Title: 40 Years of Scream! - April 2024 - Collecting EVERY issue???
Post by: Dash Decent on 07 July, 2023, 01:54:39 PM
40 Years of Scream! (https://www.amazon.co.uk/40-Years-Scream-Simon-Furman/dp/1837861072) Hardcover, 464 pages, 25 April 2024

Scream! - 15 issues, five specials. We've already had "Monster" and "The Thirteenth Floor" collected (and, I think, "Library of Death" by Hibernia) - but could this be the whole lot in a massive volume?  It's 464 pages and £75!

Blurb says it collects the 15 issue run.

"Celebrating 40 years since IPC launched the UK's most iconic 'horror' anthology, this single volume collects all of the strips included in the 15-issue run of Scream!

"Produced 'from the depths' of King's Reach Tower by the mysterious 'undead' editor Ghastly McNasty, the first issue of Scream! was unleashed on 24th March 1984. More tongue-in-cheek than horrific, the comic was an immediate hit with younger fans as it included a pair of fake vampire fangs attached to the cover and a number of fantastic new strips from such talents as Alan Moore, John Wagner, Jose Ortiz, Cam Kennedy, Tom Tully, Alan Grant and Eric Bradbury."

On Speedyhen it's currently £28.75 - A friend alerted me to the site about a year ago and I've found it to often be the cheapest option, and I got both of Terry Moore's Strangers In Paradise collections for under £20.

Books Etc often good with pricing/packaging also, but doesn't tend to list offer pricing until something is actually in stock.

It's my birthday the day after this is released. I definitely want this as a birthday present. I remember getting this comic from issue 1 but sadly I don't know what happened to them. Thanks for the Speedy hen link.

I'm guessing at 464 pages it won't include all the story material from the specials.

Checking my original comics, at 32 pages per issue for 15 issues, less approx 35 non-story pages leaves about 444/445 pages. That makes about 20 pages for extra material (and there's usually a useless page at the start and end with some graphic on it, plus title/colophon/indicia page or whatever you call it). Not enough for even a couple of the specials.

Looks like it might be essentially like binding your original issues together. Just nicer. And without ads. Or teeth 'n' spiders.

Maybe a volume 2. There's enough material for one, although a lot of it will be less interesting.

According to the blurb, it's just the 15 issues of the comic run.  No mention of the specials being included.  As you say, an opportunity for a follow up if it proves popular.

I wouldn't worry about it. In those days, stories in specials and annuals were usually not as good as in the regular issues.

If there's a particular story you think is really good, maybe write to Matt Smith and ask him to put it in the Megazine's Treasury Classics section.

It seems a little unfortunate, but also strangely reassuring to discover that even the professionals can't find a copy of issue #1 without sticky tape damage :)
