Title: Millar's KaPow Comic Con London - April 9th n 10th
Post by: Colin YNWA on 29 November, 2010, 11:38:18 AM
Well one thing you have to give Mark Millar is he's really trying to push the profile of comics in the UK. His latest venture, which has been talked about for a while now is KaPow Comic Con London. Seems like its trying to hark back to the old UKCAC days and add a bit of the San Deigo movie schpazz to the whole affair.

I'm defo asking for a weekend pass from my lovely wife to attend this one.

Not a massive fan of Mr. Miller, but with that kind of a line up, it sounds fantastic.

It's just a bus ride from my house and Steve Yeowell will be appearing. I have no excuses for not going to this.

That does sound good and i am tempted but i would like the option of being able to show up on the day and pay to go in then rather than having to buy in advance for fear of it selling out and then there is all that VIP Bollox as well which i dont like and i could do without as you should have access to all the panels* with a regular ticket.

25 quid for a weekend ticket is very reasonable.

*I just read it is Marvel panels and since i am not that interested in Marvel its not a problem

I won't be there. Kapow has a list of 100 guests (all of whom have already been selected), and, apparently, that's it. (Unless you buy a table from them) so I would expect a lot of the usual suspects from 2000AD won't be there either.

Have a good one though!

That's a damn shame PJ. The whole VIP/guestlist side of things seems to have been very poorly thought out (from what I can glean from Twitter  ;)).

Title: Re: Millar's KaPow Comic Con London - April 9th n 10th
Post by: pauljholden on 30 November, 2010, 12:18:05 AM
No idea, I believe table prices are relatively high and you only get one guest pass with a table, so it's a more expensive deal for small press. Audience may be expecting nothing but fill colour superhero comics - rather than b&w small press.

What a surprise... Millar not supporting the small press...

San Diego in the UK - hm. See y'all at the next proper convention where I'll be trying to peddle my insignificant homemade comics :O
Title: Re: Millar's KaPow Comic Con London - April 9th n 10th
Post by: pauljholden on 30 November, 2010, 12:44:10 AM
Well, you could make the argument that the UK comic industry has shrunk to the point where it's ALL small press (bar one or two minor exceptions) and the Millar's intent is to target a massive mainstream audience (who expect all comic book related things to be labelled KAPOW!) many of those people will (who had never really been in to comics), may end up being unfulfilled by the mainstream material and seek out the wider range of work available in the small press. In a nutshell : you need a big mainstream audience in order to have a small wider audience.

You could also make the argument that the small press audience/creators are well served by a bunch of comic cons around the UK - but where oh where will superhero fans be able to fill up on material?

(I fully expect to be covering these arguments in detail/hazy vagueness during the next sunnyside comics podcast - so tune in next time!)

Being a kneejerk kind of person I'd already booked before I saw this name - Kevin O'Neill.

Wow. Anyone who wants to see a grown man reduced to a gibbering wreck should queue up with me when I meet Kevin for the first time.

It says in the info on Bleeding Cool that the location has a  full capacity, 5000, with stalls and booths, around 3000. This has me wondering what the full ticket allocation will be and if people don't get in fast will they miss out.

Don't leave it too late  ;)

Plus I'm sure I can get the whole con experience by just watching my twitter as everyone sends "Im just bought @wossy 's comic! Ive not read it but its great! Please RT @wossy!" updates every ten fucking seconds.

Kind of agree with you here. The whole VIP thing is the opposite of what we try to do with HiEx, but then- they'se guys aren't doing a HiEx style show...
But I was more amazed by the claim that there are no other British comic events!

The VIP thing sounds a bit wanky, but I imagine the obsessive fanboys can be very annoying haranging you about the number of links in Dredd's chain while you're trying to get pissed on free bevie, or indeed when you're drawing giant c~~ks in the tabletop slops

Honestly - in many comic cons the seperation is rarely pros/non-pros it's more people with people skills/people without people skills.

Many 'pros' are obsessive fanboys...

Off topic, I know, but that's a great phrase! Like Paul Weller wrote a song about a con....

Anyhoo, opinion divided here: do we:

a) pay up, go to Kapow, walk around feeling slightly baffled;

b) not pay up, go to Islington, hang out in the pub and wait for Forum Folk to join us;

c) organise competing small press event in friendly local hostelry for same days, thus providing home for all boarders and access to Millar's market for small press folks (steal his socks from under him - bwa ha ha ha).....

I welcome Mark Millar but I'm still committed to Bristol and Bham for the love those organisers put in.

Weird that people are thrilled to be meeting Steve Yeowell and Kev O'Neil when they ahve both appeared at Bristol and Brum respectively.

Millar has definitely attracted huge names back like Brian Bolland - I guess like an American Con it may be a very different experience.

SO PLEASE SUPPORT BRISTOL AND BRUM AS WELL

Ya, that's a bit of a shame, so, no small press then?

Seems there will be a Smallzone booth that is going to sell small press titles, with some conditions:

QuoteDear Smallzoners

It has come to my attention that some small press and indy publishers feel that they have been priced out of this new event in London.

Well I'm going to book a special Smallzone Booth alongside teh Scar Comics Booth

For £20 per title facing I will sell your comics or graphic novels and pass on 100% of your takings.

The only condition is that your book is good, (obvioulsy) that you bring the stock to the con and take unsolds back with you, and that you pay the fee before 20th December.

Once I've raised enough to cover the cost I'll book it.(If there's not enough interest I'll simply return any money paid).

There will be limited space on the booth and it will be first come first served. To make best use of the space titles will be rotated to ensure everyone get's prime exposure too.
To find out more email me or you can ask questions on thr thread I've posted about this on the Smallzone Forum.

all the best

If everyone chipped who reads the small press like futurequake etc then they could afford a table.Just a thought but i dont know the costs involved but its something to consider.I am not an avid reader of small press comics but i would happily contribute some cash to their cause.

Don't tempt me. Really, don't tempt me.... There's quite a few pubs in Islington that wouldn't charge for hire, but would expect you to spend a minimum at the bar. Not sure we could guarantee that, eh?

I can pretty much guarantee I'll be in the pub for a great deal of the weekend anyway but the chance to get a sketch from Mick McMahon, Steve Dillon and Kev O'neill, plus the other greats, is too tempting.

Hadn't noticed the lack of small press when I ordered the pass. That's a bit shit isn't it?

Doing Bristol and Brum as well next year as well, it's just nice to get away for a weekend and talk pissed up comicy shit to other like minded weirdoes to be honest.

I will be booking/reserving a hotel room quite soon as there is a Jurys Inn down the road close to the Sadlers Wells theatre.

Anyone i have previously met want to share a twin room ?

This would cost approx 70 quid.

I dont want o t bother anyone i know for a place to stay since the weekend wont revolve around seeing friends who live in London.

Also if anyone is interested i will be eating at Porchettas down the road which is a very good cheap Italian if anyone else likes eating Italian.

Well despite the hyperbole it is actually quite a small venue when compared to the other big comics convention (especially with one aiming for a mix of media like this). So the guest list will be small, table prices higher and the number of tickets with each table are going to be limited.

The upside is that it should be less sprawling and more focused.

GET IN!

DREDD will be at the con.

Just copied this from Down the tubes

Andrew Macdonald, producer of international blockbuster hits such as Trainspotting, 28 Days Later and Last King of Scotland will be talking about the upcoming Dredd, based on Judge Dredd from the 2000AD comics.

"It's fantastic to be involved with Kapow!," says Andrew, "and I'm really looking forward to talking to all the fans about our upcoming Dredd movie.

"I'll be on the 2000AD panel with a little taster of what people can look forward to from our 2012 release".

Really looking forward to this event... as has already been copy and pasted here, I am looking at organising a smallzone booth for those who can't afford a whole table.

(Surely more effective than a 'pubcon' guys?)

It's a one off deal for the weekend so open to all publishers not just smallzoners.

Full details are on the dedicated facebook page at:

Surely the two could work together. The limited space of a table in the Con itself used to market the access to more beer fuelled goodies in a nearby pub?

Well I'm ashamed of myself. I knew that the press release today wouldn't live up to the hype but even to see that exposed as fact I got sucked in and have just checked. To be honest nothing to excite me here. Though to be honest my hopes are that the telly and film stuff mean that the queues for the comic stuff are greatly reduced!

Anyway some stuff at Kapow.

My heart does sink a little more with each of Millar's proclamations and I feel somewhat forlorn at purchasing my ticket with such haste. The VIP idea and no Small Press are glaring examples of narrowmindedness, not to mention the lack of female comic creators.

Then I think, Mick McMahon, Steve Dillon, Kev O'Neill, Brian Bolland, Jock, Brendan McCarthy, Pat Mills, Tharg, Steve Yeowell, Frank Quitely, Duncan Fegredo, Liam Sharp, Chris Weston, Al Ewing, Andy Diggle, Dredd Film, Commando Force's reaction to Dredd Film and BEER! And I feel better.

Is the Small Press Pub Con still happening?

After a nightmare trying to get the Commission King and myself booked into a hotel, it seems as if everywhere is bloody well booked!
I used one hotel finder to book a place very close to the event but before I confirmed, I gave the actual hotel a ring and they said they had no rooms available, even though the site said that they had two twins available  ::)

Anyway after a few mental hours searching earlier, I've booked us both into a dive in the red light district of Kings Cross. So that's our evenings entertainment sorted  ;)

Ha ha - oh the joys of finding cheap accommodation in London!

The last time I visited, I decided to go for a hostel rather than hotel, and I think it's definitely the way to go if all you want is cheap bed - it was loud and full of foreign students and backpackers, but only cost £20 inc breakfast. The time before that I paid a lot more for a shitty room over a rough pub in West Ham.

The best cheap, but quirky and classy hotel, I've ever found in London, was the Edward Lear Hotel (W1H 7JB), but it's currently shut down for refurbishment, so it may not be such a super bargain when it reopens.

Possibly me. I'm a bit low on cash at the moment, but I've a birthday between now and then and I usually get a cheque (hoping that won't be leaving things too late). I'll likely just go for one day though, partly as it's less money to spend, and partly as I've never been to a comic con (or any con) type event, and I'm not sure how it'll be! If it's mainly queuing up for creators to draw/sign stuff I'm not sure that'll be my thing. (Not that I'd mind a sketch, I'm just terribly shy about that kind of thing. Hanging out with boarders while this is going on will help though.)

Event stuff (Q&A, films, project display stuff, etc), on the other hand, yes please. And of course the usual comic perusal. If I enjoy it, I'll suspect the one day will still be enough for me.

I plan to go the day they show the Dredd film stuff. When I find out when that is, anyway.

I'll be going.

Already got my VIP ticket (still need to book the train and the hotel).

I figure - I've spent the last four years studying Screenwriting at university, I'm making the effort this year to submit more (got a bunch of Space Oddities on the go for CLiNT) and I've been talking to the editor of the new Flux magazine.

This is the year I'm really making the push to break into writing, it makes sense to pay a little extra as a potential investment for my future.

The main reason I'm going to Kapow is the Talent Search, which should be really cool.

Still, it does beg the question - should I go to the 2000AD panel or the Marvel one about breaking into comics?

Damn, this is a tough decision.

Bugger well that's the first one I'm gonna miss that I'd have liked to have been at. 10am Saturday morning

QuoteKevin O'Neill and Pat Mills  celebrate the return of Marshal Law  which will be reprinted  by DC Comics.  They talk about the super  hero hunter and what makes him   unique in an endless  jungle of leotard-clad "heroes".    They also talk about their other collaborations such as Metalzoic  (DC Comics),  ABC Warriors and, of course, the fondly remembered  alien freedom fighter - Nemesis.

Hope they don't pile all the stuff I'd love to get to at the beginning! Ho hum So it goes.

Anyway a few more panels have been listed.

This show looks amazing (Jonathan Ross appearing is awesome!) but I'm worried about the tv guests that are appearing - IF it is to be like San Diego are most if not all just doing panel/talks? Will they be signing at all and meeting fans?

I really am looking forward to some Dexter announcements that would be a UK first it seems!

Simon Furman is a cool addition, I met him at a small show down in Essex randomly last year he seemed such a humble guy - though what he was doing signing in a shopping centre in Essex with the Predator and Johnny Bravo I'm not quite sure!

All depends on where people are staying and what's a handy location. The area around the Business Design Centre has a huge choice of pubs, bars and restaurants. It's also on the Northern Line so handy for a tube to central London if needed. You're not far from Kings Cross or Euston there either so there are plenty of options.

After some investigating, we can book an area at the Slug and Lettuce on Upper Street (about 30 seconds walk from the Business Design Centre). No charge for the space as long as about 20 of us show up.... Which I don't think will be a problem....

Am happy to organise along with some appropriate "activities" (drinking, swearing, fawning over droids etc).

Damn.

Looks like tickets have sold out. The venue is about 20mins drive from me on an open road. Every now and then I work in a company about 10mins walk from the venue.

Guess I'll just get there for drinks in the evening at the Slug & Lettuce then.

I have now gone and bought a ticket for the Saturday.I'm going down on a Friday to stay over and be early at the doors. After much umming and aahing about the cost , I have decided to treat myself for my 40th which is on the 12th.So finally will be able to meet other boarders assuming I recognise them.
Like others have asked , will there be signings or is it just q + a's ?

Thanks for pointing that out, Uncle. Didn't seem clear to me on the Kapow website. I done gone and booked myself in for Saturday so I'm chuffed with that.

(Just read Dark Judgement by the way – damn fine job by all concerned – I might even bring it for you to sign.)

Mark Gatiss and the fantastic Pete Milligan seem to have been added to the guest list (at least I hadn't noticed them before).

Also I'm personally very happy to see that Cinebooks have a table. They weren't sure whether they were coming but if they have the kinda offers on that people have suggested that they might I'll be spending a fair amount there!

Very close. One stop on Tube to Angel station then short walk. Might be easier and cheaper to jump on a bus. Go to http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk and chuck in the postcodes for route.

There's been mention of this on the KaPow thread, but just a little plug of its own:

Saturday 9th April, from 4pm

At the Slug and Lettuce, Upper Street, Islington*

<ahem>

The perfect end to a comics day

Come along to the Slug and Lettuce to drink beer and talk shite with some of the forum's finest.

Artistic talent on display includes:

KevLev
Uncle Fester
El Chivo
Dunk!
Kerrin
Supersurfer
and the mighty Pete Wells

(Disclaimer: all of the above have said they're coming for drinks; if you buy them a pint, they may well do you a sketch)

Further guests to be announced (read: kidnapped from the big show)...

* From KaPow, exit the Business Design Centre and turn left onto Upper Street, walk about 50 yards, cross the road. The pub is on the corner looking over Islington Green.

These events where there are only x amount of spaces - does that mean if you don't manage to get into an event , the artists will be on hand later to sign and sketch? Or are they only going to be in an event and that's it?
Also is it ok to bring a book for the artists to sign , I was thinking of bringing my copy of TPO and a couple of Marshal Laws for the Marshal Law room , or it is considered bad form? Excuse the questions but although I've been to a couple of cons , I've never had anything signed.

Hi fella

Firstly having a book already by the artist / writer is always good form unless the event is to sell a certain product like a forbidden planet signing.

Creators rarely sign at talks but will direct you afterwards to a signing in the lobby or at table X.

So turn up with your books and frankly pat mills is lovely and would sign for you anywhere including the bar. So bring all your books and relax - you will get them signed mostly likely straight after the talk.

Creators are usually lovely slightly drunk people - I've never had abad experience in 16 years...

That's what I wanted to hear  :)
I just didn't want to carry books around Laaaandon for no reason.

So there's always a chance to get a signing even if I don't get in the talk?

Here are two official quotes from the facebook discussion board that may help some people!

Quotewe have designated signing sessions, the timetable for these will be released on the website in the next few weeks. You will not need to buy tickets for these, they will be on a queue basis.

Artists will be doing sketches in Artist's Alley, it is entirely up to each artist if they charge for these. Artist's may also have time to do a quick sketch at their signings table depending on the queue.

Quotethere is a limit of five items per signing to minimise queue time and keep these moving, and also give everyone a chance to get something signed.

PLUS

QuoteOne lucky attendee will find a pair of Green Lantern Premiere tickets in their goodie bag! Will it be you?!

That's a real shame about the Dredd panel - I was hoping the interminable wait for something of substance to show up would soon be over - that first pic of Urban in costume was released back in November - nearly five months ago!

Perhaps they're holding back until they have a full poster/trailer/logo to reveal, or maybe they've signed an exclusive deal with one of the big movie mags like Empire and so decided against showing anything yet?

I just wish somebody would tell the fans what on earth is going on. It wouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility these days to post something somewhere or even a tweet, just out of courtesy!

If there's nothing at all from the Dredd film there, I will be slightly miffed to say the least. I mean, I never expected a trailer, some photo's for definate and a few snippets about the process, etc... Especially as this is the 'so called' San Diego experience in London and the movie gods go out of their way to promote their good there. I wonder if that's where it's going to happen with DREDD!

We now have a PR droid and I would have thought he would have mentioned something. I do believe that Dredd has something to do with 2000AD, doesn't he!

Anyway I shall have a good time of it but if I meet Millar then words will be said, if there is a no-show >:D

One more for the event diary.

I will be similarly aggrieved if there is absolutely nothing about the movie. Apart from a good piss up with boarders and meeting all the legendary droids who'll be there, that was one of it's more noticeable selling points when I bought my ticket.

We now have a PR droid and I would have thought he would have mentioned something. I do believe that Dredd has something to do with 2000AD, doesn't he!

Molch-R is away having his circuits adjusted after the brutal indoctrination-blitz he has received. I think Robo-Keef is filling in for him and he might be able to give you more information, but it is possible it is largely out of their hands and has a lot to do with prodctiony-wuctiony type stuff (let me know if I'm blinding you with my advanced film knowledge there), so it is the film PR folks doing most of the running on this. Can't hurt to ask though.

There is a surprise panel but that wouldn't match with the initial press release that said footage would be shown at the 2000AD Q&A (and people are expecting X-Men: First Class there) but perhaps they bumped it up?

This is a bit of a blow, he is not only on quite a few panels but as one of Marvel's top talent scouts, he was going to be reviewing portfolios at the Cartoon Museum:

QuoteSad news, London... I won't be at the Cartoon Musuem or Kapow this weekend after all. First time I've ever had to cancel an event. So sorry!

That's pretty shameful -- I know people who've put in a lot of time and spent real money prepping portfolios for review. At this late stage, I would have thought it was incumbent on Marvel to send someone.

Bah.

Far be it from me to defend Marvel but to be fair they still might? Either that or Steve Wacker might well step in?

That is another blow but allow me to quote the sentence:

QuoteMike Mcmahon has also dropped out due to 'scheduling' difficulties. But Duncan Jones of Source Code is now attending on the Saturday.

Someone needs to find Duncan Jones and introduce him to Tharg (if he hasn't already done so himself) - getting another 2000AD movie out of this might be compensation for no Mike McMahon (especially for me as I'm not going ;) ).

And not one of them could be arsed to step up and do the decent thing by filling in on the portfolio review? Again: I know how much some people had invested in that, and I think this is a piss-poor way of handling it.

Apparently Stephen Wacker will be around and do art only portfolio reviews (some people had prepared comics portfolios so the writer could show off their chops too). Depending on time and everything, I assume he'll be pretty busy.

The set-up for portfolio reviews is still as described on the Kapow Comic Con website.  As of yesterday, they were still accepting advanced registrations for art portfolio reviews.  If you just turn up with your portfolio without registering you could be disappointed.

Whoops another one that might get people angry (maybe). The surprise panel on Saturday is according to Mark Millar on twitter apparently (not checked myself) Noel Clarke... who's been listed as going for a while now. Not really a big surprise then? I wonder if this is another last minute thing?

Also was the Green Lantern panel on the listing over at the Kapow Website? If so that ones gone again.

Not sure if I'll make both days - work has unloaded a ton of stuff that needs doing, but I want to see

a) either Dredd stuff
b) the reaction to there not being any Dredd stuff

Will it be the gigantic one who was at Memorabilia a few weekends back?

Though he was brought down to size by a little girl who burst into tears when she was loomed over and asked if she was a lawbreaker.

Never seen a Judge be more apologetic even though the accompanying dad thought it was hilarious.

I've made a brief sortie to the pub to make sure I haven't forgotten how to drink bee-er. Bag packed, tickets printed, tube map checked, ready to rock. Plan for tomorrow mostly consists of get there in time for 2000AD board, drink. That's as far as I got.

slug and lettuce - any time after 4 - look for.... um... look for people who look a bit like you... (ground floor, somewhere near a window, pile of comics in front of us).

a prize for anyone who slaps the Millar (not a euphemism), or captures photographic evidence of physical contact with a 2000AD legend. i wish you luck on your quest!

Fabulous. Oh what a DVD extra that would have made.

Back.

Uploading photos as we speak, will post a link later.

Missed out on the panel, due to me forgetting my camera and having to travel across London to fetch it... Althought the knowledge that there wouldn't be any Dredd footage or stills didn't make it quite so annoying.

Most of the day was spent shadowing CF in costume, and met up with quite a few creators - everyone was great and finished the day in the pub.

Pretty busy, and I think with more organisation it could be really something.

best quote of the day on a massive queue for Mark Millar "There were that many people who wanted to give him a slap?"

I had a good, if hot, day.

Dredd badges sold out (apart from two display copies, and one that's now reserved)

Zarjaz sold out (15 copies)
FutureQuake down to 1 copy left out of 5.
Lot'a of photos of people wearing the helmet.

Shame I couldn't make any of the talks or see many creators (though Brendan said hi, which was cool).

Tomorrow I'll have 5 helmets to sell, but not much else, since noone seems tempted by the Blake's 7 badges.

Cheers,

Wake

Had a great day bringing The Law to quite a few criminals, both inside and outside of Kapow.
I gave most of these perps a choice, hit with the day stick, shot by the Lawgiver or punched in the face and they all enjoyed their chosen punishment.
One lad asked if I could stand on his back and shoot him in the head, I was only too happy to oblige!
Roll on tomorrow when I do it all again.

I must apologise for being a bit frazzled and perhaps not my usual witty self (although I had a couple of choice bon mots for Pete Wells) and for my early exit upon realising that a small cereal bar at eight in the morning did not make a sound basis for an evening's drinking!

Onwards to Bristol!

Just want to say MANY thanks to Pete and John , who met me in the Jurys , for holding my hand on the Sat morning and getting me in the queue ( near the front , thanks to Johns friend , who for shame I can't remember his name ). I genuinely would have chickened out otherwise.
My only gripe was I realllly wanted Steve Dillon to sign and sketch but missed him  :(
To be honest I only got Pat Mills , Clint Langley ,David Baillie and Shaky Kane to sign as the queues were horrendous.
The best part for me was taking a picture of Harley Quinn who I stalked for ages to get a shot - she was gorgeous , as were the four girls dressed as DC characters.
On another plus side , I just recieved an email saying I won the blu-ray compo that I entered while I was there. Hopefully I'll now win the GIANT T-600 terminator next!

Great day , thanks to John and Pete , and next up is Bristol in May!

That was great fun. A pleasure as always to meet all the boarders, creators and 2000AD staff who were there. The 2000AD panel was interesting and Jock let slip he'd seen the first five minutes of the new film and it was "Fucking great!". Tharg showed us some images from upcoming stuff which I know some people got sneaky pics of, Absalom looks class.

I was completely slack on the photo taking front, didn't get round to acquiring any sketches, apart from one belter from Uncle Fester and only ended up buying two GNs. Ah well, good fun nonetheless.

Here's a few phone photos I managed to get.

You dare laugh at my judicial crotch?!  CF gets into character.

I honestly haven't got a clue. I couldn't have told you who the majority of the cosplay characters were but fair play to 'em. Especially Geek Hulk.

Here's the sketch Uncle Fester did for me in the pub. I had no idea he was doing it and to say I'm impressed doesn't quite cover it. It's amazing to see some one else go with an idea of yours and knock it out of the park. I now have added impetus to get off my lazy arse and write a five pager.

Who is that character with Deadpool in Kerrins picture by the way? I've named my other three but she eludes me...

Always a tricky one, they could be mistake for someone doing a Black Widow (not a sexual position), but the eye furthest from us, and largely obscured, is the clue - it is Domino:

I'm sorry , I still don't know how to reduce my pictures for inclusion here but this is the next best thing.

Yes indeed it was the first one and yes it looks like Domino - well done!

Kapow was really great.

Bought a copy of FutureQuake, bought a lot of other comics, attended a lot of panels (ducked out of Movie X when it turned out to be 'Super' and went to the Spiderman panel instead) and just had a great time.

Headed home to Edinburgh tomorrow, just trying to work out what to do with the rest of my day.

Back home in sunny Derbyshire now. What a fantastic weekend(that includes Grease on Friday night!). Many many thanks to Commando Forces,Pete Wells and Strontium71 for letting me tag along, I suppose saving em a space right at the front of the Q meant they probably didn't have a choice he heh he.
As for Kapow I thought overall it was ok. The 2000ad panel was excellent, especially when Jock said do you want me to talk about the film and everyone said yes. Having a 20 min chat with Brian Bolland was pretty awesome, I was a little starstruck to say the least, got some great sketches at Kapow from David Baillie, Shakey Kane(unfinshed) and a stonking pic of Joe PIneapples from Clinton Langley.
The pub con was brill. The fact I have never met any of the boarders before made their friendship and company more amazing. Many thanks to Uncle Fester, Supersurfer, El Chivo and Kev for the excellent sketches in my £3 2000ad Sketch Book, thanks again guys. Was great to meet Lady Festina, Kerrin, The Minty Boys, Colin(sorry I went before you came back dude) , Wake, and anyone else I have forgotten. Was great to chat with likeminded people as no one understands phrases like drok, I am the law, Dredd, etc etc etc up here in darkest Derbyshire, as my Mrs said to me last night " your like a kid in a sweet shop". I must give Linda (the Mrs) a special mention as she was expecting to meet lots of geeks and dweebs, not the "NORMAL" lot who was in the pub!!!!! I will be emailing CF the team photo she took last night within the hour hopefully so it will be up on here soon.
Thanks again to all the boarders who made me feel very welcome, hope to meet up again very very soon.

And Shaky reaaally didn't want to do my Dredd ha ha - he said he was a bit out of touch bless him.

Well back home after KaPow and it was a mixed bag.

The good: was meeting so many fine folk from the board.

The bad: not really having enough time to speak to everyone as was also catching up with some friends I'd not seen for an age and being old and grumpy the pub was too loud to do both comfortably

The good: so much to do Saturday I didn't get even close to doing it all

The bad: not enough to do Sunday so much so I popped off for a good chunk of the afternoon for a speedy visit to some of my favourite bits of the British Museum

The good: Some great stalls and bargains to be had (particularly fond of the deal at Cinebooks)

The bad: not enough back issue bins so my want list is barely dented

The good: Meeting Chief and seeing the brilliant binds he gets done

The bad: this new found expense to my wife!

A mixed bag all in all but well worth it.

For the dads out there I would say that Bristol / Bham = day out at Blackpool, and & kapow = Disneyland.

It was faster, relentless, much better tied in to other media but just on a whole new scale. You had to wait longer but you got to see much bigger names but ultimately spend less time with them.

I sat in the millarworld panel full 750 seats and standing, 2000ad had  a 500 seated less than a third full. So first of all miller has turned is into a movement. He has spotted the tv link I hadn't MASSIVE queues for Skins and Merlin (who would have thought).

deep down I'm still rather fond of blackpool, it's familiar, safe and still pulls in the crowds but this was a whole new level and I hope it continues next year as it has the best chance of getting comics to a new audience. You had to choose what to do and stick with it or risk seeing nothing. but the overall experience was quite overwhelming. I do now consider millar to have the influence in the 10s that 2000ad had in the 80s. He has a real zeitgeist of cynical, optioned in advance but well structured comics...

Judging by the size of the crowds , I think it's a given that it was popular enough to hopefully come back next year. The brilliant weather didn't hurt either.

Saturday was a lot of fun. Always good to meet up with more people from this forum and it was a lot of fun in the pub. The event itself was ok. Apart from the 2000AD panel there was nothing much else that i was really interested in seeing. Did get a copy of The Red Seas signed by both Ian Edginton and Steve Yeowell though, along with some nice sketches including one by Chris Weston.

The 2000ad panel discussion is being picked up by some of the mainstream media:

QuoteJock has discussed the upcoming Judge Dredd movie at Kapow! Comic Con.

Speaking at the 2000 AD Mega-Stars panel, the artist said that he had seen some footage recently and that it was "very promising".

"It looks great," he said. "It's tough, it's hard, it's violent. I was worried that I would have to come here and say, 'Yeah, it's okay.' "

My stalking of Steve Yeowell took place after the signing, so no need for a disguise. Although I'm not sure it really was stalking. I mean, I only followed him down the street for about 50 yards or so.

No problem about the ticket. I had a nice day in front of the tv and then went to the pub in the afternoon.

As soon as we entered the convention hall we made a beeline to the 2000AD stand and had numerous chats with the lads there and the same at Wake's stand. These became my focal points for the weekend.

Talking to the 2000AD lads, it seems as if they did some excellent business, which can only bode well for the future. Yes I did talk merchandise and as said before what is coming is bloody exciting (I've just pm'd them to see if I can reveal one thing, that I have not even hint'd at because I have only just remembered it now. So lets hope they say yes or they do an official announcement)

On the merchandise front Wake sold quite a large part of his stock and if you look at his facebook page he has hundreds of people wearing one of the helmets. There are a couple of Judge Giants and a couple of Dirty Franks, which are

As soon as I could start to queue up for the 2000AD talk I did and as one would expect, I was at the front. Dedication has to be shown at all times. As said by many already, this was informative but also very funny. Seeing as Wake asked if I could record the panel on his digital voice recorder and as I was sat at the front, I did. The panel was supposed to be 60 mins but overran by 10, great stuff. Obviously DREDD was mentioned, future stories and memories from each creator.

Here's my take on the lovely weekend.

Friday & Saturday

Like the git big posh git I am, I flew into London which was ace. Veeery pretty at night. I met CF at about 10 and we diddled off to our shit tip of a hotel.

We went to meet Ian at his (much nicer) hotel and drank until nearly 3am. After falling asleep mid-sentence when talking to CF I awoke at 6am with a stinking hangover and bursting bladder. I crept to the lavvy and when I'd finished was ready to crawl back into bed for a couple of hours but no such luck - there was CF all wide eyed with the telly blasting - oooh, my poor head...

As we were queuing for the con, we saw Jonathan Ross. He was locked out of the place and was frantically trying to get in to get ready for his quiz thingy. We were all laughing so he treated us to a cheery "Fack off!"

Once in, I listened to CF griping to poor Keith (the 2000AD merch dude) for ages though he did give us some very exciting nuggets of info. I queued for the 2000AD talk with Alec Whorley (a lovely, very passionate (about comics!) guy who was brimming with enthusiasm,) Ben Willsher (a lovely, very passionate (about men's arses!) guy,) Kerrin, Colin and a few others from the board. The lure of CF's amazing commission from KevLev made me gravitate to the front of the queue and I walzed in like Lady Muck to the panel.

The panel was fascinating (even though I was fighting the urge to sleep) and Jock got us all very excited about the film. The calibre of artist at the panel showed the immense love for the comic. It really would be lovely if Dave Gibbons would do us a cheap cover or two to more publicly show his love...

Speaking of love for 2000AD, I was really struck by how many of the (non-2000AD) artists had pictures of Dredd on their tables...

After getting a great Mean Machine sketch from David Ballie and gushing to Clint Langley for a bit, I slinked back to the shit tip for an afternoon nap.

Next came the Slug and Lettuce which was an utter triumph (thanks to Lady F.) Idiotic confession time - I was only Saturday night when I realised that Uncle Fester and Lady Festina were a couple - duh! However, I managed to cop off with both of 'em so it doesn't really matter.

I did a rather touching life drawing for Lady F (Kerrin did her an AMAZING portrait!) and I had a wonderful time giving Kev Levelle and Uncle Fester some invaluable art tips, which I know gave both plenty to think about. I was thrilled when cheeky Mr Campbell flirted with me for the rest of the evening with that silver tongued patter of his. Later on we were joined by Alec W and Keith the Merch. Oooooh, saw the Judge Minty footage which is simply stunning.

Me, Mr & Mrs F and Silversurfer were the last four standing in the pub and I got well and truly lost trying to find my hotel.

Sunday

Had a lovely chats with Chris Weston, Kev Crossley (AMAZING portfolio) and the lovely Alec W and then came the highlight - CF vs. Mark Millar! CF absolutely towered over Millar and it was fun seeing the colour drain from his face as John admonished him. Ever the softie though, I just shook his hand and told him I'd had a lovely time, thanks very much! Next we bought our Dredd prints from Liam Sharp who very kindly showed us two excellent forthcoming covers which are ACE!

After a bit more hobnobbing it was time to go, but I was thrilled that Ben Willsher came to find me to do a sketch he'd promised - how nice is that!?! He also showed us the Dredd strip he's working on (it's a Wagner) in which he's put a cameo that'll make one boarder very happy!

Sorry this went on a bit, not bad for a weekend in which I was pissed half the time!

That hotel really was a dive though. If you're looking for a cheap place to stay in London, avoid the Swinton Hotel. It's a shithole.

I think the guy with his back to the camera sitting next to mr Gibbons is Steve Penfold - the guy who did the art on Fallen Heros. I think I recognise the guy in glasses too, it'll come to me. Where's Jim when you need him.

So a good time had, I am enjoying very much reading the adventures of Pete Wells and John Burdis - :-)

Pete warned me about his snoring and I must admit it was pretty amazing.
On Friday night when we went to bed he started. At first it was like a motorbike just ticking over, then the revs started to kick until and he ended with numerous backfires...
When those happened I just laughed my head off and then fell asleep. So long as I know a noise is gonna come I can sleep through it easy enough!

The next afternoon he actually fell asleep in the hotel as I was talking to him and then the snores kicked in

Oh yeah. Not fussed at all that someone used it, just thought there would be some better photos about. I'm certain I saw some proper press photographers taking shots of the record attempt in progress.

Jim was an absolute stalwart and was there long after all those flighty artists had departed. Letterers, they're a hardy breed.

I must add a massive thanks for Steven and Steve for allowing me to do this and I now know the kick all the cos players must get.

One of my favourite bits of being Dredd was when I walked up to this lady and her son, who was about 4. He was looking away and as he turned round I was towering over him.
I bent down and pointed my finger at him and said "Have you been a good boy for your mum"
He said "yes"
I repied with "Good, always be good to your mum and you will have nothing to fear from the Judges". I then shook his hand and walked off. I heard his mam saying "Do you know who that was, it was Judge Dredd!"

Now that just gives me a happy tingle when I think about how happy they both were just for seeing Dredd!

Thanks again to the Minty crew.

MILLAR TIME!

Okay, I promised if I saw him I would confront him about DREDD! On the Sunday me and Pete walked past him and I sort of did a double take and asked Pete to verify that it was him. Once he did I moved in.

I said who I was and that I was a big Dredd fan and also about my cellar and then added I'm not plugging anything and from then on the conversation went along these lines.

CF I, along with many other fans came here just to see some snippets from the Dredd movie, even just photo's would have been enough. It said on your 'official' website that there was something going to happen in the 2000AD panel. This made many people buy tickets and travel from all over the country, just for this. About a week ago that one sentence vanished from your site without any explanation. Now that as far as I am concerned is not on, we as the fans should have been told what was going on!
MM Sorry about that, we get up to 20% of people pulling out before an event!
CF I understand that but you could have at least have shown the fans a bit of common decency and put the reason up as soon as you knew what was up, or at least one of your minions.
MM I can put it up now if you like!
CF It's a bit late now. So, why was there a no show?
.
.
.
.
.
.
MM The film company pulled it!
CF #@**##@##

After that he did tell me that many movie bigwigs came on the Saturday and loved it and there are already 4 films linked with next year. Yes folks there will be a next year. I asked him would it be the same location and he said yes. (No Swinton for me I'm gonna be in that Hilton next door once tha dates are up)

After some other words I asked for a pic and pushed my fist towards his face as Pete took the pic!

So that's it folks the film company think Fuck all about the fans who have been the supporters of Dredd for the last 34 years. I don't give a shit if the US is the movie capital of the world, as it pissing well ain't, that place is India, so get over it Hollywood.

Best stop now as I'm getting wound up just thinking of what happened  :-X

Good on yer John. At least he had the decency so appear a bit embarrassed. I (and many other 2000AD fans) had several conversations over the weekend about how DNA/Lionsgate had managed to make a right balls of the PR for the movie so far. Instead of combating any negativity from the dodgy spy shots we've seen with official images (how difficult would a low angle, 3/4 front, lowlight shot of the Lawmaster be?), they've jumped in with their size tens and created lower expectations than were ever necessary. Jock reckoned the footage of the Lawmaster he'd seen was ace, just give us a teaser shot of it. Or a heavily shadowed Dredd or Anderson, anything really rather than treating the fans like an inconvenience.

I'll be in the Hilton too. Easy access for con and pubs.

DNA want to do the right thing, but are overruled by the backers/marketeers.

You'd hope that's the case Steve. You'd hope, that a smallish British film company wouldn't treat an icon of British popular culture in such an insensitive manner. Hollywood money suits on the other hand, well, we know they're a bunch of wankers.

Anyhoo, the con was great and I'd recommend it if you didn't make it this year.

To be fair to him- he's right. The few weeks running up to a convention are a fucking nightmare, because that's when guests suddenly realise they can't come and stuff falls through and you cannot replace it at that kind of short notice.

Whatver happened to discussing films AFTER they are released? As far as I'm concerned the company have no obligation to spoonfeed the fans with teasers, pre-release photos or anything.

Whether or not it makes wise business sense in this internet age is another matter, but i don't think fans have a right to DEMAND it.

Yeah... I used to help organize one of the larger Goth events in the UK and the logistics are pretty much the same for all these sort of things -- there's a trio of elements to deal with: exhibitors/stall holders; the venue; and the guests. Between the potential for each of these to fuck up, it's a minor miracle any of these events happen, ever. From the bar manager announcing that there would be no draft beer on the night, to the next-to-top-bill band splitting up two days before the event, to the headliners missing their ferry and not having a single mobile phone between them...

At the end of it, the thing takes on a momentum of its own, and all you can really do is make sure the doors open and the venue doesn't fall down; the rest is basically damage control!

Cheers

Jim

Maybe look at this from another angle. The film company wants to get this right, I think this is something that has been expressed all along by both them and Rebellion. If they had nothing to show that they were happy with leading up to Kapow then from a design perspective I would not have been happy releasing anything just to 'please the fans'. Personally I'll ride with the hype and wait for something official to come that is polished and supplied with pride by the film makers.

It's OK pleasing the fans and letting something out, but what if we all thought it was shit because they'd rushed it just to placate us? Enjoy the tension, the anticipation and the anal retention prior to the release of the proper first pics and trailer.

Given the entire film is all shot (and presumably the promo photos were taken at the same time?) that'd be a bit worrying, surely?

If they havent got anything now they think looks good, wheres it gonna magically appear from?

Absolutely - everyone understands that circumstances change, although not even being able to show a few stills is pushing it... I can't imagine they could have come up with something more badly shot than the single official picture they have put out, and is the only one magazines and sites can run.

The longer this goes on, the more I feel like I'm obliged to see this film, rather than actually want to.

Maybe look at this from another angle. The film company wants to get this right, I think this is something that has been expressed all along by both them and Rebellion. If they had nothing to show that they were happy with leading up to Kapow ...

Given the entire film is all shot (and presumably the promo photos were taken at the same time?) that'd be a bit worrying, surely?

Not necessarily. There is going to have to be a lot of post-production work done and they don't want to screen something that looks shoddy - I think everyone has learned the lesson from the sneaked photographs on set, letting anything out before it is ready to go could really spoil it for potential viewers. I'm just guessing, but that'd be what I'd want to do so that when you see the first footage you think "oh hell, yeah, I'm seeing that even if I get one of my nuts trapped in a lift door (again)." There are, obviously, pluses and minuses to that approach but if you are relying heavily on special effects to make the film shine, it would explain all the secrecy and the keeping of cards close to their chest.

Personally, I'm not that bothered about seeing footage or piccies from the set until they are good and ready to blow my mind - in some ways the Net has rather spoiled us, dripfeeding in tasty news morsels all the time.

Not sure I can do justice to the story of Kapow, so here are some pictures....

The amazing Pete Wells showed that his artistic talents are not totally reliant on Powerpoint and drew this wonderful portrait of me... The inset box, which is what I see through my avatar's eye, is in fact Mr Wells in full "glory":

And here, well, this one was a true honour to receive. I do believe that Young Master Kerrin will be taking a table at the next Con to sell some portraits:

Love it!

True enough, but i thought the film was deliberately effects light in comparison to the last effort at least.  An image of a costume or lawmaster prop shouldnt need a lot of post production if its been shot well  - it shouldnt need any really!

That said, I'm not a spoiler hound for this and am looking forward to the new Who almost entirely spoiler free, which i think is the best way to do it.  There must be some mindblowing images to be released - Jocks seen them we hear.  The main crux of the gripe that I think is valid is that they themselves said something would be available so they reaised the expectations, and Kapow sold tickets on the back of that.

I did actually ask a question along those lines during the 2000AD panel Phil. If funds allowed, did the panel think a 2000AD publication aimed at younger readers would be a good idea? Didn't really get much of an answer, though Dave Gibbons did say how it was odd that comics used to be aimed at 10-13 year olds and now they were mostly aimed at adults. I'm for it myself but the amount of money needed makes it a moot point.

What's the demographic for the typical US superhero comic? Is there still a healthy section of younger readers or is it mostly older readers?

Anyone know how CLiNT is doing, sales-wise?

I know there will be some big set pieces scenes with heavy CGI but the impression I kind of get is it will be more like how they use special effects these days in TV shows you'd never have thought even used them. I think it has come up before here, but see:

http://mikesenese.com/DOIT/2010/01/mind-blowing-green-screen-tv-and-film-effects-and-how-to-do-them-yourself/

The bulk of it might not be flashy work that jumps out at you, but a skim of CGI to take the locations and give them a bit of a futuristic twist. It has to make you wonder about the Lawmaster photo and whether they are going to give that a little oomph too.

It'll be interesting to see the first footage when they are ready, as well as the making of DVD extra - it might explain all the on-set security.

Glad the weekend was a success for everyone involved despite the lack of any JD material.

Why cant MM treat everyone like an adult [and behave like one] and just state the reason why there was no JD material instead of trying to sweep under the rug ?  ::)

I had my ticket but i wasnt feeling too good and i couldnt face crowds or pubs/socialising or even going to London.Nothing to do with any of you BTW but it was gorgeous weather and i needed to go and get mind and body together in the countryside which is what i did.

Okay folks, here are the sketches that I managed to gather. I didn't get any on the Saturday at the Con, too busy enjoying chats with people and also being Dredd, so I started in the Pub, with this highly talented bunch off here!
I bought a new A5 sketch journal especially for this event and all future forum gatherings and pub meets!

Conor does Dredd and the pressure was on being the first.

KevLev does Hershey (my favourite hairstyle and with the eye make up of another style I like)

El Chivo moves into Johnny mode and shows how easy it is to draw (stop it) Johnny's helmet!

SuperSurfer comes up with the Superfiend and can't stop adding detail until we have to force him to stop.

An excellent start to this new sketchbook, who will be next at the next drinking session?

Now the actual con sketches. I just realised that I did get one on Saturday, so that's first!

David Ballie sat near the 2000AD stand, very clever!

Clint Langley who was just going to lunch as I collared him.

Huy Truong favourite of the weekend and going for a fun commission in the near future ;)

Ben Willsher after this me and Pete were basically thrown out of the con, as they were shutting up :D

It doesn't have one, not since the originally announced February 2011 one came and went.

It's no secret that Strip's had problems getting off the starting blocks - the Monsterology project that PJ Holden and I were doing for them (as mentioned in the recent Meg article) is now unfortunately happening elsewhere - but I'm hoping there'll be some more news at Bristol.

John Freeman's poured an incredible amount of work and dedication into it, and I'm hopeful we'll soon see the outcome of it all.

OK finally back and rested from KaPow and a great King's X gig where I had the added pleasure of meeting top bloke and fellow boarder Steve Longdon!

My take on the event:

The 2000ad panel on Saturday was cool and it was reassuring to hear Jock say that the rough footage he'd seen of the Dredd movie was hardcore and shit-hot as was the Lawmaster.
Matt Smith added that we should not expect the finished film until spring 2012.

Little disappointed not to see any stills, footage or input from the filmmakers but I can appreciate why there wasn't.

Steve Dillon was a top bloke as was the lovely Duncan Jones-who signed my copy of Moon (and the Wife blagged a nice signed Source Code poster) and was also kind enough to answer my question on his love of 2000ad and if he'd be up for directing a Rogue Trooper movie-which he said he'd love to do if he could incorporate the bio-chips successfully.

The Stan Lee awards ceremony was a bit of a shambles-but it was the first one so there were bound to be a few teething troubles and hopefully they'll sort this out for next year.

Sunday was a shorter day for me as I was begin to suffer a bit of queuing fatigue, but I did have the pleasure of meeting the charming Liam Sarp and his lovely partner and picked up my signed Dredd print and even though he was running out of time for his slot he was kind enough to do me a Dredd sketch- which I'll treasure.

The venue layout was very good and overall I had a great time and would certainly consider next year's.

You must have read my mind, that would have been the very thing Id have asked, (or maybe Stront...)

Looks like for a first go the con was a good one, must book a table for next year !

Commando Forces must have had a ball as Dredd, awesome to have a true crowd pleaser in our midst  ;-)

Amazing as it may seem, I actually bought some non Dredd/2000AD items over the weekend, this being my favourite The Gutters Omnibus Vol 1

It's an oversized coffee table book about 15" square and it's bloody lovely. The cover drew me to it as it's taken from an old pic on a skyscraper and all the superheroes are slightly raised from the page. I always ask people selling non Dredd items to try and sell their stuff to me, so obviously I asked the bods at this stand to have a go. They did a good job and I said I would be back near the end of the con to get it, as it was big. It was priced at £30 and when I eventually came back they knocked off a tenner, they said many people say they will be back but I was the only one and so they did that for me. How nice!

Without me jabbering on about it I thought I would swipe a quote from their website about the book.

QuoteIn brief, Gutters is a series of standalone pages that parody the comic book industry and the heroes and characters that dwell within. Think of it as an editorial cartoon targeting comic books, and you'll understand where we're going with it. Gutters is written by Ryan Sohmer, with Lar deSouza as Art Director and Ed Ryzowski serving as colorist. As for who will be doing the actual art, well, that's where things get interesting (and slightly different). Rather than have one artist pencil each page, we elected to have a rotating roster of professional artists, among them some giants in the comic book industry alongside new and emerging talent.

This is very funny and the perfect book just to dip in and out of when you feel like it. I've added a few pics, just to show the quality of the whole thing!

I've uploaded the 2000AD talk here

Does anyone have a photo of the panel that I can use on the page?

Any chance of a downloadable MP3*? I'm getting requests to install a missing plugin on that page and then being told there is no such plugin available.

* Or if you are worried about bandwidth I can upload it to Tumblr.

It's in Windows Media .wma format at the moment. I'll see about converting it to .mp3 of you could try and download the file. I'll add a link on the page.

Wake, if you go to page 23 there are two close pics of the panel one of the left side and one of the right. That's the best I could do!

The add on worked straight away for me and I'm listening to it now...

Absolutely Colin! I'd forgotten about Strip when I wrote that. I'm really looking forward to seeing what it's like and I'll more than likely buy a few to dish out to mate's kids. Pester power! Is the plan to have it ready for Bristol? I've lost track of what the release date is now.

I really hope so too Gordon. John's a top bloke and from the bits of Strip I saw at BICS the comic has a proper fighting chance of success if it can get to the shelves.

The Monsterology art that PJ had at BICS was phenomenal, myself and Jim Campbell were just stood there gobsmacked at one of the double page spreads, unbelievable. On my 'must buy' list when it appears. I've already got a sketch of Harry Wilmington!

Haven't had a chance to post since the weekend but have to say I had a great weekend at Kapow! Really glad I went. Was good to meet again with so many boarders and to meet more of the guys for the first time – in particular those who travelled from afar.

Really enjoyed the Mills and O'Neill talk. Missed first 10 mins as I queued for so long and once I was in I had to hunt for a plan/timetable. Why wasn't there one in that bag of crappy posters? Shame about the turnout at the talk. Was surprised I didn't see more of you lot there. I later found out some were concerned that they should get queueing for the 2000AD talk. Pat Mills is always interesting to listen to and was good to hear his and Kevin O'Neill's tales about the old guard at IPC. So depressing to hear about 2000AD artwork being chucked in skips when Murdoch bought IPC. Sacrilege. The audience was told how the bigwigs at IPC thought the Mills & O'Neill Robusters was a load of rubbish but they were torn between their hatred of Mills and O'Neill's work and their greed, as 2000AD was selling so well. Well I must admit I had goosebumps when images of this 'rubbish' was being projected as I recall the impact these particular episodes had on me as a kid.

Judge Chivo:

One of the highlights was watching and talking to artists as they were drawing and looking through their portfolios. I rarely get to see original art in the flesh. So much amazing work. I would say it was inspiring but quite the opposite. Scared the life out of me due to just how good the pros are. Case in point were Brian Bolland and in the background are Duncan Fegredo (Sean Phillips is just out of picture):

Gary Erskine was very generous with his advice on inking. Stunning work from him as well. He was super busy and was actually working. I did offer to fill in his blacks. Turns out he has an assistant for that already who works many hours a week!

I missed CF as Dredd. I was only interested in the talks I mentioned above.

Drinks session was a good laugh as usual. (Apologies to the fella I missed out when getting a round in). Was humbled to do sketches for CF and Spirite (apologies for not remembering your avatar). Many thanks to Lady Festina for organising drinks.

Folks- a bit rude, but I really liked the pic of CF walking that Emps posted at the top of page 29, so i've roughly (very roughly) cropped into it and pasted it on a plain black BG to have as a wallpaper. If anyone else wants it- the link is below.

Apologies to whoever took the photo for nicking it, but I really like the image.

If I get grief for this I'll happily take it down.

I thought i would let yourself and others know that some of the artwork that was skipped was salvaged and is now in collections.I know who has some of it but they wont sell. >:(

There is still a certain amount that wasnt salvaged that ended up in landfill and i will guess that about 50 percent of it is lost forever.IPC did contact various artists about wether or not they wanted the art before it was chucked and one example was Belardinelli who declined the offer because he was concerned over the shipping costs amongst other things.

Maxwell, not Murdoch. there are many things to dislike Murdoch for, but that's not one of them.

Not disagreeing with the sentiment though.

A bit surprised that the Art Editors didn't get the opportunity to act as caretakers for the art though, or sell it on behalf of the artists - I remember seeing art in FP for sale in the early 80s so it's not like there was no market for it.

This kind of thing seemed to have been going on right across the industry too. I remember reading somewhere that in the Marvel offices in the 70's, artists work was chopped up into individual frames and handed out to kids who were being given tours of the building.

There just seems to have been total lack of any regard for the work of comic artists until relatively modern times.

Is it the UK and American comics industries that used to treat this wonderful art form with such distain? l'm sure  Countries like France and Italy  have museums celebrating this kind of artists work. It's an horrendous thought to think that my favourite artists work ( the late great Belardinelli) was consigned to a skip. His work was fine art in it's execution and imagination.

Ha ha!

I'll elaborate. There was a comic-based indie film called Electric Man selling merchandise to help with distribution costs. Me and him bought some (I got a comic of the film by 2000AD's Graham Manley) and the director guy got us to write our names in a book. He then explained that everyone who had bought anything will make it onto the credits at the end of the film! Good ploy, eh?

I think that's what CF was referring to, unless he was talking about the biscuit game we filmed on our phones with me, him, Kerrin and two tramps...

I noticed the exact same thing, didn't help I was looking at it upside down either. I was thinking "what the hell is he doing" and next thing I know Dredd was on the page.

He's eyes lit up when I asked him to draw me a Dredd though. Everyone else was asking for a Batman or Constantine and when I put my sketch book infront of him he asked what I would like, I told him his choice either Batman or Dredd. He's eyes lit up like I said and he just went "Can I do you a Dredd"? lol. I was like Hell Ye!
