Title: Forum Update
Post by: 500 on 28 July, 2011, 02:40:40 PM
We have just completed a re-skin for the forum, if you see any pages that still use the old theme (or a mix of both in some places :o) please do a forced refresh (ctrl+f5 [windows])

There's way too much wasted space at the top. On my default 'Active Topics' view, there are 588 pixels before any meaningful content. I'll be forever scrolling down to see anything - and that's on my desktop, let alone my laptop screen(!)

Harsh to say it, but we could do without anything above "Home | Help | Search | Profile" etc.. especially the advert!

I don't see a "Home | Help | Search | Profile at all. ?? I think its a case of 'damned if you do', not everyone will be happy with it but its certainly better than the vanilla skin. But yes we could loose the advert, or at least move it to the bottom. Never been a fan of banners on a forum (present company excepted)

I want to avoid jumping stuff around when navigating the site as far as the banner's concerned.

Can you pop me over a screenshot of how you "can't" see those links at the top and what browser you're using to w3bz@2000adonline.com ?

Thanks but I've accidently neglected to mention one or two things:
1) When I click the SHOP link, that too opens up in a new window. Should it (if not, then please fix it)???
2) My PM Box may be broken. It comes up as one long thread (even the new ones) instead of independent threads for different subjects. Is it meant to do that or not???

Yeah apologies about the search bar.  ::)

I am currently working on a full search system that scrapes the site, forum, wiki and shop but the forum part doesn't work properly as of yet and wasn't supposed to be pushed upstream with the latest update.

It has now been rolled back

Title: Re: Forum Update
Post by: Dandontdare on 29 July, 2011, 12:13:41 PM
I can answer one of them - the private messages aren't sorted into threads, it's just a list as you say. You have an inbox and a sent messages box, but you need to remember to tick the box when sending a message for it to get saved in your sent mesages.

1) This is as intended
2) The PM box is the same as its always been, if yours is misbehaving can you send some screenshots along with what browser you are using (inc version etc) to 500@2000adonline.com so I can see the issue

Can I suggest making the images on forum posts responsive, it should eliminate the ugly scrollbars if someone posts an image that is too big?

Could try adding this to the forum css file:

.bbc_img {
max-width: 100%;
height: auto;
}

...wont work in browsers that don't 'get' max-width, but will work OK in most modern browsers. Think there are jquery plugins that do similar, but this wee rule is so easy to try.

Loving the new site design, looks great, good job! :)

I'd imagine you guys know of this already, in which case I applogise.

Just in case:

The Community link to here from the main site (http://www.2000adonline.com) is broken.

I get the following message:

QuoteMoved Permanently

The document has moved here (http://forums.2000adonline.com/).

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

The 'here' link takes you the same address showing the same message. Just in case it's to do with Browser operation not going to Index automatically (which I thought they were supposed to do anyway..) I'm using Google Chrome update 12.0.742.122.

If you add 'index.php' at the end of the URL that will sort it. But you probably know that.

Oh, and I wish the ebook ad at the top of the page wouldn't overlap the title banner, but that's a small purely aesthetic nitpick.

I understand the desire for a common look across the site (to be honest, I frequently forget there are any pages apart from the forums) and I'm not having a go at the work you've done but I'm finding the newest look a bit frustrating. On my netbook (I know, I could use another machine, but it's on the coffee table) at its highest screen resolution I have to page down to see any meaningful content, i.e. posts, forum headers, etc.

Is there supposed to be something in the big empty space above Dredd's head?

There is an ad (usually for Solaris and perhaps Abaddon books), presumably your ad-blocker is snipping it out or it isn't loading properly for you.

Hi, just got a message from Krombasher.

He is having difficulties accessing the forums. I understand that it's mainly accessing unread posts.

He gets a 301 error.

He pasted the following copy of the message he gets:

QuoteThe document has moved here.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

It seems similar to an error I had a couple of days back, but mine just stopped for whatever reasons. I suggested he restart but he has done that twice to no avail.

He is using a PC using Chrome, with btpiloting.

Ok, I will attempt to address the issues raised (please post if I have missed any)

1) 301 error when trying to navigate to the forum
>>> Is this still happening? I was doing some work to fix a canonical url issues on Friday which might have caused a temporary glitch in the servers redirect rules, but shouldn't be happening by now.

2) Clock
>>> Looking into it now, must be a BST issue
>>>>>> The clock has now been sorted

3) Double login
>>> What browser and OS are you using (inc versions etc)? Will try to replicate your issue once I have the required info

4) Images breaking the forums layout
>>> Will pass this onto w3bz whilst I look at the code based issues

5) Popular Thrills images
>>> Again will pass this to w3bz

6) Top of forum
>>> I have plans to enhance the top by making use the of white space to the right of your avatar / profile bits. Thinking a a mini active topics box will be best placed there (list of <> 5 posts)

Out of interest, when you first come to the forum are you going to

The latter is correct and there is a redirect in place for the former, but that might be something that's going wrong for you?

My laptop has a widescreen and it all looks a bit wonky and stuff is pretty scattered on the top. Once past that its all fine just the banner and stuff.

send me a screenshot my man - w3bz@2000adonline.com and what browser you're using
