General / Dreddcon 4 Update! Free HeroClix!
04 December, 2003, 11:22:44 PM
We are pleased to announce that, courtesy of our friends at Hobbygames (HeroClix UK distributor), everyone who comes to Dreddcon this Saturday will receive a free sample Indy HeroClix figure of Judge Dredd or Johnny Alpha.

There will also be HeroClix demonstration games, so Dreddcon visitors can join in and learn how to play this great game (not to mention get the opportunity to thrash the tar out of other, lesser comics characters).

Also, at 4.30pm, we will be auctioning for charity a set of large (and we mean LARGE) Mega-City One themed graffiti panels that many of you may have seen at the travelling Judge Dredd exhibition that has been touring museums in the UK over the past two years (I've asked Wake to put up a couple of images in the News section).

All money made from the sale will go towards the Galleries of Justice, for their work with young people on a crime prevention programme.

General / DREDDCON 4 UPDATE: Further Guests and Events
26 November, 2003, 06:39:28 PM
Oxford, 25 November 2003.

It has now been confirmed that artists Ian Gibson and Mike Collins, and writer Simon Spurrier will be guests at this year?s Dreddcon, adding to an already impressive lineup of creators.

Ian Gibson is probably best known for his work on Halo Jones, the legendary strip he created with Alan Moore, which is often hailed as one of the best strips to appear in 2000 AD, and indeed British comics in general.  His distinctive art style has also graced many Judge Dredd stories and a number of stunning 2000 AD covers.

Mike Collins is a long-serving comics artist who has worked on a wide variety of comics for a number of publishers in his career. His work for 2000 AD includes a number of Judge Dredd and Rogue Trooper stories, and he has even written a few Future Shocks in his time.

Simon Spurrier is one of 2000 AD?s more recent discoveries, but in his time writing for the magazine, he has already created a number of popular stories, including Lobster Random, From Grace, Bec & Kawl and The Scrap.

In further news, we can also confirm that we will be running PC multiplayer games of Rebellion?s recently released Judge Dredd: Dredd Vs. Death, and there will be the chance to play miniatures-based table-top game HeroClix, featuring a range of popular 2000 AD characters.

Just in case anyone's not already aware of this, thought I'd post up to say that Judge Dredd: Dredd Vs. Death will be out tomorrow on PC/PS2/Xbox from all good retailers, and on GameCube in November.

And here's a link to a review from the Guardian online you may not have seen yet (there's also a good one in the latest issue of Loaded)...

General / Necronauts
10 October, 2003, 12:13:11 AM
Necronauts

Published: Out Now ? Price: ?7.99/$13.95 ? ISBN: 1 904265 09 X ? 64pp, Softcover

?An unsettling, provocative secret history ? playful, gruesome, mind-expanding and weirdly convincing.? ? Kim Newman

?I'd always wanted to do a story featuring the founder of the study of Fortean events cracking open zombies' heads with a cricket bat...? ? Gordon Rennie

2000 AD is pleased to announce the publication of Necronauts, the first of a new range of 2000 AD graphic novels, collecting some of the best ongoing characters and one off series? in the history of 2000 AD, by both legendary creators and upcoming writers and artists.

Necronauts, written by Gordon Rennie (Judge Dredd, Storming Heaven), and drawn by Frazer Irving (Judge Death, The Authority, Fort), tells the tale of what happened when four of history?s most unconventional characters and students of dark matters - Harry Houdini, Arthur Conan Doyle, Charles Fort and H.P. Lovecraft ? discover what lies on the other side of the mirror.

Unfortunately, ?it? also discovers them, and the four occult adventurers soon find themselves beset by unnamable terrors and dread creatures in both the real world and the astral plane, not to mention the added complication that one of the four may not be all he seems. The story builds to a savage climax, where not just the group?s lives, but also the continued existence of the world and indeed reality, are at stake.

Gordon Rennie is one of 2000 AD?s most prolific writers, responsible for well-received series including Caballistics, Inc., Missionary Man, Storming Heaven and Glimmer Rats among many others, as well as being one of the most popular writers of Judge Dredd. He is also a prolific novelist, his work including the novelisation of Rebellion?s forthcoming Judge Dredd: Dredd Vs. Death videogame for Black Flame.

Frazer Irving is one of the UK?s hottest new comics art talents, his distinctive style having graced the pages of popular 2000 AD series? such as A Love Like Blood and Storming Heaven (also written by Gordon Rennie), as well as a definitive Judge Death in two solo series? featuring the Dark Judge. Irving has also started making a name for himself in US comics, with projects such as Fort: Prophet of the Unexplained and The Authority: Scorched Earth under his belt.

Gordon Rennie commented, from his eldritch throne of skulls:

?Years ago, I'd been reading some books about Houdini, and had always been an Arthur Conan Doyle fan - the first thing I ever had published was a weirdo Sherlock Holmes comic about Holmes and Watson teaming up with Henry Jekyll and pursuing Edward Hyde through the works of Edgar Allan Poe - and was interested to find out that the two men were friends and had a shared interest in spiritualism and the occult, even if they approached these subjects from opposite ends of the spectrum; Conan Doyle as the believer and Houdini as the debunking sceptic. The idea of turning them into a team of 1920s pulp fiction occult-busters seemed like a pretty cool one. I still needed more characters, though.

Following the real-life historical connections led me straight to HP Lovecraft as soon as I remembered that Lovecraft ghost-wrote a story for Houdini for the famous horror mag Weird Tales. (It was the story 'Imprisoned With the Pharaohs', pulp fiction fans.) Recruiting nutty old Howard into the gang opened up all sorts of ideas about using his Cthulhu Mythos in the story, but I still needed one more character.

In the end, I never could find any real-life evidence to tie prophet of the unexplained Charles Fort into any of the other characters, but he was around at the same time and he was suitably strange and oddball enough to fit right in with the rest of the Necronauts cast.

Plus, of course, I'd always wanted to do a story featuring the founder of the study of Fortean events cracking open zombies' heads with a cricket bat...?
--

Frazer Irving was briefly released from his padded room to say:

?Necronauts was my first proper assignment as a comic strip artist and it couldn't have been a better choice. Dark, mysterious, creepy and downright disturbing...and that was just the writer. Tentacles! Cthulhu! Houdini! Zombies in 1920's New York and the most dramatic use of a cricket bat in all fiction! Drawing this whilst chained to my table in the cellar, I had to plunge the depths of my nightmares to conjure the horrors within. From the action packed John-Woo-esque battles between Charles Fort and Zombies, to the terrifying unveiling of the great unseen evil in the world, to the tear-jerking heroic tragedies of our heroes... all were penned in a state of madman-like hysteria, helped along with several glasses of finest drinking ink. I am very proud and a little warped by this book, and I implore all brave mortals out there to take this message to the world.?

--

Necronauts is available from all good book and comic shops, or online from the webshop at www.2000adonline.com. Direct trade customers can place orders with Diamond (Ref: JUN032472) or Red Route Distribution, and book trade customers can order via Red Route.

Unfinished versions of Judge Dredd: Dredd Vs. Death sent out for review

Rebellion, developer of the forthcoming Judge Dredd: Dredd Vs. Death for PC, PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube announced today that due to a duplication error at a third party, unfinished beta builds of the game have been sent out for review as ?finished? games to a number of magazines across PC, PlayStation 2 and Xbox formats.

Rebellion are currently investigating how this happened, and trying to track down the rogue builds of the game.

Rebellion CEO and Creative Director Jason Kingsley says, ?We first realised there had been some sort of foul-up when we started hearing feedback from the early round of magazine reviews, which highlighted issues with the game that we knew had been sorted out in later builds of the game. Obviously this is a massive blow to us, as we have been working on Dredd for a number of years and we have a great deal of faith in the game, backed up by the warm responses we have seen and had reports of from people who have played the correct versions. Our aim now is to make sure that all remaining review copies of the game to be sent out will be finished builds that offer an accurate picture of the quality of the game.?

It has also been announced that the release date for Judge Dredd: Dredd Vs. Death on PC, PS2 and Xbox has now been moved back to the early part of October. A specific release date will be announced when it is confirmed. Currently the GameCube release date of 21 November is unaffected.

Visit the official Judge Dredd: Dredd Vs. Death website at www.dreddvsdeath.com

About Rebellion
Oxford-based super-developer Rebellion was started by brothers Jason and Chris Kingsley just over ten years ago. Rebellion has developed such games as the double BAFTA-nominated Aliens Vs. Predator for 20th Century Fox on the PC, which was launched to worldwide acclaim in 1999 and reached the number one slot in games charts throughout the world. Current games in development include Judge Dredd: Dredd Vs Death for Vivendi and IronStorm and Sniper Elite for Wanadoo. In June 2000 Rebellion bought the hugely influential sci-fi comic 2000AD. Rebellion is now working on a number of games featuring 2000AD characters, and has announced plans to make two new Judge Dredd movies. General / Preview stuff
16 January, 2003, 08:39:44 PM
TMO has asked me to point out that there is a lovely bunch of previews of forthcoming stories, including imagery, in the news section. New strips include Snow/Tiger, the Trial of Orlok, The V.C.s, the return of the ABC Warriors, Atavar 2 and Interceptor.

I think he was a trifle concerned that no one had posted any snarky comments about them on here yet... ;)

Oh yeah, there's also a recruitmment ad up there for an ad sales person for 2000 AD and the Megazine.
#9
Well okay, it's really for a piece the Western Mail are doing on sci-fi fans. They basically need a Welsh 2000 AD reader (preferably one still living in the valleys) who's prepared to answer a few questions about why they like Dredd, and have their mugshot appear in the newspaper.

Any volunteers?

Please email me at pr@2000adonline.com if you're interested.

Cheers

Mark.

General / Graphic novels en Espanol
14 October, 2002, 11:51:13 PM
Can anyone tell me what the nearest Spanish equivalents for 'comic-strips' and 'graphic novels' are? i.e. the Spanish equivalent of 'bandes dessinees'(sp?)

I don't entirely trust online translation, cos I'd probably end up with the Spanish for 'amusing striptease' and 'violent works of prose fiction'...

...actually, the second one wouldn't be too bad.

2000 AD artwork signed by Pitchshifter to be auctioned on Ebay
All proceeds to go to Amnesty International

Eagle-eyed 2000 AD readers may have noticed that Pitchshifter, techno-metal heroes and headliners of the recent 2000 AD 25th Anniversary party at Ministry of Sound, also appeared in the special 25th Anniversary comic strip in the magazine.

Now the band have agreed to sign the original artwork page from the comic, and also a copy of the magazine it appeared in (Prog 1280, fact fans), and the whole lot will be auctioned on Ebay (www.ebay.co.uk). All proceeds from the auction will be going to Amnesty International, who were the charity of choice for the 25th Anniversary event, so the final buyer of the art will be helping a good cause as well as getting their hands on a unique piece of memorabilia.

The auction will start on Monday 1 July, and will run for ten days. The signed artwork and magazine will be posted on www.ebay.co.uk, and will be available to Ebay users worldwide (buyer pays postage).

Matt Smith, editor of 2000 AD, says, "With 2000 AD being one of the few British comics to reach its Silver Anniversary, this is a zarjaz chance for Squaxx dek Thargo to grab a piece of genuine comics history. And as the proceeds are going to a worthy cause, I expect to see bids coming in faster than Dune Sharks in a feeding frenzy!"

JS Clayden, lead singer of Pitchshifter, says, "I've read 2000AD all my life. I still read it. To be immortalised in its pages is the biggest and most flattering thrill you could get. Playing their 25th Birthday bash was a great honour and one of those once in a lifetime things I will never forget. When the guys at 2000AD said that they'd like us to sign the original artwork featuring us from the 25th Anniversary edition of the comic, we jumped at it. Amnesty International is a worthwhile organisation and if we can anything to help them and make the world a better place it can only be good.".

Pitchshifter's awesome new album 'PSI' is available now and will rock your world like a bad-tempered ABC Warrior, and 2000 AD is available weekly from all good newsagents and comic shops, or by subscription from www.2000adonline.com.

General / Artist needed
17 April, 2002, 12:08:35 AM
Just had a message from a friend who's looking for an artist to draw a comic strip he is writing.

There's no promise of any money in it at this point, unless he sell it to a publisher, but it may be something one of the budding art droids out there might want to look at doing for portfolio/experience. He's a sound bloke, and writes stuff professionally, so I don't think he'll piss you around.

Anyway, if it's something you may be interested in, drop me a line at markc@rebellion.co.uk, and I'll put you in touch.

Suggestions / Re: t-shirt requests
11 March, 2002, 03:36:40 AM
>MORE TSHIRTS MORE TSHIRTS MORE TSHIRTS

New t-shirts should be on their way fairly shortly. We've been doing fleeces and hats for winter, but we should be bringing out a few new tees for the 6 days or so of t-shirt weather this country will no doubt have this year.

So, here are a few questions to help us work out what you out there in TV-land want:

Which characters/realities would you like t-shirts of?

Would you prefer character t-shirts (i.e. piccies of dredd) or logos'n'slogans (i.e. Citi-Def)?

Would any of you female readers (or more svelte male readers) have any interest in skinny-fit shirts, or shall we just carry on making tent-sized ones?

Do you prefer black t-shirts, or would you like us to bring in some more colours, such as khaki, navy, camo, etc?

The more of you express an opinion, the more chance you have of getting something you might want to wear.

General / 2000 AD fan with own costume wanted
30 January, 2002, 05:42:21 PM
Okay, it's not as dodgy as it sounds (which may disappoint some of you). I'm working on a feature with the Big Issue for the anniversary, and one of the things they want to include is a small write-up on a dedicated 2000 AD fan.

The only proviso is that they need someone who either possesses an outfit based on one of the main characters from 2000 (and is happy to be photographed in it), or has good photos of themselves at Dreddcon/Bristol/wherever in full costume.

As the feature will be going into the South-West and Midlands editions of Big Issue, fans from those areas will be doubly welcome.

Please email me at markc@rebellion.co.uk if you think you can help (and let me know what character you've dressed up as).
