Classifieds / Buffy - DVD - Complete set - £40
30 August, 2009, 03:37:13 PM
Does anyone facny a lovely, velvety set of Buffy? It's one of those imported jobs you see on e-bay, but it works just right, has decent picture quality, and comes in a compact storage box, both attractive and space saving.

£40, plus postage, or I'd trade it for something nice.

You know you want it...

One of my jobs for the day was to advertise a complete Buffy dvd set. Just the one. For £40. One of those imported jobs you see on E-bay. Between Nick and I we have two complete sets. We don't need two. Just the one. So I'm selling one.

And what happens on the day I decide to sell one?

Invasion of the Snecking Spam Bots.

The site is saturated with adverts for DVDs.

Buggeration.

Nevertheless if you want a set of Buffy dvds, the imported complete box set, and you think £40 seems fair contact me. And if you want to trade it me for something else, contact me.

Othewise....bugger.

General / Is it true reading Slaine...
16 August, 2009, 10:05:48 AM
I was reading a scientific journal recently and read a theory that a particular interest in, or long term exposure to comics about barbarians who wear loin clothes is the only connecting factor between Oscar Wilde, the gangster Lattlay Fottfoy, scary man Derren Brown, and Purple People Eater star Neil Patrick Harris. It went on to postulate that regularly reading comics such as Slaine might make you gay.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Any thoughts?

Books & Comics / I don't like Watchmen.
28 July, 2009, 10:44:48 PM
There.

I've said it.

I know it's a great piece of writing. I know it's wonderfully drawn. I appreciate it's structure, it's characters, it's focus.

But I don't like it.

It's churlish, mean-spirited, and just not my cup of tea.

Is there anyone who does like it? And I don't mean like as in 'think it's brilliant' I mean actually enjoy the narrative on it's own terms? For me I'd rather read any random sixties comic. Less well written, less well drawn? More than likely? But more fun? You bet.

Just because I agree with John Byrne doesn't make me a bad person.

Off Topic / These things I like.

What are the things in life that make you smile just by thinking about them

The Snake by Al Wilson. Northern soul perfection, catchy, upbeat, funny. It's the perfect song to get a night going, it's one that's guaranteed to be played about half ten at every party I throw. Just when everybody is merry enough to get up and jive.

Holidays in Llandudno. Faded Victorian glamour crazy AND miniature golf. A choice of Ormes. I just need to step off the train and I feel more relaxed, perfect place to mooch around, simultaneously quiet and busy it's friendly, cosy, and beautiful. Close to Conway and Rhos too.

Single narrow subject museums. i heart museums but I especially like ones with very narrow focusses. As great as the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry is it's too broad a focus. There's something appealingly crazed about the monomaniacal enthusaim of the Keswick Pencil Museum, the Southport Lawnmower Museum or the Northwich Salt Museum.

The Eurovision Song Contest. In a completely un-ironic and serious way. I actually get a bit annoyed when people assume I'm in it for the camp and the sneering. Well okay, I like the camp but I have to admit the last few years of Terry got me a bit cross because you know what? As soon as I hear Te Deum I'm in the zone. Focussed on the competitors. And I don't need somene telling me it's shit. Last year a couple of my closest friends came around, we had a Euro buffet and score sheets...

Kylie Minogue. Ever hear any bad reports of Kylie? You never will. Pop music that is happy to be pop, and trying to do nothing else than to brighten up three minutes of your life, coupled with perfect visuals. The live concerts are stunning, spectacular and not ashamed to throw things like I should be so lucky in to the mix.

When the Boat Comes In. Agit-prop telly from another age. Perfectly cast, angrry drama about the birth and openness to corruption of the Union movement, capped off with a mesmerising performance from the under-rated king of Telly James Bolam.

2000 A.D. Natch.

So, you people, what aer the things in life that make you happy. The more esoteric the better.

Books & Comics / Jonah Hex
20 March, 2009, 10:25:23 PM
Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti have been producing some mighty fine western comics over the last 3 and a half years.

If memory serves the DC Showcase Presents volume was the first of the non cape titles covered and I bought it on a whim, enamoured with the format of the books as much as anything else. (That much comic for so few pennies?) I hurtled through the book and loved it (and as a 2000 A.D. reader was pleasantly surprised by Mike Fleischer). At the back of the book was Frank Quitelys cover to issue 1. Next time I went to the comic shop I picked up issue one.

And I've been reading it ever since. It may not be top of the pile when the monthly comics arrive but it never dissapoints.

What impresses me most is the ever changing tone. Some months it'll be a comedy with the worlds unluckiest bank robber stumbling across a hungover Jonah. Another month it'll be a grisly tale of revenge seeking sisters who wield a cleaver, crippling and hobbling men and keeping them in pens. Then three friends will run away from the circus to become bounty hunters. Next month a serial killer stalks the west...

Mostly self contained tales the few multi-part stories seem epic in comparison, and are rare treats. There are occasional back references linking the stories but even then everything makes sense to the newcomer.

For solid, well written comic bookery I can't think of anything else as consistant and surprising.

So, you know, why aren't you reading it?

Film & TV / Network dvd sale
21 January, 2009, 09:58:59 AM
Those lovely people at www.networkdvd.net have a nifty sale on at the moment. Everything was cheaper from their website anyway but now there's an aditional 40% off.

They specialise in ITV related programmes and amongst their back catalogue are Beasts, Kinvig, Arthur C.Clarke and the kingdom of the crystal skull, Owl Service, and brilliant shows like The adventures of Robin Hood, Special Branch, The XYY man, Upstairs Downstairs, Press Gang, and classic Corrie.

The only danger, at this point, is overspending...

Hoorah. Tongiht, after 19 years, the Brig returns to the telly in the not half bad Sarah Jane Adventures. Quarter past five on the CBBC channel.

Of course this'll be labelled spam but, you know, I thought you might like to know.

Hoorah! You may already know about this site but I didn't. Or I don't think I did. Which is the same thing.

Just to see if Pat Mills ears pricked up I made the story generate a Slaine story. You may choose not to.

//http://www.the-elite.net/---/story/

I liked this part bestest. "Ukko picked up to a very happy Slaine. Ukko calmly assured him that most albino cats sneeze before mating, yet long-haired sea monkeys usually charismatically cringe *after* mating. He had no idea what that meant; he was only concerned with distracting Slaine.  Why was Ukko trying to distract Slaine?  Because he had snuck out from Slaine's with the spear only two days prior.  It was a striking little spear... how could he resist?"

Some things are too great for words. Somethings are greater even than a monkey in a hat. Some things I see and want so much I feel exquisite pain. Such things are thus.

I popped into my local Home & Bargain today for a mooch and spotted the egendary Heroes - Pitt series on the shelves. As the price was under three quid and I'd ended up paying much less for The Outer Limits DVDs than I expected I thought I'd see which ones they had. And wouldn't you know it? They had 5 out of 6. The only one they didn't have in stock was Dredd. However you might get luckier and be able to pick up a Dredd for the less than the price of Gladiatress:The Smack the Pony movie on DVD. Bargain.

News / Deathray (hearts) 2k.
02 June, 2008, 12:44:47 PM
The much delayed 13th issue of UK sci-fi mag is now in shops and continues the run of issues with 2k connections and material.

Previous issues have seen Si Spurrier write about sci-fis troubling love of guns, there have been profiles of Dave Gibbons, and interviews with Gary Erskine about new Dan Dare. Slaine the King has been named Graphic 'Novel of the Month' and there was an interview with Jonathon Oliver a few months ago.

This time Pat Mills gets an interview and it's a huge feature  The only things written in bigger letters on the cover are Battlestar Galactica and DeathRay and they couldn't be more effusive in their praise and fair in their summation. He's the main interview for the month and has interesting things to say about Defoe, Savage, Greyshirt, and his career in general.

Go on. Buy.
