A cracking issue (as they all have been) Enjoyed the heck out of both stories, but the star of the show is Staz Johnson, who's art here fits perfectly. The superb Len O'Grady's colours really make the whole strip sing, too. PJ Holden more than holds his own on Death Squad. Recommended!

Anyone else pick this up? Beautiful reprinting of 1960s era Who strips. Well worth a look for any Who fans, or just fans of beautiful comic art!

Games / PlayStation 5 / Xbox Series X mega-thread!
14 June, 2020, 11:53:43 AM
Now that both consoles have been revealed, it's safe to say the next gen is looking pretty darn cool. For me, it's going to be the PS5 rather than the Xbox. Anyone else looking to pick up a new console? If so which one and what games are you camping at the bit to play?

Wow, that cover was a LOVELY surprise!

Prog / Prog 2162 : The gift of Thrill Power!
14 December, 2019, 06:38:18 PM
And so, the bumper Christmas prog lands with a satisfyingly loud thump on the Stephens household welcome mat. As is customary, I'll not be devouring this in one sitting. Behind the stunning Alex Ronald cover lies a treasure trove of eye melting strips. I've only read Dredd so far, and must say it's a very amusing little seasonal tale from T.C Eglington with lovely art from Karl Richardson

The rest will be taken in slowly over the next couple of weeks, but I've had a peek and it all looks as awesome as expected. Great to see strips with art from Brenden McCarthy and Henry Flint in there.

Have a great Christmas everyone. Enjoy!

Prog / Prog 2137 : Mind how you go...

Absolute belter of a prog! Behind the gorgeous Tula Lotay cover lies a selection of thrills unmatched for some time. My personal highlight being Dredd. Loving Staz' art on this. Thistlebone continues to intrigue, as do Scarlet Tarces and Absalom. The Anderson strip was a pleasent surprise. Really enjoyed it. More so than many of her previous runs.

Prog / Prog 2069 : Warrior's code

No review yet...? Beautiful ABCs cover from the Langley droid. Stripnwise, only read Dredd so far, but a very enjoyable opening episode. Dave Taylor's art is to die for! On a side not, my sub copy turned up quite badly battered n bruised. Anyone else have an issue with their....issue?

Other Reviews / The Last American hardback
17 April, 2017, 03:50:21 PM
My copy of this turned up last week, with my signed bookplate turning up today. Has to be one of my favourite limited run comics ever. The book itself is, as you'd expect, damn gorgeous. McMahons art throughout is just a joy, as is the story.

It's a cliche' to say it, but this book is as relevant today as it was all those years past.

One minor thing. I think the printing is very slightly off, colourwise, but if you'd not seen the original books I doubt you'd notice anything was out of the ordinary.

To summerise, this is a highly recommended volume, particularly if you haven't read it before.  ;)

Books & Comics / Paperbacks and Inkstains
18 March, 2017, 10:36:03 PM
Hi folks, please take a look at the Kickstarter for Paperbacks and Inkstains, an absolutely brilliant project that collects the first six issues of acclaimed smallpress comic Papercuts and Inkstains, from Madius Comics. Here are some of the nice things that have been said about the comic :

- "a fantastic showcase for some of the most exciting talent on the UK scene." Pipedream Comics

- "The high quality of storytelling we've come to expect has been maintained, while the humour that makes this magazine so memorable has never been sacrificed or compromised." Starburst Magazine

- "laugh out loud" Big Comic Page

- "excellent short stories" DownTheTubes

- "I can't help but love it" Garbage File

- "a great anthology comic, with such high production values and professional standards." Pop Culture Bandit

- "The thing that makes them so popular is that their stories are so utterly ridiculous." Curiosity of a Social Misfit

- "Consistently Madius Comics have given me more enjoyment than all the books I've read in the past year from The Big Two." Other Worlds Than These

- "quick witted dialogue and eccentric narratives result in a truly enjoyable read." Snap Pow

-"This is an exuberant, inventive anthology from some great talent. It's energetic, clever and immense fun. Definitely worth the papercuts and absolutely worth the inkstains." Travelling Man

This book was put together by a small group of very talented writers, artists and now, colourists. Yes, it's in colour, too. Please take a look and consider supporting the cause!  ;)

Prog / Prog 1999 : Streets of age!
17 September, 2016, 12:47:32 PM
Solid Progage! Absolutely brilliant cover from Boo Cook, featuring Dredd and eldsters march through mega-city. It's superbly drawn, lovely colours and has that old school WTF? that is bound to make folks look twice,

Inside we have a great Dredd one off tale and the chapter ends of all the rest. Really enjoyed this run of strips, especially Outlier and Anderson, who rather strangel gets a final episode drawn by Ben Willsher instead of Nick Dyer. Shame really. No offense to Willsher, as I'm sure the artist swap was unavoidable, but Dyers done brilliantly on this strip.

So then, roll on next week!  :D

Prog / Prog 1993 : MINDCRIMES!
06 August, 2016, 12:40:11 PM
What, no Prog thread yet? Pretty solid Prog. All thriller, no filler, as they say. My highlights are Dredd, which continues at a cracking pace and ends this weeks episode on quite a cliffhanger. Also standing out for me, a surprise 3riller, drawn brilliantly by Colin Macniel and a nice opening episode for th latest Anderson story, with fantastic art from Nick Dyer, coloured by the far too talented Richard Elson.  ;)

Prog / Prog 1962 : FEEL THE THRILL SURGE!
30 December, 2015, 03:45:25 PM
No one else get a surprise in the post today....? Awesome cover by Clint Langley. Wasn't expecting this one to turn up so early. I've not read the whole bumper Christmas issue yet, so have only read Dredd so far. It's a cracker of a one-off from Michael Carroll and Paul Marshall, with superb colours from Gary Caldwell.

Rest of the prog looks fantastic.  Richard Elson is doing his best stuff ever here on Kingdom! ;)

Creative Common / The Dredd Head drawing thread!
28 May, 2015, 09:06:04 PM
Just a bit of fun. There have been so many different interpretations of old Joe over the years and every Squaxx that likes to draw has sketched a quick Dredd from time to time. It's only natural. He's sort of my "go to" character for sketching when my brain wants to warm up it's art lobe! So, here are a few Dredd heads I've drawn. Now post yours! Weather it be phone doodle or fully rendered masterpiece!

So, "you ready? You look ready."  :D

Prog / Prog 1909 : WHERE EAGLES DARE
22 November, 2014, 10:09:11 AM
Great prog, with series either ending or winding up.

Cover: Another superb illustration from the dynamic droid duo of Robinson and Teague. Can't believe this hasn't been done before. The simple ideas are sometimes the best, as is the case here....

Dredd and Kingdom come to the end of their respective stories with a bang! Loved both of these strips and the endings do not disappoint.

The rest is all fantastic too, with Greysuit being my personal highlight, though Ichabod is a close second. Quite disturbing, but a top read.

Is it one more week until the big one....? Can't wait to clap eyes on Dark Justice! ;)

General / The Judge Dredd Database 1
24 October, 2014, 04:44:14 PM
This may be of interest to some folks here. I was reminded of this earlier today while reading some comments on Facebook below some great Cliff Robinson artwork. Not sure if this is the Dredd 'Style Guide' mentioned there or if this was some sort of free gift given away at some point, but this was sent to me by then Tharg, Bish-Op. It contains designs, colour schemes and facts about the world of Dredd, including the bizarre list of (mostly) obvious DO's AND DON'TS....one of which was don't show Dredd killing anyone. I think that one went out the window pretty quickly..... ;)

Prog / Prog 1892 : BLOCK PARTY!
26 July, 2014, 01:53:21 PM
Cover : Nice, simple Dredd cover from Colin Mcneil, featuring the return of two of my fave supporting characters......tewwific!

Dredd: Top opening episode, featuring the return of the two characters from the cover.....plussssss one other! I'll say no more....

Sin/Dex : I've enjoyed this outing for the famous gunslingers. Certainly more than some of you other folks, by the sound of it. Jake Lynch has really impressed for the duration of the story. Love to see more from him. Perhaps a Dredd? He draws a cracking Dredd!

Aquila: Love this. Both story and art are outstanding and, 'd say one of the best strips of recent years.

Brass Sun: Story wise, my least favourite of the week. The art has improved since last week, but I am really struggling to care about the characters. Not bad. But not fantastic, either.

Black Shuck: Love a bit of sword and sorcery. After last weeks cracking opening episode, things don't slow down this week, either. Yoewell and Blyth make a great team on art, while Moore and Reppion provide an intriguing script.

A nicely rounded prog, this week. Something for everyone!

Cover : Amazing Chris Weston Dredd cover this week. Cover of the year by a country mile.

Dredd: The tale of sensitive Klegg comes to satisfying end. Beautifully drawn by Weston, lovingly coloured by Michael Dowling, this heartfelt, funny story ends in the best way possible. That is, leaving it open for more in the  (hopefully near) future!

Brass Sun : Not my favourite thrill, but I have warmed to it over time. The art, while lovely, is a little too sparse for my taste. An interesting strip, though.

3Riller : Like this a lot, but not sure where it's going. Top artage from the Holden and Denton droids.

Future Shock : A 3riller and a F.S in the same issue.....An OK, but slightly obvious tale. Nice art from Nick Dyer.

Sin/Dex : Part one of a new Sin/Dex tale and we now have new(ish) droid Jake Lynch on art, giving it a fresh feel. Very nice indeed.

Books & Comics / The Wicked + the Devine
22 June, 2014, 09:41:39 AM
Not normally one for picking up monthly books, preferring the trades, and I've also never pre-ordered from my local comic shop. Picked up the first issue of this after seeing some gorgeous previews of the art elsewhere online. It's an absolutely beautiful comic. The story is set up quite nicely in this first issue, too.  I won't spoil it for those waiting to get it, but it involves reincarnating Gods, pop stars and Scanners style exploding heads....so lots to like! Very much looking forward to issue 2.  ;)

Film & TV / Ninja Turtles Movie
31 January, 2014, 11:37:22 PM
I've always been a fan of the Turtles, so was kind of looking forward to this, despite Bays involvement. Must admit, though, this poster has taken away some of that hope. Anyone else looking forward to this / Think it's going to suck?  Personally, I'm still looking forward to it, though more out of curiosity now.  :D

Another image, which looks like an action figure to me...
