Off Topic / Well knock me down with a feather
31 July, 2016, 03:19:55 AM
I was aware a few years ago that Larry Wachowski had reassigned as a female but I just found out today out of the blue that Andy is now Lilly Wachowski! Had no idea.

Another interesting fact I found out earlier in the week is that Bob Mortimer (of Vic And Bob fame) is not dead as I initially thought but in fact does a weekly (ish) podcast with some fat northern bloke! For anyone interested, Athletico Mince is the most non football podcast about football going. Had me laughing on the bus every morning.

Anyone else learn anything interesting this week?

A Hot Wheels Mystery Machine. And that's only because whenever someone brought their small children in it would always seem to disappear....spooky!

Games / Fallout Shelter

Well, Fallout Shelter is now out on PC. And all new and improved too! You can get it from Bethesdas website (or just google Fallout Shelter PC)

If you don't own a tablet or never bothered getting it then, you should give it a try. It's free. And there are no ads! There is a very slight pay to play aspect but you don't need it at all.

Anyone else play this and if so what do you think? Me, I think it's great. Will tide me over until I can afford to upgrade my PC to play Fallout 4 (or until I get a PS4.5 - whichever comes first)

Music / When you can't help yourself

Is there a song that you can't help but sing when you hear it?

I'm on a bit of a Maiden trip right now (or should that be voyage?) and I've just noticed that Hallowed Be Thy Name does this thing where when I hear it my mouth sings the words!

It happened in a friends car too. The song came on and I ended up singing it (quite loud too) driving through the town in her convertible.

Anyone else got a song like this or am I just a bit strange?

Confession time. Even though I enjoy Mr Gaimans other works, I have never wanted to read American Gods. I read the back cover and looked at the size of the thing, and couldn't justify putting in the hours for something that didn't sound interesting to me at all.

Hopefully this will make me realize that I've been missing out and then I can pick it up. Or I'm going to hate it and die without ever reading the thing. Time will tell.

Central Intelligence

Going in I wasn't expecting much. I'm not a Kevin Hart fan and The Rock is....well lets just say I've only really seen him in the Fast And Furious films....'nuff said on that then.

Anyway, the film. I found myself laughing out loud several times. In fact I was even in tears at one point. So many reference jokes. A lot of which seemed to go over the audiences heads going off the reactions. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and while the plot is fairly predictable there are a few unexpected turns it takes, plus the addition of a cast member who was not shown in any trailers that brought a smile to my face
Yeah Bitch!
If you are going to the cinema for the sake of going out and nothing tickles your fancy, give this a whirl. Also it's a good one to take the wife/girlfriend to. The Rock minus clothes always gets a reaction from the female audience

7/10

Iron Maiden : Futureal

Blaze Bailey -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpN5Xzngwv8

OR

Bruce Dickinson -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGbS7HOKGKE

For me Blaze pulls this particular number off better. But I might just be saying that because he did it first....hmmm....what does everyone else think?

I can not recommend this channel enough. I spent the whole day watching his previous videos. Hilarious stuff.

What a blast! Dangerous? Probably. Illegal? Most likely. Fun? Oh yes!

(I put a disclaimer on my YouTube video but I must add, do NOT use one of these in your back garden unless you live in the country. It will go through fences/windows/peoples skulls with ease)

I saw Terminator at a mates house when I was at primary school. Gave me nightmares for ages. I'm still scared of robots from future.

The Complete Alien Omnibus - Alan Dean Foster

So the only reason I picked this up is because I want to see Alien 3 is based on the screenplay involving monks on a wooden satellite. I'm not holding out too much hope but you never know. And for $3 at the thrift shop it's worth the risk.

Brazil

Terry Gilliams surreal film about bureaucracy gone mad. Brilliant performances from it's enormous cast of stars. I don't like the overuse of the word 'Kafkaesque' but I think it is a pretty good way to sum up the film. Oh and the line "care for a little necrophilia" always makes me smile. That and how much the world feels like its getting ever closer to becoming the one shown in the film. I know Gilliam is one of those love it or hate it directors but if any young 'uns haven't seen this already, I can't recommend it enough.

Story and setting wise it reminds me of A Scanner Darkly. A bleak dystopian future where drug use is rampant in society. And oh what fantastic drugs they are! So glad I picked it up.

Books & Comics / Re: X-Men suggestions

Thanks for the replies everyone. After looking into your suggestions I'm going to start her off with Astonishing X-Men. I didn't actually read too much about story or characters. I just saw that Warren Ellis wrote a few issues and I don't think his work has ever disappointed me before. And since I'll be reading them after her... sold.
