We've got the butchered songs thread so seems only fair to have one of these!
I'll get the ball rolling with this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dunKAwRN3P8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dunKAwRN3P8)
It's a pretty revered song and quite a dramatic re-tooling so probably won't appeal to all, but in terms of taking a song I've never been all that fussed about and making it something I really like it's probably one of the most successful covers I've heard. MJK's voice has a lot to do with it of course, he is silk to the ears.
Electric Eel Shock do some awesomely silly covers and are playing about the place this month.

That Floyd cover is a thing of beauty!
And in my defence the other cover versions thread wasn't in the Music section so must be about covers of other things, like books and stuff.

Oh wow, that was GOOOOD!!!!
My particular fave is almost not a cover.
It is Gary Moore playing Phil Lynott's/Thin Lizzy's 'Black Rose' at a tribute gig to Lynott.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QJl67JwktA
It's not that much of a cover, seeing as Moore actually recorded Black Rose with Lynott on the original LP, but heigh ho, it's still bloody brilliant. The duelling guitars towards the end always makes my hairs stand up on end.
The clip above is also worth a full watch for the Cowboy Song/Boys are Back in Town cover.
Some great covers mentioned in this and the other thread. I agree that Johnny Cash's Hurt is one of the finest I have ever heard. Special mention also goes to Nirvana's Unplugged covers, especially The Man Who Sold The World.
Anyway, the best cover (which I have eventually worked out based on countless pub discussions) is Joe Cocker's With A Little Help From My Friends. OK, the original was intentionally manufactured to suit Ringo's 'unique' voice so isn't The Beatles finest but still, look what Joe did with it.
Good call on that Gary Moore version, he was a curmudgeonly sod but he'll be missed for sure.

Oh man, this stuff is GOLD!! I loved the hell out of that one mate. You're right though - it's only when the lyrics cut in you realise 'oh yeah, this is a cover'.

I'll need to give all these links a proper watch later on. Cash did some great covers, seem to remember his version of Soundgarden's 'Rusty Cage' being really good too.
Never been a fan of Black Sabbath (I know, it's not cool to say that, I've just never really been keen on Ozzy's voice) but I have always loved War Pigs mainly thanks to Faith No More's cover being on a VHS tape I had as a kid - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhIMf61NeB8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhIMf61NeB8)
In fact, they've been responsible for a lot of cracking covers over the years. I was at one of their gigs a couple years back where twice during the show they broke off mid-song to play a lovely rendition of the Eastenders theme (found a video of it here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xAU-9flSCQ#t=148 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xAU-9flSCQ#t=148)).
The first time was funny but the fact they did it twice during pretty heavy songs was just genius, totally broke me.
Bizarrely enough Keef, I dug out my copy of Faith No More's greatest hits yesterday, still sound as fresh as the day I first heard 'em. I remember seeing 'em at the NEC in '92 when L7 came on first, playing Enter Sandman and singing the Pistol's "Bodies" over the top - worked brilliantly! Halfway through FNM's show, they stopped and playing a sterling cover of The Commodore's "Easy". My, how we laughed. Next thing you know it's their biggest hit. And we knew it was all done as a pisstake.
Anyway, I'm going for Warren Zevon (and 3/4 of REM) doing "Raspberry Beret". Rockin.

I like this a lot, Far's cover of Pony by Genuwine. It's an utterly ludicrous song originally, but Matranga's voice and the meaty riff they've given it brings a smile to my face every time. It was a hidden track on an album and I gather was done as a joke, but it rocks all the same.

Anyone like Zappa?
I like 'Dirty Love' from 'Overnite Sensation': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5IZobXdJyE
However, Dweezil Zappa has taken his Dad's stuff and gone touring with it. In some cases he alters the tunes very subtly.
With 'Dirty Love' he replaces the male lead vocal with a female lead vocal, which not only changes the subtext of the lyrics, but also comes across as a much better piece of music, bizarrely!
Here's an incredible live rendition to illustrate what I mean!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DF4XxcZZv-I
Soft Cell's Tainted Love is so definitive many think it the original. I really like Marilyn Manson's cover, which twists it into something darker.
Korn's cover of the Wall is might fine, but doesn't stray far from the Floyd.
Placebo (a band I don't like) vastly improved Running Up That Hill, to the extent it's the second most played track in my music collection according to Itunes.

Can anyone confirm or refute my theory that the nineties rash of acts performing bluegrass or Cajun cover of rock tunes stemmed from that bit in Back To The Future part III where the 1885 version of ZZ Top play a banjos and violin arrangement (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zrZTbok8E8) of the film's notional theme tune, Double Back (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9zw_79tlgM) *, at a hoe down?
* don't worry, no-one else remembers that song was BTTF3's theme tune either, or even that it had a theme tune
While that may (or may not) be one of the earliest examples, I think the proclivity towards bluegrass covers in recent years stems from Hayseed Dixie

3. Always on my Mind by Pet Shop Boys

46&2 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYKLvYGqaC0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYKLvYGqaC0)
46&2 is impressive because it's a really complex track and they nail it* and Sober is even more impressive I reckon, because they've taken a lot of liberties with the arrangement and made it their own. That's one I can see me actually listening to a great deal to be honest.
*well, they skip the part in the breakdown where the guitar and bass add/drop beats independently to slip out of sync for a few bars at a time, and it takes a few of them to do the percussion that Carey pulls off just on pads, but it's still bloody impressive.

I bloody loved that song when it was released - just listened again and it's still great. And that Battledragon's cover isn't bad either once it kicks in.
The Sisters of Mercy have a fine track record for making odd cover versions, as I've noted upthread. Reversing that, here's an amazing cover of This Corrosion (https://youtu.be/uWdvXBa_o5s).
Wow! That seriously works. In fact I'd be hard pressed on which is the better version. The Sisters with their hard core original or this subtle and nuanced take on it. As an anthem for post industrial America (or even Britain) it seriously works. Thanks for that.
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross just released a surprise cover of John Carpenter's Halloween theme (just that sentence got me quite excited). It's not a dramatic reworking or anything (although it does start to get a bit NIN briefly towards the end) but it's covered in that atmospheric ambience that Reznor and Ross do so well, so it's cracking.
