Title: Graphically 2000 AD! 2000 AD through design and iconography
Post by: Vernoona on 26 June, 2022, 09:11:32 AM
Sorry everyone - it's another blog!

I've just wrapped up the first phase of my THRILLSHOTS blog, which has been looking at the Hachette collections each week. I'm taking a break from that, but turns out I can't stop thinking and writing about this stuff. (https://thrillshots.wordpress.com/ (https://thrillshots.wordpress.com/))

I wanted to look through 2000 AD from a slightly different perspective, and explore it in a specific way I hadn't quite seen it done before.

Graphically 2000 AD will be me reading through 2000 AD from Prog 1, identifying design, logo, icon elements etc. I'll whip them up clearly in Adobe Illustrator (which I'm currently self-teaching myself), and give each element its moment in the sun - including crediting the artist if I can figure it out.

Intro is here for anyone interested in following along (https://graphic2000ad.wordpress.com/2022/06/26/introduction/ (https://graphic2000ad.wordpress.com/2022/06/26/introduction/)), and the first two posts are already up!

Have enjoyed your Thrillshots blog. This looks like an interesting premise so count me in.

Very interesting idea and great first post (and second looking at the Trans Time one). Be interesting to see how big this gets as when you start to think about it there is a LOT of iconography in the thrills.

Count me in.

Thanks Colin! It's entirely possible I've bitten off more than I can chew...

Good idea - shall hope to include links from my prog slog blog as and when they arise (and once I kick-start it again as it's been paused for a while).

Thanks Sheridan! I'm reading along with your blog while going through the progs!

New post up on... a second version of the Trans-Time logo in one episode!

I somehow never realised there was a 'V' beneath the skull on the volg emblem!  I first read an Invasion episode 39 years ago.

I'd place good money that one is Kev O'Neill not Boix, who did do the first episode of course, but I reckon that's a paste up by then art editor (or assistant I forget) Kev - its so his art and would explain the fact its completely different!

I definitely remember saying words to that effect somewhere - but apparently not on my blog, which would have been the obvious place.  Whatever Kev's job title was, they were definitely bodging on 2000AD at that time (hence the appearance of a Tharg face by Kev on the cover of programme 1).  I seem to remember there are some Kev-like skulls making an appearance in another early thrill.

The other story was a background in Brotherhood of Darkness (https://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?topic=42158.msg890846#msg890846).

I doubt I'll keep up this daily posting for much longer, but for now - enjoy! Post #4 brings us a bit of an out-there logo from DAN DARE... https://graphic2000ad.wordpress.com/2022/06/28/4-space-freighter-sirius-logo/ (https://graphic2000ad.wordpress.com/2022/06/28/4-space-freighter-sirius-logo/)

Even before scrolling down to read I can tell that's a Bellardinelli design!

p.s. I'm guessing tomorrow's logo will be the double-D design.
