Help! / Name that artist
04 October, 2016, 01:15:19 PM
Hello chaps.

Just received a copy of the 1987 Eagle annual which contains a 13th Floor strip. I can't quite figure out who the artist is though - pretty certain it isn't Ortiz. Any ideas?

The Leopard From Lime Street is a shoe-in for the Free Comics Book Day prog.

Stevie wouldn't blink an eyelid if we saw new material in the Sci Fi Special either.

There might be a 'No big cats' clause in the new FCBD submission guidelines.

So where does this leave Hibernia Press? If they won't be able to republish any more of this old stuff, Rebellion could do a lot worse than subcontract some of the work to them, as they've always done a fantastic job with the repro and editing .

David at Hibernia Press was one of the first people that I contacted after the deal was signed. We have a great relationship with him (he has just recently written an excellent feature that will be included in the 2nd Dan Dare book) and I'm sure that we will be collaborating further in the future.

Gutted if Leopard from Lime Street not in this deal, likewise Billy's boots - which originated in Scorcher in the 70's prior to merger with Tiger. But generally this is fantastic news :)

Don't be gutted about the Leopard - he is ours!!!!!!

What about Metalzoic? DC copyright, presumably?

Good catch - one of my favourite stories and I complete forgot it!  Pat Mills blogged about it last year - looks like some sort of joint copyright between DC and Rebellion.

The joint venture Mills describes was Rebellion licensing the strip from DC and printing it up as a book, I think. In the same way they're licensing Monster and Misty from IPC.

I don't think Rebellion own Metalzoic at all. Every 2000ad episode ran with a disclaimer saying DC owned all trademarks and copyright, and that it was used with permission. They just serialized it, like the Megazine did with Preacher.

It is a DC property.

Unfortunately.

Just to be clear - I don't write these entries. maybe I should...

I'm narrowing it down... I know it's not you and it's not Molch-R.  I think it's that Matt bloke.  I keep telling him, there's TWO f's in "Smiff"!  Work experience people, eh?

Based on the description and page count looks like Every Empire Falls will contain the earlier Joyce stories which set up the current epic. Good stuff.
Perhaps more interestingly the Capes and Cowls trade is a foray by Rebellion into the Mega Collection's territory with a thematically linked volume rather than a story arc or specific artist.
Given the Mega Collection won't run forever I hope this is a sign of things to come as it makes for a satisfying read that works quite differently from the Case Files.

The Cape and Cowl trade is for the US market where themed compilation Dredd books seem to go down quite well.

It's a great title.  (And much better than something like "MCexit".)

At the opposite end of the spectrum, you should check out both the blurbs on Amazon UK as they need tidying up.  "Every Empire Falls" is missing apostrophes ("Big Meg s", "Goblin King s", "Mega-City One s") and at least one full stop ("...in prison or on a slab Have the odds...").  The last paragraph needs rearranging, at the very least.  The blurb ends with a set of quote marks that don't belong to anything else (greatest lawman?"). While I'm sticking the boot (knife) in, "...teamed up with Judge Dredd in one of the most fondly remembered Dredd stories." sounds weak, too.  (Being a pedant, I'd also hyphenate "fondly remembered" but I won't push the point.)

"Capes and Cowls" has punctuation on the wrong side of spaces ("Big Meg ." and "he "is "the Law!").  (I assume that should be a capitalised "He", and a full stop has been lost after "JUDGE DREDD"?)  This blurb also concludes with a closing set of double quotation marks (spandex!") with no matching opening set.

Er, let me just add that the above is meant helpfully.

Yes , already noted. Just to be clear - I don't write these entries. maybe I should...

Judge Dredd: The Cape and Cowl Crimes is set for release in April 2017 per listings on US Amazon.

Sounds like it must be the collected Batman crossovers.

Maybe? But they just got their own collection a few years ago...

I'm thinking it'll be Bat Mugger, Fairly Hyperman, maybe Cycle of Violence/Marauder, the Eric Powell Dredd from the Free Comic Book Day prog. For Bisley... did any of the Heavy Metal Dredds feature some kind of superhero pastiche?

Correct.

Its in Extreme Edition 6 and 9 (M.A.C.H. 1) that is which makes the price of 25 quid just as bonkers since you can still get them in the 2000ad Shop for 2.99 each!

But sadly incomplete. A nice phone book along with the MACH Zero stories would be nice.

And Extreme #6 disappeared yesterday. Can't muck about in these sales.

Hmmm...I sense some happiness for you in 2017.

Hmm, not sure about that Ro-Busters cover. The colouring's a bit full-on and the image doesn't make any sense unless you've read the relevant story (to say nothing of being a big ol' spoiler.)

Really interested to know if the page count's accurate. The remaining strip stuff, plus every remaining Starlord/2K cover, and including the 3-page 'inside story' from prog 144, just for something else to bump the numbers up with - still only comes to 143 pages...!

With a strip that's 30 plus years old, spoilers don't factor in so much.

The book contains additional annual stories and a large cover/pin up gallery taking it up to 192 pages.
