it is or what to do about it.

I hate computers sometimes.

Help! / hELP I've been virused
10 December, 2011, 05:14:14 PM
My PC has picked up a nasty virus that I can't seem to get rid of. I googled it ("metropolitan police Ukash virus" - it basically claims the police have locked an illegal PC and I must pay a fine to unlock it) and found websites advising me which registry entries I need to delete, but when I try it just says "could not delete the selected file".

AVG antivirus doesn't work. Basically, if I log in as myself, NOTHING is possible, not even task manager, I can still pretend to be my second user and get in though, but without system admin permissons.

Any advice of a good free virus killer that may work, or how to delete stubborn registry entries?

Events / An Evening with Dave Gibbons - 12th Oct
07 October, 2011, 04:41:24 PM
As part of the "Dr Who in Comics" exhibition at The National Cartoon Museum, (35 Little Russell St, London WC1A 2HH), Dave Gibbons will be appearing on 12th October 6.30-7.30 (not much of an evening surely?) to discuss his career, including his Dr Who work. Tickets £4-£6

http://www.cartoonmuseum.org/

I found this while looking for things to do in London week after next (any suggestions?). Annoyingly I'll actually be flying in and out of Heathrow that day on business but won't have a chance to get into the town for this.

Film & TV / Chris Weston vs Dr Who
20 August, 2011, 05:22:01 PM
The Saturday Guardian has a feature called The Conversation, in which two people take opposing sides on a topic. In today's paper, art droid Chris Weston takes on Anthony Wainer of the Dr Who Appreciation Society - seems Mr Weston is definitely NOT a fan!

This may be old news to many, but after finding vol.1 in the library recently, I picked up all 5 volumes of J Michael Straczynski's RISING STARS and really enjoyed it. Not exactly groundbreaking but a refreshing take on the superhero genre, with a Midwich Cuckoos overtone and several neat twists (
the obviously corrupt flag-draped corporate sellout murderer turns out to be innocent eventually, and the return of the kid who floated away was also cool.
) Anyone else read these?

Lots of ads for other Top Cow stuff in the back - I've read a couple of the Witchblade books from the library and didn't care for them much, but don't think I've read any other TC titles - any thoughts on others, eg The Darkness?

Books & Comics / Comic Heroes #7
20 July, 2011, 05:12:48 PM
This issue concentrates on Batman. Despite the exorbitant price, I do find I read more of this than any other mag, especially it's parent title SFX, so it's not bad value compared to most magazine purcahses.

Reason I'm posting however is the free gift - a large double sided poster featuring a tasty Judge Dredd by Jock on one side and Kev O'Neill's LOEG Century on the other - Since I don't do posters and this would just end up in a drawer, does anyone want it? PM me you address and it's yours.

Also included was a crappy glow-in-the dark Green Lantern ring (for someone with tiny fingers!), and the preview comic features Carry on Judging from the new restricted files.

Had to i-player this as they switched nights and I missed it. Still available -  Britain's greatest comics writer reveals hidden secrets of WWII.

Help! / Help - Disk drive is on strike!
20 February, 2011, 03:42:06 PM
The CD/DVD drive on my PC has stopped recognising DVDs and CD-ROMs. It still seems to be able to recognise and rip audio CDs, but if I insert a game disk or a DVD, the autoplay doesn't kick in, and if I try to open the D:/ drive, or run the game, it tells me to insert a disk.

The PC is a custom build but with pirated Windows 7, apparently. For ages I've been ignoring regular pop-ups that tell me 'windows is not genuine' as everything has still worked okay, apart from wallpapers and screensavers. Could this be behind it, or is it likely to be a physical problem with the disk drive itself?

Any help or advice?

Events / Batman Live - Arena Tour 2011
13 November, 2010, 08:32:05 PM
Anyone heard about this? http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2010/11/details-emerge-on-batman-live-arena-tour-updated/?

Looks like they've crammed in as many of the well-known characters as possible, but doesn't really say if it's aimed at a young audience, like the Dr Who Live tour, or a darker more mature audience as per the movies. I may need to borrow somebody's children as an excuse to see this!

The article mentions the Spiderman musical which seems to be having all kinds of problems making it to the stage - which may not be a bad thing!

Okay, can anyone who understands computers help me with a couple of problems? (non-cheese related solutions only please!)

1. I have a digital SLR camera that takes compact flash cards. On my old PC (windows xp)  I used to just whack the card in the inbuilt slot and download my pics. That PC died and my new one running windows 7 won't play the game. It says I need to format my removable storage medium before I can use it - but if I do that I'll wipe all my photos right? The old PC can now only be run using a Ubuntu disk as windows won't load. I've tried to copy the pictures on to a memory stick that way, but cannot seem to open the CF card to view it's contents with this OS. I could always pay to have the pics transferred to a CD, but that's no good in the long run.

2. Can a different ISP really increase my internet speed? I don't see how this would work, as I'm using the same hardware, same phone socket and the signal is going down the same cables to the same telephone exchange. I'm using Tiscali (now Talk Talk) and usually get 1.5 or 1.6 mbps (my package is "up to" 8mbps). Virgin promises more, but is it just advertising bullshit?

Help me obi-wan hivemeind - you're my only hope!

Help! / HELP! settings for LG cookie phone
11 August, 2010, 10:46:25 AM
Help me hivemind!

My phone (LG cookie) keeps unlocking in my pocket and repeatedly ringing people from my address book (17 calls to 3 people in the space of 10 minutes last week!). I want to set a PIN code to unlock the handset.

In Settings > security there are 3 options:
1. PIN code Required: on/off
2. Handest lock
3. Change codes

If I select 1, it asks me to input a pin code, but has no OK/enter button (presumably because it does not yet have a code)

If I select 2, it asks me when I want it to lock (when switched on, when SIM changed, immediately, never etc)

If I select 3, I have 3 more options:
a)PIN code - gives me the message : "SET PIN CODE REQUEST ON"
b)PIN2code - asks me to enter PIN, but again no OK button
c)Security code - asks me to input current security code.

The instruction book is useless. It just says:  Settings > security "will allow me to adjust my security settings, including PIN codes and handset lock" Very bloody helpful!

Can anyone tell me how I can set my code?

Help! / weekend in the Toon - suggestions?
06 August, 2010, 02:20:50 PM
I was due to attend a festival near Newcastle on weekend of 20th Aug, which has now been cancelled. They've offered tickets to another fest, but I already have train tickets and I'm undecided whether to accept the swap or just have a weekend in Newcastle.

A quick search of 'what's on' sites hasn't revealed much of interest, so beyond going on the lash (without coat of course), does anyoine have any suggestions of things to do on my own in the Toon? Also cheap hotels or campsites close to the centre, comic shops etc.

Off Topic / Lib-Dems are anti Dredd!
27 July, 2010, 02:43:31 PM
Commenting on the (disgraceful) move to have our police run by elected US-style commissioners, Lib Dem MP Tom Brake said:

Without "tough checks and balances" the proposals could be seen as "a green light for the election of Judge Dredd characters more interested in populism than effective co-operative policing"

I get his point, but it shows a shameless lack of understanding of Dredd - not exactly someone who'd bend law enforcement for populist political motives!

I assume he means that flog-em-and-hang-em tough guys would get elected on Daily Mail style scare campaigns about rampaging hordes of muties immigrants causing a crime wave.

Help! / Adding fonts in Open Office -HELP!
29 June, 2010, 05:59:28 PM
I've downloaded a few free fonts from Blambot. Now, on my old PC using windows xp and MS Word, I simply had to install the downloads and they became available in the font-list for Word, photoshop and all the other applications that used text.

However, I'm on a new Windows 7 PC and using Open Office. I downloaded and installed the fonts - but still unable to access them. Do I need to import them into OpenOffice? I've copied the files from the "downloads" folder into the "fonts" folder. (And am I the only one who find the explorer layout in win7 confusing? - XP showed everything in a simple root-tree format, but that's another gripe...)

Spotted this: in the newspaper yesterday

"Alan Moore, the graphic-novel genius whose next instalment of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is due out in a couple of months – is a notoriously private man. Which makes his appearance as the closing-night act at the north-east's biennial AV Festival even more special. He will perform a monologue inspired by JB Priestley's Depression-era travelogue English Journey, while images by the writer Iain Sinclair will be projected on the wall of the venue"

Takes place at The Sage in Gateshead. 5-14 March: avfestival.co.uk
