Messages - Rogue Judge

I cant vote! Haven't read Day of Chaos...been waiting for Case Files for most stories, but that might be 8 or so CF away and I'm not sure I can wait that long. I've been excited to read this epic for a while.

I do like Oz but will hold my judgment for now...

America.

Read by itself, collected with the other two America sequels, or as part of the larger Democracy story line, America is brilliant.

I was confused...I began to count...happy
April Fools
Colin!

The Judge Child.

I'm actually re-reading though it right now in Case Files 4, and am having a blast. It's episodic nature with crazy plots and characters is just so much fun. And the Angel Gang is great, with Mean Machine as one of my favorite reoccurring Dredd villains. Also, amazing art throughout!

The Dead Man

While the Day the Law Died is good silly fun (Judge Fish!), and I really like Judge Cal as the villain, its the Dead Man for me. Awesome atmospheric artwork, mystery, and leads into Necropolis, another one of my favorites.

I can summarize them for you if you don't mind spoilers:

Tour of Duty: Dredd let's muties into the city but that's not popular so a cadre of anti-mutie Judges takes over the department and relegates Joe to duties in the Cursed Earth in the mutant work farms. Meanwhile, the mayor is PJ Maybe in disguise. His robot lover tries to assassinate people. Dredd saves everyone.

Mandroid: part-man, part droid gets in trouble, then is stopped.

Thanks Funt! Now that I am informed...Dredd taking the moral high road, mutants in MC1, PJ Maybe(!) and robot lovers? Sign me up, hopefully I get to read this sooner than  later.

Sadly I've read neither of these epics so will not vote. Once these are collected in the Case Files and/or Essential collections I'll consume them and have an opinion.

(If epics are not in the Case Files or last 4 years of the Prog, I've likely not read them)

Origins. The Cursed Earth is fun, but all over the place.

Ditto - this summarizes my thoughts exactly. The Cursed Earth is a ton of fun and chalk full of amazing ideas (stories taking place in the Cursed Earth are some of my favorite), but it is disjointed compared to a solid epic like Origins.

Necropolis

Necropolis is a dark, exciting epic, one I always look forward to re-reading.

Apocalypse War

Every newbie: "Where should I start reading Dredd?"
Every Squaxx: "Case Files #5"

When getting into Dredd several years ago, the above basically summarizes my search. Start with the Apocalypse War was the answer. While not necessarily my recommendation (I say start with CF #1 and don't miss a volume!) I do get why that is reccomend. The story is awesome and the art incredible; this epic planted the seeds of my obsession with Ezquerra's art.

I'm not the man to ask as I have a set of the old Kitchen Sink comics and have never even really considered replacing them. DC's The Spirit Archieve are meant to be very nice, but they are expensive now.

I guess as good a place as any would be the recent The Spirit 80th Anniversary Celebration  from Clover Press (who have recentlyish got the license) and from a quick look through in my nerd shop had a nice mix of strips.

Thanks Colin! The Spirit 80th has been added to my want list. I'll work my way to it, just a few Rebellion purchases to make before then. Cheers

I've not read Eisner's Spirit before either, is there a specific collection you'd recommend?

1. Necropolis
2. Oz
3. The Judge Child

I owe the Cursed Earth a lot, as case files #2 was my first Dredd and thats what really got me hooked into 2000ad. I thought that had to be the best Dredd epic ever, and then I read Judge Child...then City of the Damned...then Necropolis! It just kept getting better!

Some days I feel like reading something a little more serious (Necropolis or the Pit) and some days something that's just good fun (Cursed Earth) - hard to decide which is best from day to day.

1. City of the Damned
2. Mechanismo
3. The Small House

In all other votres I've been putting Mechanismo ahead of CotD. However, through the sharing of color spreads and convincing arguments of CotD supporters, my vote has been swayed! CotD deserves a high standing, I'm convinced.

Congrats Jimbo! Well deserved win. And thanks again to Jim for setting up this fun competition. Although not necessarily the same order, these winners were also in my top three!
