It doesn't reach that lofty standard, I'm afraid. However, they have included a lovingly shot beach football scene with some spectacularly sculpted abs.

Crisis. It was very much of its time, but I think there's some interesting parallels and it could be very relevant today.

Oof. Much as I've enjoyed Pandora, and we don't get enough humour in the prog these days, its up against a classic here. Cradlegrave

4
The Out. A standout story from recent years.

Top Gun: Maverick. If you're going to do an unnecessary sequel, then this is the way. The new characters work (particularly Jennifer Connelly's) and the action sequences are stunningly filmed. Nostalgic references to the original hit their mark, but it still works for those who aren't familiar with it.

I won't go into the film's glorification of the US military because, if you're going to see a Top Gun film, you shouldn't be surprised.

6
Ace Trucking Co.. The prog doesn't do enough comedy, in my opinion, and, when Ace worked, it was very funny.

7
Nemesis. A defining thrill.

I guess they're supposed to reference a monk's robes, but I agree there should be variation for environment and species for the Jedis.

Wandering around Blade Runner wearing Jedi robes was idiotic on the part of Obi-Wan Ben.

General / International subscriptions
« on: 31 May, 2022, 11:57:48 AM »
I currently have a print subscription to the prog and meg here in Scotland. However, I'll be departing for the frozen wastes of Canada (BC, specifically) later this year. The obvious answer is to switch to a digital subscription, but I do like getting a physical prog. Does anyone have any experience of the service with international subs? Or, even better, with delivery to Canada?

I'm reserving judgement, but enjoyed the first two episodes.

I was slightly surprised to see Flea turn up. I hope they lean into the theme of "great rock bassists" in future episodes. Maybe Peter Hook as a Rebel fighter, Kim Deal as a bounty hunter and Bootsy Collins as a tavern owner?

There's an interview with Karl Urban in The Gruaniad today:

I'll save you a click:

Are you going to be part of the planned Judge Dredd TV show? He perks up a little. “Regardless of whether or not I’m involved with it, I think it’s such a wonderful property. John Wagner and his entire staff of writers and illustrators have created so many wonderful stories that I, personally, as a fan of Dredd, would love to see. I can’t wait to see what they do with it.”

I heard a rumour Disney+ is going to continue the series with the same cast?

Hulk vs Thor: Banner of War Part 1 (Cates, Cóccolo, Mayer, Anderson, Sabino) and Thor #25 (Cates, DeFalco, Shammas, Cóccolo, Frenz, D'Armini, Rich).

I've enjoyed Donny Cates' Thor run to date, so I was optimistic when he took over from Al Ewing on Hulk. Ewing's run started with a bang, but had long run out of momentum by the time it finished. The time was right for a fresh start. Unfortunately, I lasted 3 issues with Cates' Hulk-as-a-spaceship-piloted-by-b=Banner concept. It was a bad idea, and it didn't get any better. Disappointing stuff. Unfortunately, this has now bled over into the Thor run I'd been enjoying with a very, very dull Hulk v Thor fight.

Fortunately, Thor 25 is an anniversary issue which also includes a fun retro DeFalco/Frenz story and a well executed Shammas/D'armini spin on a myth, reminiscent of the current Dark Horse "Norse Mythology" series. Both of which have the unfortunate effect make the main feature look pretty flat in comparison.

I'm now wondering whether to persist with this run.

Back when I lived in Edinburgh, I went to see the band Preston Pfanz & The Seaton Sands a few times, and I always got a chuckle out of their name. It was basically the same guys as Les Bof! (Edinburgh's best French garage band), but with a different singer.

Anyway. Sorry for the digression.

Oh ffs! Will need to check last train times, to Edinbra and then North Berwick... pity we never had our own 2000ad train driver to get me back!

The 124 Bus runs pretty late if you don’t mind going through the Pans late at night 😳

Its full name is: "the Pans, eh".
