Film & TV / Na na na na na na na na BATMAN
24 March, 2011, 12:26:35 AM
Recently got a lend of Batman: The Brave and the Bold off my wee cousin. A lot of camp fun. Especially Aquaman (OUTRAGEOUS). I love the retro design too. There's a lot of wee in jokes for us die hard Bat-fans too. Sometimes it's a wee bit childish, but then again, it is a kids' show.

But the main thing I took from it was that, nowadays, it seems that everyone is trying to make comic book adaptations 'dark and gritty'. That's all well and good, but here's a show about, arguably, the Character that started this trend, portrayed as campy and fun, and it's no less enjoyable. There's something to be said for light-hearted, mad-cap madness.

Which brings me to my next point. Adam West. Why oh why has that classic series never been released? I blame lawyers. I have the movie, and honestly, it's my favourite Batman movie of all time. Don't get me wrong, Nolan and Burton's movies are excellent, but they don't have classic lines like 'Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb'. It's probably the only movie I've ever watched with commentary. The commentary from Adam West and Burt Ward is priceless. Every time Julie Newmar is in shot, Mr. West laciviously purrs 'hellllooooo'. It's almost as funny as the actual dialogue.

Come on lawyers, prove you don't hate all of humanity with one small gesture, hash out a deal so I can watch this show without being at the mercy of TV schedulers' whims. Just give us this one thing. I'm not asking you to be human....just.....baby steps

...the surviving denizens (from modern society) would not have the appropriate interpersonel skills to build a new society.

I shall present the basis of my assumption:http://www.laphroaig.com/qc/qc.htm

This post, all three lines of it, took at least 20 minutes to compose. Damn that's good whickey :|

Film & TV / Boardwalk Empire

Has anyone been watching this? I've only seen the first two episodes, and it's bloody great. Scorcese shoots it gorgeously, it looks like a moving Norman Rockwell painting. The pacing is spot on, and although Steve Buscemi gets head billing, there's a whole ensemble of interesting characters, and so far, there haven't been any weak links in the cast (although Kelly Macdonalds Irish accent slips a wee bit some times)

Off Topic / Frank Zappa

Picture a Venn Diagram: One circle represents 2000AD fans, the other, Frank Zappa fans. Do the two intersect much?

Been collecting Zappa Albums on and off for a few years now and I'm wondering where to go next. So Far I have (in the order I can remember them):

Hot Rats
Weasels Ripped My Flesh (Sugarcane Harris's rendition of Little Richie's 'Directly From My Heart To You', is something else)
Burnt Weeny Sandwich
Freak Out
We're Only In It For The Money
The Grand Wazoo (Cleetus Awreetus- who knew Honky-Tonk piano and wah-wah porn-funk could work so well together?)
Absolutely Free
Joe's Garage
The Mothers Live at the Fillmore
Apostrophe(')
Waka/Jawaka

Any Zappa fans out there have any suggestions?

General / Mastermind

I was watching Mastermind last night, and I was wondering if anyone has ever gone on and had 2000AD/Judge Dredd as their specialist subject? And if not, would there be anyone on this board who would be willing to give it a go?

I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread where people could describe their regional quirks and stereotypes. A resource for creators who want to add a bit of regional flavour to characters they're creating.

For instance, say I wanted to create a character who was from Blackpool, or Swansea, or Darby, or
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. Those places aren't really well represented in the media, and I've never met anyone from these places, so I have no frame of reference for those characters. I'd be interested to learn about people from those places and I'm sure some of you other aspiring writers would too.

Me, I'm from Derry, Northern Ireland, Northwest part of the Island. If ye want yer character dee be a Derry Head, remember dee use 'dee' instead of 'to', and that the only time it's called Londonderry is when Prodestints arguing over what the town is called, or if yer on the telly, the rest of the time everyone calls it Derry. We have a lot of armchair experts and tend to be argumental (emphasis on mental). Most of the Teenagers tend to be either wiggers or goths (although they will insist they are not goths, they're emo/metal/punk what have you. I don't care).

A few other things: there's a tendancy to contract everything we say. Our traditional greeting; 'What's the craic?' is pronounced 'Scrakk' and our traditional farewell 'See you after a while' has been contracted to 'see ye after' which is usually pronounced 'shafter'. If you are trying to emphasize that you will see the person very soon (or in certain cases when you haven't seen said person in a long time and definitely want to get back in contact with them), you would say 'Shaft her hard'

General / The Day the Law Died Radio Drama

I've been listening to this (on tape, took me ages to find me old walkman), and was wondering, who does the voice of Dredd? He sounds an awful lot like Dr. Girlfriend from The Venture Brothers, and it's a bit off putting at times. Otherwise it's great, Cal's characterization is spot-on

I have a 55 hour week coming up in work. It's not as horrific as it sounds, I work in a Hotel Car Park, which mostly just involves sitting in a booth with a bunch of monitors, occasionally giving out change, but mostly reading and watching box-sets.

So I'm just looking for suggestions for things to watch/read.

I've asked my mates, but they keep suggesting stuff I've already read/seen.

But so far I've got the original BBC Radio Series of 'HitchHikers Guide to the Galaxy' :D
I've read the books, but never heard the original radio show in it's entirety.

I also have the BBC Radio play of 'The Day the Law Died'

So anything else ye can suggest :-*

Off Topic / Snooker
21 September, 2010, 12:43:19 AM
The Snooker's back on, and the other day we had the rare pleasure of seeing Jimmy White playing the other day.

So, I was just wondering about Ronnie O'Sullivan. He's an amazing player, but does anyone else thinks he comes across as a moany twat in interviews?

I don't want to start a negative thread, so I'll say I do like Neil Robinson, and young local boy Mark Allen. And this new best of 5 format is a bit Steve 'interesting' Davis

Any other snooker fans want to weigh in?

Welcome to the board / 2000AD Fan living in Belfast
03 September, 2010, 07:16:20 PM
I'm living in Belfast and would just like to know where fellow Belfast inhabitants purchase their progs. Is it just me or does our local forbidden planet not always put the latest prog out in a timely fashion? I'm sick of trouncing into town every day to see it's still not there.

Tharg I impeach thee in thine infinite wisdom to have pity on me, a lowly insignificant Earthlet, and visit your terrible wroth upon those who seek to sabotage and obstruct my quest for thrills.
