Books & Comics / Re: New Comic Book Day Megathread

I've been away from the forums for a little while, but I thought I'd pop back in today to mention that I actually have a comic coming out from Image Comics this week. It's called Super Freaks, and it is a one-shot anthology Fanzine for Erik Larsen's Savage Dragon.

During spring of last year I and the co-hosts of my Savage Dragon podcast, the Savage FINcast, together started organizing a fan anthology to celebrate our 10th anniversary as well as the 30TH anniversary of Savage Dragon. Originally we intended to self publish it and give it out as prizes for podcast listeners, but Erik Larsen liked the look of it so much he offered to publish it officially through Image.

I bring this up, because I was reminded of the passing of Dave Evans recently and it reminded me that Super Freaks has its direct inspiration tracing back to Zarjaz and Dogsbreath. I actually came up with the Savage Dragon Fanzine idea way back in the late 2008, and I used the 2000 AD Fanzines as the concept template. I couldn't generate enough interest at the time among the Savage Dragon community, so I created a podcast instead. But now 10 years latter its a reality and I regret now not finding a place in the credits to memorialize Bolt 01 in the text somewhere.

I thought about posting this in the announcement thread about his passing, or the other thread about the Bolt anthology. But I figured here in this thread was more appropriate.

Necrabump, aany chance of getting the rest of this scanned and archived? Because it's really cool!

Just learned of this, a terrible loss. Bolt and I never really interacted directly, but his activity here and his enthusiasm for Futurequake and the fanzines was impossible to miss if you spent any time on this here forum. My condolences.

Also, aren't ReGen Progs double length? So 4 ReGen Progs a year means subscribers are getting the equivalent of 4 extra Progs a year

REALLY big call to make, but I have just made the decision to cancel my 2000AD standing order with my LCS, as of Prog 2212.
It had been building for a while, but the die is now cast.

Three key reasons:

Dredd as a character is done for me. I've lost interest entirely.

In general the stories run this year were, in my opinion, poor. Some weeks I was reading as little as 6 pages out of 30. I would genuinely rather re-read the worst of the "nadir years" ('93 - '96) than the class of 2020.

The "Regened" all ages stuff just ain't for me. The news that they are once again devoting 8% of next years Prog's to it was the straw that broke the camels back.

I will keep an eye out for collections that interest me, but no point habitually buying something I don't enjoy anymore, even if that habit span 38 years.

Counter argument.

1. Dredd's been a hoot and a half this year.
2. This year has been one of the strongest for me in the last couple of years. Great new strips this year especially.
3. Because I don't sub I just skip buying the Regens when they don't interest me. They seem harmless enough, 8% of the year's output is hardly a road bump if it means making 2000 AD a tad more visible.

2020 2000 AD has been a gas, looking forward to what 2021 brings (hopefully more Brink and Full Tilt Boogie)

Sounds like a digital omnibus or two would solve this. Has Sin-Dex been appearing the Ultimate Collections?

now if only we could get a series of full uncut sin dex in digital...

Wait, what's missing from the available collections and the follow up Meg Floppies?

EDIT: Oh wow, I'm dumb, the first 5 collections* aren't even available Digitally

*Gunshark Vacation, Murder 101, Slay-Per-View, Eurocrash, and Money Shots. Everything Downlode Tales and beyond is in digital Floppy form.

Quite interesting that 75% of the stuff on that list was previously in the Extreme Editions.

Obviously digital doesn't mean only digital and it doesn't mean at the expense of other physical volumes. To be honest, it's nice to see then actually promote their digital only collections for once. Word of the previous ones seemed to slip out despite the best efforts of Rebellion!

Having Red Seas and Caballistics Inc. in fat Digital tomes rules

And yes, most of these new digital offerings appear to be EE stuff that has not graduated to full collections. The only significant missing one is Milligan's The Dead.

I really don't think people should be taking Digital-only releases as a sign that these strips will never see print. Lots of material from Meg floppies eventually got full collection treatment in time. Its just a way to get stuff available now.

Some exciting stuff coming next year:

This is going to be digital only

This is so great. So many of these have been stuck on Extreme Editions with no digital option for too long.

Now.. I just need a way to get Lobster Random Book 1 digitally. Some how.

Black Hammer '45 is a fascinating book.  A weird war story of fine caliber. Kindt's a unique artist (and writer), I like 'im.

I like Black Hammer (the main series) but I have never read any of the spin-offs. Are they any good since Comixology has a sale on them? If so, which spin-off is worthwhile getting?

They are all good, but Doctor Star is on a whole other level.

I also like Quantum Age a lot, but that's because I'm a big Legion of Super-Heroes fan

I'm so happy this thread still gets regular use. Sorry for not contributing much to it any more. Despite me reading more comics then ever lately. I wonder if it has the most views of any single thread on the form.  300k+ seems like a lot.
