Do you watch anime? I watch anime. If you like 2000AD you'd probably like anime.  This season is off to a rollicking strong start. Here's a couple of shows I'm really looking forward to.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans looks to wash the bad taste of Reconguista in G out of mecha fan's mouths with a gritty tale of child soldiers on Mars on a besieged escort mission to Earth. The first episode opens strong out the gate with violent imagery that tells you right off that this ain't no kid's Gundam. Solid mecha designs all around, and I kind of like the character designs too, there's something really familiar about them though. Can't put my finger on it. The best part about this series though is that its being streamed everywhere that matters, Crunchyroll, Funimation, Daisuki (I'm pretty sure you can watch it for free on Daisuki), and Hulu. So Sunrise is really doubling down on this series in terms of exposure.

One-Punch Man is based off the manga of the same name, and is possibly my single favorite comic in the world of the moment. It fuses a mix of both East and West style super-heroes together and throw it into a comedy mix all about over the top devastation. The first episodes basically covers the first 3 or 4 chapters of the manga, so its got a brisk pace about it. Oh and its animated by Madhouse, probably the only studio capable of capturing this series's pure action in motion. This series is also streaming on Hulu, Daisuki, and Viz.

Other series I'm somewhat, but less so, interested in; Young Black Jack, Lupin III, and maybe Concrete Revolutio (apparently this one is pretty weird). I'm not sure what licensing restricts might affect you Euro types (apparently the new Lupin III series actually premiered in Italy?!) but anime seems to be more avalible then ever on the various streaming services. Hulu in particular is giving a strong showing this season.

Here's a graphic of all the new shows this season...

I gave up on anime when they stopped making harem, superhero and mecha shows.

The Adventurer

But... That's all they make these day?

FROM THENCE THE HILARITY ARISES.

The Adventurer

Well, like I said there's a new Lupin III series, and that's none of those things. Young Black Jack won't be either.

The new Gundam looks the shiznit! I especially like how one of the mechanics of that show is that the lead Gundam (they're calling it Barbatos) is going to be taking parts from enemy mobile suits and adding them to itself over the course of the show.

It seems like Sunrise have really caught on to the fact that Gundam has a following in the West. With the announced release of most of the franchise in the West over the next few years, it's a good time to be a fan.

Also: shameless plug - if y'ain't following my Brainjar TV Youtube channel for anime stuff, now's a good time. There's some Gundam stuff headed over there next week.

And there was me getting all excited thinking Matt E Smith was getting an animated film...

Professor Bear

Is Matt E Smith any relation to that guy from The Fall?

Colin YNWA

What you mean Mark E Smith... no of course not.... he's errr.... wow wonder how I managed to do that!

I may sound really old here but is anime even on british TV these days? (I remember when Channel 4 used to show it late at night or Sci-Fi would show it on weekend morning).
I know in the US they get the Adult Swim block which shows some but how do people in the UK watch it? Internet streaming/ downloads?

Between them, streaming sites/apps Crunchyroll, Daisuki and Viewster usually end up showing all the new shows from any given season, and they're all free to watch.

Nothing really grabs me this season except the aforementioned Gundam, One Punch Man and possibly Concrete Revolutio.

I'll be filling my anime time catching up with older shows I never got around to watching like DuRaRaRa, Silver Spoon, Tokyo Ghoul, Ushio and Tora and Food Wars, all of which are excellent.

I don't believe so. Which is a damned shame. The argument has always been that, at least in the UK, the viewers aren't there to support it. Kind of galling really, seeing as the industry is very appreciably having a tough time. You'd think having at least some anime on TV would be a good advert for all the DVD box sets and other merchandise.

Toonami is still going in the States, after going away and coming back again. I think they recently reduced the number of hours they air for. I have no idea if that's even accessible in the UK, or how it would be.

I'm not sure if it matters that it's not on TV, and even as an anime fan, I doubt I would bother watching whatever was broadcast as the streaming model is far more user friendly and the selection more diverse than anything a network could manage.

There's even a selection of really great shows on Netflix in the UK now such as Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Gurren Lagann, Stein's Gate, Kill La Kill, Space Dandy, Psycho Pass and Tokyo Ghoul.

Although there's been less anime on Western tv in recent years, there's been a surge in traditionally-animated cartoons made or funded in the West as well.  Networks probably realised they could just make their own anime and own it outright forever rather than licence shows on a year-to-year basis and find themselves in a bidding war if the shows they'd helped promote actually found an audience.

Most anime fans get their fix online anyway.  Streaming would be the official means, but last I checked, filesharing sites were plentiful to the point that a lot of them come with the approval of the content originators in Japan, as they usually create an audience for stuff that would never be licenced in the West and drive up demand for the lucrative merchandise that creates the only profit said shows generate.  Can't recall where I read it, but supposedly something like a third of Kamen Rider merchandise is shipped to the West.
