Title: Pokemon Go app
Post by: Goaty on 12 July, 2016, 09:59:26 AM
US went mad over this app, and it about to be released in UK soon!

I assumed it was already out as I've heard about nothing else since last Friday.

Turns out you can get it but you need to mess around with your location (http://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/iphone/how-get-pokemon-go-on-iphone-in-uk-ios-3642992/).

Be careful, it's not all fun and games. (https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/jul/10/pokemon-go-armed-robbers-dead-body)

Ask James Stacey about his Charizard.  Oh, and ask him about Pokemon Go too.

I caught my first just now - a Pidgey!

I also scored some pokeballs from a nearby store.

I'm quite impressed by this!  I can see how addictive it's going to be.  Me and the girls are going to have a lot of fun, and hopefully it will promote more outdoorsy type stuff.  A game that encourages you to walk!  Sorted.

I been try this Pokemon Go app, you only go to those areas and catch Pokemons, bring level up, that's it. But it will drain your Mobile Data. If your kids got it, you will get huge monthly bills. Very pointless app.

It drains your battery but doesnt seem to be too data heavy. Its just geolocation data.

It's just become the biggest mobile game ever in the US - 21 million active daily users, more than FB and Twitter - so, however else you might want to describe it, 'pointless'  wouldn't be one of the terms I'd pick.

Not if you have shares in Nintendo, that's for sure.  I only found out what Pokemon Go was yesterday.

Yep know it is biggest popular in US, but that was release last week, so wait and see next few weeks. it can drain battery so easy. and use data much.

But still enjoy Fallout Shelter :D

My 11 year old couldn't be more excited for this, and as a kid with anxieties about going outside, he's actively looking to head out and catch pokemon with me and the missus, as well as giving us a great way to convince him to go to new places that he'd otherwise want to steer clear off.

Pointless is in the eye of the beholder, I suppose!

Ha! My partner was passingly curious about it. I showed her, explained the basic principles, and asked if she was going to instal it.

'Pfft  - nah!' she said 'It looks totally pointless.'

She then proceeded to play her freemium 'build a kingdom' game that she spends hours a week on.

As a seasoned Pokemon fan, I sadly found the game app to lack something the actually Nintendo console games have in spades. I can't say what for the life of me, charm? Story? Universal investment? Whatever it is, I spent 2 hours wandering about St. Peter Port catching half a dozen Rattats and Pidgeys before I got bored, went home and cracked out the 3DS, booting up Omega Ruby for the memories.

Installed. Found a Pokémon in my room. Faced with a swoopy arrow. No idea what the hell to do next. And I review mobile games for a living.

Indeed. On hearing of Pokemon Go it reminded me of the 1984 game Hareraiser which must be one of the the first, if not the first, real-world/virtual-world interaction game where solving the clues would allow you to enter a competition that would reveal the location of a golden hare.

The golden hare had been the prize in a previous buried treasure hunt that involved solving riddles in a children's book, Masquerade.

Had a walk around for a quick look. Quite odd seeing quite a few people doing the same...(!)

Scanner showed two Pokemon in neighbour's houses. What are you supposed to do—ring the bell and ask if you can go in?

I put a lure down at a Pokestop near my house last night, and hung around to catch something.  Two local kids sauntered up, phones out.  'Nah, nowt here but a pIdgey' one said, and they wandered off.  then two men in a car pulled up, and both got their phones out.  After about 5 mins of us just hanging around there I said to them 'Pokémon Go?' and they both laughed.  'Any luck mate?' one asked.  'Nah, just a Pidgey and a rattat.'  I left shortly after.

Also yesterday a couple of teenagers had a laugh as I sauntered up to a lure they had left not far from my work, as they watched me trying to catch a Drowsee.

It's everywhere!!

I walked into work this morn and caught seven pokemeon and picked up two eggs and loads of pokeballs from the pokestops en route.  One egg is in the incubator as we speak.

I'm really enjoying this!

The amusing thing in all this is Nintendo's share rocketing and everyone congratulating them but they had virtually nothing to do with the game other than stamping a seal of approval.

Possibly - although the game itself is based on Ingress, Niantic labs original AR game, which is very similar. To the point that all the Ingress Portals are Pokestops / gyms, which makes it easier for me to find all the ones around Oxford :) Esp. as there's one right outside my house.

I'm still playing this!
Title: Re: Pokemon Go app
Post by: Barrington Boots on 17 December, 2021, 10:24:17 AM
I've been playing almost since launch. It's definitely not as much fun as it was: over-reliance on events, paid content, drip feeding new releases and the general malaise of the later gen Pokemon being a bit rubbish have all watered it down a bit, but it's still fun and still something I log onto at least once a day.

I've actually found it a really useful tool to get me out of the house. Our nearest Pokestop is a good 7 or 8 minutes walk from the house, so by going out to spin one every day in all weathers I've ensured I've at least got a bit of fresh air now in these WFH times.

I just wish they'd unlock the rest of the regionals so we can wrap up the Hoenn and Sinoh dex.

Just been on a walk down to the sorting office for an underpaid postage item (thanks Brickowl) and done a bunch on the way. If you'd like to add me I'm tomwe on there: 5019 8282 4961.

I did the sneaky download as an Australian App Store back in 2016 & played off and on over the years. The adult friends who played back then have moved away but now there's parents of friends of my son and my kids themselves to play with.

Friend request sent! I'm Annoyus on there.

Most of my friends playing have given up as well, although I have a couple of hardcore mates still going. It's become harder to raid here - it used to be that you'd be able to just hang around by a 5 star raid and eventually a bucnh of other people would join in, all trying not to look at each other, but nowdays I rarely see other people playing. Interestingly I've not seen many children playing it: my neices and nephews all had a go at one point but gave up fairly quick.

Friend request sent to Tomwe - Barrington and anybody else who'd like to add me, I'm 8282 2872 3093 - name will be obvious!

I work halfway between two gyms and can get to either of them without leaving my building, so that's how I spend my lunch hours as there's not much else to do!  One of the gyms sees a lot of competition (changes multiple times per hour on a typical day) while the other one can sometimes go overnight.

Four months later and I'm nearly top friend level with the two of you, would be either tomorrow or the following day. Assume it's similar between you two? Shall we try and schedule a time to open the last gifts and put on a lucky egg at the same time to double up the xp?

Beyond that I'm now into the heady world of Wayfarer & the euphoria / desolation that comes with The Community's decisions on proposed waystops. It's a rough world to be sure.

That's a really good plan. I've been a bit slack with gifts the last couple of days as the rocket special research has been giving me loads of uneeded berries which has me near-constantly over my item limit, but I can remedy that.
I'm generally good for any time if we want to try and schedule this..

Post by: Tomwe on 07 April, 2022, 01:24:51 PM
I had another Best Friend to achieve as well as a couple others at key stages, then it was evolve evolve evolve. Lv 40 is getting nearer! That was the top for a while wasn't it?
Today's nomination is a gazebo next to the local pub which will convert it into a gym if it gets accepted.
Title: Re: Pokemon Go app
Post by: Barrington Boots on 07 April, 2022, 01:37:22 PM
Yes, 40 was the old level cap. Be warned, after level 40 the xp requirements are ridiculous!

I'm finding it a bit of a slog at the moment - I've been levelling Noibat for ages, there's nothing new for me to catch and I don't find the Rocket stuff much fun so I'm just making slow progress at everything.
Title: Re: Pokemon Go app

37 here.  Am I reading it correctly that you can nominated locations to be pokestops, or is that converting a stop in to a gym?  Though I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to do either.
Title: Re: Pokemon Go app
Post by: Tomwe on 07 April, 2022, 04:24:28 PM
Yeah you get 40 nominations of Places Of Interest (POI) at level 38 that The Community will review and possibly convert to a WAYSTOP. But whether that appears in PoGo or in other Niantic games depends on its location in relation to existing stops.

Niantic explanation: https://niantic.helpshift.com/hc/en/6-pokemon-go/faq/41-submitting-a-pokestop-nomination/

I use http://pogomap.info with Cell Levels 17 & 14 visible. This is a grid that breaks the map down into cells. Each cell can only have on Pokémon POI, so if there is a phone box with a map right next to it there's no point in nominating one if the other is already in-game. Does that make sense? I know there are whole blog posts breaking it down further but i cans find a decent one right now.

Since turning lv38 I have had 18 approved! Also if there is a lonely pokestop and you can put another one nearby (not too near) you are likely to convert the first into a gym. Again, there are 'rules' for this. But I won't try and type that right now!

The process of nomination, review and then either accepting or rejection can really get to you! But I think I would have gotten bored of it again by now if I didn't have this to work on as well.
