I wish this was hardback, but: OH YES!

The price and lack of "Vol. 1" makes me wonder how complete this will be. The collections we put out a while back barely touched the Eagle strips and came to around 120 pages or so all in, IIRC. Considering the Thirteenth Floor ran to some 400 pages in Eagle alone, plus the Scream! strips, I can't see how this can collect everything. I'd be really disappointed if this wasn't just a first book collecting the Scream! strip and the the wrap-up portion of the Eagle run, with at least one or two more books collecting the rest of the Eagle stories. Yeah, they get a bt silly later on, but it would be a shame to miss the opportunity.

Great line-up in Prog 2100 with Kingdom back, Brink back, Skip Tracer bac... oh hold on it it go? Anyway and Fiends of the East Front back with an intriguing premise - do we know the creative team for this one?

Elsewhere the Meg gets a shiny 400th issue too with Lawless and Blunt amongst the treats.

We get another Misty volume - I'd missed this was happening but that might just be me being rubbish? Sniper Elite gets a great Colin Wilson cover, can we have more Colin Wilson please Tharg

BUT for me the biggest news in this month of pretty big stuff I'd say is the floppie with Meg 400 is Mind Wars - never read it but can't wait to get my hands on more Redondo goodness!

That's the problem, it's not developing...at all. I have never seen a story work so hard to go nowhere, the art is very good though.

Not keen on Skip Tracer so far but good in Tharg's for finally taking heed of the eternal criticism and scheduling a quick follow up to a new strip.

More importantly, I had no idea Peter Capaldi was an artist in a formerlife.

I was completely unaware of this one brilliant way to check if I had PPI.

Skip Tracer's by-the-numbers stuff, but I'd rather see something new not quite work than new creators put on old strips getting by on name recognition.

I also agree that Ewan McGregor would be the most disappointing thing about an Obi-Wan Kenobi film, too, but there's no way I'm jumping into that thread. *

* A lot of very deep-seated issues being worked out there, and when the dust settles nobody involved will ever be quite the same person they were before:  https://youtu.be/T5XYNQv6F_o?t=38s

Original fiction featuring the story of Judge Dredd's evil twin Rico's years on Titan, finally revealed.

You know about me. I'm Rico Dredd, Joe Dredd's big brother.

I'm the clone that went bad, that brought shame on Judge Fargo's legacy.

I was a Judge, the best the Academy of Law ever turned out. The very best. But after less than a year on the streets of Mega-City One, I was brought down, taken in. It was Little Joe who caught me; second-best Judge there's been.

Broken, sentenced, stripped of office, I was shipped out to the brutal moon Titan, to do my twenty years' hard labour. Yeah, you know about Rico Dredd.

But do you know what really happened? Why I did it? What it was like, out there on the edge of space, doing time in the Bronze?

Truth is, mister, you know stomm about me.

KHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNN!!!

The Gospel According To Jesus Redondo deserves to be reprinted close to original publication  size in one of those  lovely Treasury of British Comics, not as a squint-o-vision floppie.

Rigellian hotshots all round.

Finally - the physical version!

JUDGES Volume 1 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/JUDGES-1-Michael-Carroll/dp/1781086397) Paperback  – 10 Jan 2019

New fiction series exploring the (very) near-future origins of Judge Dredd's Department of Justice

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 2033 A.D.

In a time of widespread poverty, inequality and political unrest, Special Prosecutor Eustace Fargo's controversial new justice laws have come into effect.

Protests and violence meet the first Judges as they hit the street to enforce the Law; the cure, it's clear, is far worse than the disease.

Is this a sign of things to come?

Looking forward to Michael Carroll's Rico collection.  As I don't do eBooks, is it the same format as the previous collected editions - two previously-published-as-eBooks plus a third novella seeing publication for the first time?

The thing about Rico Dredd... he's not much of a character. He's a bad guy with a face full of plumbing, and little in the way of personality. There's not much substance to latch onto and claim ownership of. Some, but not much.

I understand Pat's general complaint, but you are getting into very sticky territory regarding a character like Rico, who has appeared in as many flashback and hallucinatory moments as possible, from "Behold, the Beast!" to "Helter SKelter"  - unlike Satanus, who you can argue has a life outside of the Dredd continuity, Rico is like saying whoever came up with the phrase Lawmaster should get asked permisssion before they use one in the strip.

I can see it might have been politic to ask Pat if he fancied writing it given the Satanus thing, or even to have asked Pat for a list of characters he wanted to be considered for before farming out when he first started to make an issue of this (to fair, often times with more reason than here).

It'd also have a bit more weight if he had given Martin Edmond his due credit on the Accident Man film, beacuse if the "freelancers dont speak out".... Reading PAt's 2000AD history he does seem to have a fairly complex xystem of what and who counts and who and what doesnt, so you can't blame Tharg for instigating his own equally esoteric version....

Oh, and take your beef to Tharg, not Michael, I would suggest as a first step

They give him regular work, a significant portion of which is basically recycling. This despite his ongoing and very public criticism of the company. Then there was that colouring book thing (IP issues a go go), which continues to exist. Also, I'm not sure anyone needs to read a Rico book that'd probably end up being another wafer-thin rant about the establishment, peppered with conspiracy theory.

Pat should think himself lucky. Almost any other writer would be kicked to the kerb by a publisher for this sort of thing.

I'll confess the same thought has occurred to me. In a less benign corporate environment, a freelancer asserting 'moral' rights to IP they've already sold under work-for-hire terms that mean they have not one single leg to stand on legally would have been reminded quite forcefully long before now of the reality of their situation.

Aside from The Black Hole, my favorite ABC Warriors story was written by Alan Moore.

I was chatting with former IDW head honcho Chris Ryall a couple years ago, and he suggested strong interest in producing an ABC Warriors series, but couldn't get it of the ground due to the restriction about using a different writer for the characters.
I know IDW can be hit or miss, but the thought of new ABC Warriors material with a completely fresh creative team did have certain appeal.
The characters have always had huge potential in my opinion, and sometimes haven't been serviced with the best of story-lines (nevertheless always the best of artwork).

Having said all that, I've been a huge Pat Mills fan all my life, and regularly enjoy his current work in the Prog.

I'm torn on the John Smith thing. It's hard to know fully what went down there, and even what the current situation is. But I get the feeling he basically filed some scripts and then – due to horrible personal circumstances – basically went dark for two years. It comes across now like bridges have been well and truly burnt, but I hope that's not the case. His voice was unique and exciting, and is – as I've said before – the reason I stuck with the Prog.

As for others taking over, though, I don't know. Indigo Prime worked nicely with Kek-W behind the typewriter. Devlin Wauigh, though, just didn't click. McConville just doesn't have the right voice for me, and perhaps he was deck-clearing but bringing tantalising glimpses that were presumably Smith's background texture to the fore seemed an awfully strange decision. Still, these are Rebellion's characters, to do with as they please, and if the people behind them won't write anything further, and the editor reckons others can do a good job, that's their prerogative.

This is an interesting point, not least given that a strip's visuals are often as much of a 'voice' as what's said/written.

Post by: Jim_Campbell on 10 July, 2018, 02:39:12 PM
Also worth noting that assigning Smith's authorial voice to someone else's character gave us what is near-universally regarded as the best Rogue Trooper story, whilst 'Red Planet Blues' remains my favourite ABC Warriors story by some margin.
Title: Re: 2018: forthcoming thrills..
Post by: Steve Green on 10 July, 2018, 02:42:13 PM
Depends on the strip for me.

If a strip starts with a varied line-up then it works up to a point - multiple artists are having their input (see Dredd), plus not many artists could keep up with doing it day in day out anyway, so it's just a reality.

For those who have a stamp on it - Carlos on Strontium Dog, Ian on Robohunter, then I find another artist taking over hard going.

I believe Kingdom was held back for Richard's availability, so it seems to be preferred to hold back for certain strips.

And I'm not comfortable with the way John appears to have been treated either - I've been dipping in and out of the prog and megazine this year because I'm not really feeling it, and having that hanging over strips doesn't really encourage me to do so.

It may be a great strip, but hard to separate that from the circumstances.

Also in general with a couple of exceptions, having other writers take over characters doesn't have a great track record either.

You do indeed make a good point, Bolt, and I don't want to give the impression that I think the artist on a comic strip is somehow of lesser importance than the writer. That's not my belief. However, I do feel Slaine and the ABCs are defined more by Mills's voice than by the work of any individual artist. I'm not saying you can't get interesting one-offs or stories with different writers – as Jim suggests, few would fault Cinnabar – but for the most part I'd rather new creators came up with their own unique stories.

I think the John Smith thing was unfortunate but also an exception rather than the rule. Whether it was right or wrong to pass the characters on, if John hadn't encountered the horrible personal circumstances and continued supplying scripts I suspect there would have been 0% chance that he would have been taken off IP in favour of someone else.
Title: Re: 2018: forthcoming thrills..
Post by: IndigoPrime on 10 July, 2018, 03:06:19 PM
I suspect James is right. Be mindful that while Smith was – albeit sporadically and somewhat randomly – filing content to 2000 AD, his strips were never given to other writers. It was only when – from what I can tell – he went dark for something like two years, leaving Tharg with a half-finished series, that cogs started turning. Perhaps that was bad timing. Perhaps had Smith resurfaced a few months earlier, things would be different. But things are what they are. (And, as I've said elsewhere, while I do sympathise with Smith and love his work, you can't just cut off all contact and expect to pick up where you left off.)

Sure, but with Indigo Prime, Rebellion already had (and has presumably paid for) a chunk of script. So that wasn't so much a dangling plot thread as content that could only be used if someone finished it.

I could be wrong, but from memory of the various postings here and elsewhere, John Smith had completed the first two episodes and was working on another after a long hiatus. I believe Lee Carter had completed his art for those episodes too, so I'm assuming Tharg was left with a dozen pages of complete story and a tough choice to make between binning the whole lot, proceeding without Smith, or waiting and hoping that the whole story could be completed at some point by Smith.

Beyond that, I've no idea what's happened between Tharg/Rebellion and Smith, but hopefully it doesn't preclude a return for him at some point - he's one of my favourite voices in the prog, and I'd like to see more by him at some point. That new writers have taken over on Devlin Waugh and Tyranny (though perhaps that latter will be a one-off, rather than an ongoing thing) suggests a more major breakdown, but we'll see.

re: Pat's complaint about Rico. Eh... I'm a little iffy on that one. Yes, he's Pat's (and Mick's) creation and the story is relatively important in the development of Dredd, but it feels a little off for a writer who has essentially had nothing to do with Dredd (barring some half-dozen or so episodes?) for decades to erupt about another freelancer exploring the character (especially for a strip that is, now Wagner has stepped back significantly, more of a corporate strip). I remember the blow-up about Satanus and I had a little more sympathy for that, as Pat had returned to the old dino several times and had crossed him over to his other strips (that said, it had been quite some time since anything had happened with Satanus at that point, and he wasn't as clearly a "Pat Mills" character as someone like Nemesis or Hammerstein, so I could see how editorial and all involved had gone forward with Satanus Unchained expecting no issues).

Quality is the strongest argument against treating stories like shoes at a bowling alley (https://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?topic=44818.0).

Mills has a solution that addresses Bolt's concern for artists by compensating creators for all exploitation of characters and strips they originate in exactly the same way Rebellion already do with regard to merchandise. *

If anyone else uses something you created, you're paid a fixed percentage. Giving originators a stake in this way incentivises originality in new creators and publishers alike.

For the avoidance of further misunderstanding, Mills recently posted that he's sought and received assurances that nobody else will be writing characters he created (https://www.facebook.com/PatMillsComics/posts/10212993716012527?comment_id=10213012351798410&comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R0%22%7D).

* Full details here (http://viciousimagery.blogspot.com/2017/02/loving-alien-guide-to-running-2000ad.html), outlined by Mills's own Nemesis, Dark Dave Bishop, in a guide to running 2000ad that's well worth reading in its own right:

"Egmont Fleetway pays creators 10% of our net revenue from sales. This is split equally – 5% to the writer, 5% to the artist. However, if the item is drawn by someone other than the original artist creator, we split the 5% art royalty 80/20 – the artist whose work is being sold gets 4%, the character's creator gets 1%.

In the case of the Prog 2000 t-shirt, this gets even more complicated because it features five characters. The writer split is fairly straight forward, going to Pat Mills (1% as creator of Nemesis), Robbie Morrison (1% as creator of Nikolai Dante), Gerry Finley-Day (1% as creator of Rogue Trooper),  and John Wagner (2% as creator of Judge Dredd and Strontium Dog).

But when it comes to the art split, the headaches really begin. The artist, Brian Bolland, will get 4% of our net revenue. The other 1% of the art royalty is split between Kevin O'Neill (0.2% as creator of Nemesis), Simon Fraser (0.2% as creator of Nikolai Dante), Dave Gibbons (0.2% as creator of Nemesis), and Carlos Ezquerra (0.4% as creator of Judge Dredd and Strontium Dog)."

That's from 19th of May and considerably predates this latest Rico kerfuffle, though, suggesting the issue might not be completely settled.

QuoteI had to discourage a serious attempt by the Phoenix to do a young Slaine about four years ago, so my concern about these new writers is real. If the Phoenix project had gone ahead it would have been a watered down Slaine for the middle classes. Eugh!

Given that it wouldn't have been 'Young Slaine', unless there was a serious proposal to license the character to The Phoenix I never heard about, is Pat now claiming to have ownership over 'all barbarian stories with a Celtic flavour'...?!

That revenue split sounds like a reasonable approach, though one that has some wrinkles that would be interesting to see dealt with.

The link to Pat's "keep off the grass" statement is interesting - there's a fair amount in there I agree with, and Pat's position on strips like Slaine is entirely understandable and seems to be respected by Rebellion. That said... M.A.C.H. 1? The strip even Pat has said was a direct rip-off of The Six Million Dollar Man? Like a whole host of strips at the time, it was clearly a comic response to a popular series in other media, and while it had a 2000AD spin put on it, it's hard not to have some sympathy with the idea that it was Steve Austin with the serial numbers filed off. John Probe was also almost a "house character" from the off (writing credits alone on the strip run to Pat, John Wagner, Roy Preston, Nick Allen, Charles Herring, Alan Hebden, Robert Flynn and Steve MacManus across the life of the strip) and while Pat has clearly staked his claim here with his sequel/reimagining, Greysuit, the "ownership" of M.A.C.H. 1 doesn't feel as clear-cut as something like Nemesis, Slaine et al. I wonder if he would have been quite as protective about John Probe if he hadn't mined M.A.C.H. 1 for a reimagining of his own?

I don't imagine Mills has much time for Frank Miller or his work, but he'd do well to heed Dwight's advice about the importance of choosing the ground upon which you fight[1].

Mills & McMahon are undeniably the creators of Rico[2], but arguing that only they should decide when or how that character is used seems more like dogged determination to follow a point of principle to its logical conclusion than heartfelt anguish.

On the other hand, Slaine, ABC Warriors, Nemesis, Finn, and Defoe - the starting points for that line of logic - I'm happy to watch disappear over the horizon alongside their creators[3].

[1] To be fair to Mills, the Mach-1 comments were in response to Whatabouttery from Jay Gunn.

[2] ... and, therefore, under the terms described above, would be entitled to a tiny stake in any future exploitation of the character. Mills & McMahon would receive a credit on any film or TV show that made use of the character. Few would argue that shouldn't involve financial compensation, so it seems strange to argue that exploitation of the character in other media should be any different.

[3] ... or, as Mills would presumably agree, for Alex Di Campi (https://2000ad.com/post/3623) to weigh her desire to write Slaine against her willingness to send 1% off to Torremolinos every week, marked 'paid with thanks'

I like a lot of stories written by people other than the original creators of strips but I do think the original creators deserve recognition and compensation and I think Mills has a point about the creators wishes about other writers working on their strips being respected. I also think that there is a good argument that rights were sold too cheaply because the system demanded it in the past. creators had no choice other than to sell their entire stake in something and have no guarantee of a credit if they wanted to work in UK comics up until the late 1970's Rebellion Bought the IP, they can respect Mills wishes or not as a gentleman's agreement, the only way to guarantee the creators rights is to transfer some ownership back to them. If they were to sell their IP there is no guarantee that any subsequent owner would uphold the same agreement. If the agreements were part of the sale than the IP would be worth less then if the new IP holder was free to act however they whished.

Characters created for someone else's strip or a corporate strip are a more complicated issue. The originator is already working within someone else's sand box so the ideas can only ever be so original, and if no one else can use them in a shared universe there probably isn't a compelling reason to let them be created in the first place. Dredd had a bit of an issue (also an issue with Dredd and Anderson) where different writers tell complex and far reaching stories that have absolutely no effect on each other, it seems at times like they exist in small unconnected bubble universes within the comic.

For a real mess though, I present to you; Friday. Friday is a re-boot of Rogue Trooper Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons created RT but Gibbons and Will Simpson created Friday, but Friday is basically Rogue so was he actually created by Finley-Day Gibbons & Simpson? Maybe not. Gibbons IIRC made Friday how he thought RT should be, essential expunging Finley-Days input so maybe it is just Gibbons and Simpson. Friday then becomes Tor Cyan under Kev Walker and John Tomlinson... but does that make Tor created by Finley-Day Gibbons Walker and Tomlinson?

Whenever Pat Mills says anything about middle class folk it reminds me of those vehemently homophobic politicians who turn out to have a profile on Grindr.

Also, WTAF is he on about? What has class got to do with anything in this instance? Is it just 'cos they (apparently) sell the comic in Waitrose?

God knows. You'd think he'd be supportive of a comic full of original strip that, against all the odds, has managed to survive and thrive in the current climate, rather than dismissing it with a sneer. And, like Jim said, why shouldn't they do a barbarian strip? Sláine isn't exactly unique in the world.

Steve: It wasn't made clear, but the 'supportive' comment was referring to The Phoenix, rather than 2000ad and/or the forum run under its auspices.

I don't suppose anyone is obliged to be supportive of any comic they don't like, for whatever reason. Certainly not one they believe* was trying to use a character they created in a way that wouldn't benefit them in any way.

The exploitation of work by others without compensation being the reason for the remarks under discussion.

From my perspective, continuing ABC Warriors and Slaine without the unique authorial voice of Pat Mills would be a creatively worthless endeavour, just as continuing Indigo Prime and Devlin Waugh without John Smith is.

I dunno about you, but I think the voice of both Warriors and Slaine has changed quite considerably since they began, not always for the better. On that basis, I think they could stand different writers. I also liked the recent Indigo Prime (including the addition of Revere) and Devlin Waugh.

I'd like to see John Smith back, though. There's no doubt about it: Cinnabar, Killing Time and Cradlegrave are among the very best series we've ever seen in 2000AD.

Robin

If Tharg had responded to the success of Cinnabar by putting Smith on Rogue, we may never have been blessed with those other strips. Smith's other Rogue Trooper strip, Enfleshings[1], was dismal, which is generally how things go with house characters.[2]

The fact we have to go back 30 years to find a franchise story everyone agrees was any good tells you everything you need to know. I don't have any problem with Tharg giving creators the heave-ho, but trying to franchise their strips is in nobody's best interests[3].

Pretty sure I didn't say that. I simply mentioned that it was my favourite ABC Warriors story — there aren't a lot of non-Mills entries into that canon to choose from, for obvious reasons. Maybe John Smith could have given us a cracking ABC Warriors tale, but we'll never know.

I'm slightly torn on this because the idea that franchising strips doesn't work for 2000ad is pretty shaky. all Dredd world strips are a franchise and that seems to work out pretty well. It's not that surprising that you have to go back 30 years to find solid gold classics because truely outstanding strips don't come along all that often. A strips legend grows with time to legendary strips are more or less always going to be from decades past. Aside from Dredd 2000ad hasn't routinely farmed strips out to replacement/alternative writers so examples are always going to be thin on the ground. Some of the strips that were rebooted in the late 80's and 90's were given to terrible writers, Millar and Flisher's original work was just as balls awful as their work on company IP.

Robohunter I enjoyed originally. Lovely art, entertaining enough scripts, but nothing that really made that big an impression on me. I don't think of it as a classic, levels of attachment may vary. The Mark Millar reboot is objectively awful (still nice art though) but the Peter Hogan run (although short) was probably my favourite. (The art quality rarely dips in 2000ad does it? That run have some simply stunning artwork) Give a property to a bad writer and you are going to get a bad strip.

So I disagree that 'franchises' produce worse strips.

But I don't really want to see IP flogged to death for decades either. There is something to be said for new ideas and constantly moving forward. Superhero comics are stuck on an infinite loop and it would be a real shame to see that happen to 2000ad. Funny as it would be to see the outrage a new book of Zenith by a new writer I wouldn't actually be interested in reading it.

In the past, Moore's basic position in any discussion of 2000AD work has always started with "Give me Halo Jones back." I suspect this is more for devilment on the part of the Bard of Northampton, and is just his way of saying "No, never" but it amuses him to pretend that there are circumstances where he might consider it, but attaches them to a demand he knows will never be accepted.

I sort of would want to see the other six books of Halo (by Moore and Gibson) on the other hand I'm not sure it would live up to expectations.  The three books stand together pretty well, with the last panel of the last book tying in to the first advert and cover.  I wanted to see the first three chapters of Star Wars, until they came out, written and (the first one) directed by the original creator.  Careful what you wish for...

Didn't he retire about ten years ago?  Before the Black Dossier, the three Nemo books and Jerusalem ;-)

Speaking of which, just read the Nemo books and the (comic pages of) the dossier - great stuff, well worth a read.  When I have slightly more time I may even read the more text-heavy pages...

Ian Gibson disputes this legendary anecdote - he says Moore had a few ideas but certainly didn't have the whole thing worked out. Gibson actually wrote and submitted books 4 and 5 but they were never commissioned. He also has a lot to say about Moore's general writing on HJ - "plot holes you could strain your vegetables through" was a favourite phrase.

Filed half-arsed art for the Samantha Slade story, gave up, and then at some point named a pin-up "topless Halo" and then acted like a massive prick about it (https://www.theguardian.com/books/2013/mar/21/halo-jones-topless-row-ian-gibson) when Rebellion said NOPE. Alan Moore wasn't thrilled about the last of those either.

I enjoyed it, but for an idea on how it would happen, and differ from the three books we know (this example with Moore's full blessing), look at the Neil Gaiman MarvelmanMiracleman books.  Quality writing, but of a completely different style to what went before.

Jimmy Broxton is the new artist on Storm Warning. (https://twitter.com/johnreppion/status/1019645749875879936)

Happy to see more Lillian and Broxton is a great choice... but hadn't it previously been announced that Tom Foster was returning? Maybe I'm misremembering. (I guess it could be a Nemesis the Warlock-esque situation, where Broxton is doing Book 2 whilst Foster is working on Book 3?)

Ditto.  Storm Warning was a top thrill for me, but I suspect Foster's wonderfully spacious art was a huge part of that.  I can see why the superb Broxton would be a solid choice for a replacement, but I'd rather see him on new projects of his own, and Foster back on SW... It all feels like it might go a bit Ten Seconders or Button Man IV to me... a fantastic artist stepping in, but just not the same.  But when does anyone ever get what they want, hmmm?

Interesting that in Prog 2057 "Thrills of the Furture" it was mentioned that Storm Warning: Green and Pleasant Land by Leah Moore, John Reppion and Tom Foster will return to the Meg.

There is just to look forward to in both Prog 2100 and Meg 400. As for Skip Tracer I remain optimistic that after the stumble in the first series we get a little more focus on why we should care for our lead, it it lands that we could have a good thrill on our hands and Tharg must have seen something in it to have commissioned two series back to back?

Does anyone know what Ales Kot is writing? His stuff is really hit and miss with me.

There's a fair bit to lift my chin there:
The Mighty W back on Dredd with Royalty
Flint on Judge Smiley, Happy Shrapnel could even make Skippy un skipable, and after Ian Edginton's  Shirley Holmes Victorian exploits, it looks like the rest of the year could be rather tasty  :D :D

It seems like MacNeil's in the same position as Massimo Belardinelli was in the late eighties; an artistic legend, hugely popular with readers, but without a regular strip to call his own.

I have a lot of goodwill for Skip Tracer - just because it's an original creation, rather than a reboot - but something tells me this isn't the end of editorial's search for a foot that fits his glass slipper.

The obvious solution would be to crown him the main artist on Dredd, so I assume MacNeil's temporarily bored of that and wants to spread his wings a little. I wish Defoe had worked out for him (and for Mills).

It was a good story, but the Meg's schedule utterly killed it for me.  Just seemed to go on and on and on, much like some of (also Colin's!) Devlin Waugh of a similar era.  Reading both again in one go, it was crazy how much better they read.

Misty Volume Three - apparently has a story about a wolf-girl, according to Newsarama (https://www.newsarama.com/40567-rebellion-september-2018-solicitations.html).  Doesn't say what the story is actually called, and doesn't have any details about the other story to be reprinted (I'm assuming that Misty Volume 3 is going to follow the format of the first two, and have two stories).

Spector might be the previously announced reworking of the Sam Street character from the early 1980s.

Well this is good news!

Dave Taylor doing Napoleonic vampires.  Given his fabulously detailed settings, that could be truly amazing.

Plus Kingdom and Brink back in the same prog! Pure elation, that feeling is.

A second chance for Skip Tracer to impress is welcome as well - from that blurb, it looks like they are foregrounding the psychic dimension, which SEEMS to be the USP of the character, Deckard meets Wolfie Smith sort of thing?  TBH it was hard to tell.

Not so mad about a longish Rob Williams Dredd - while I definitely appreciate the craft and the originality of his approach, plus the Flinty goodness which adds so much, they generally aren't my thing.

But the prospect of a follow-up to Harvey, one of my favourite recent Dredds, is something to tide me over! Fingers crossed McCrea is back on scribbles, he was fantastic on the original story.

Oh yum yum yum.

I remember Strawberry Delight having green on the wrapper at some point in the past, but I'm prepared to accept that might belong in the same category of false memory/delusion as an extra 350 million quid per week for the NHS.

David Hine (http://www.2000ad.org/?zone=droid&page=profiles&choice=DAVIDH)?  That's after a gap of about 22 years since last contributing to the GG.

In the interim done some damned fine comics elsewhere. Particularly 'Bulletproof Coffin' and 'Cowboys and Ants' both with the genius that is Shaky Kane. Lovely chap too.

Glad to have him back in Thargs bosom.

Just this morning I was thinking to myself that it would be a shame if the current series of Brink wasn't afforded the same space to move as the second, even if that means running through the Christmas Prog. Lo and Behold.

More importantly. It seems Rennie's cryptic hints in another thread meant something exciting!
Quote from: THARGThe Galaxy's Greatest Comic rounds out another storming year with a 100-page Xmas spectacular, featuring a stunning line-up of stories and creators.
- Judge Dredd tackles a sinister Christmas spirit in 'Jingle All the Way'
- Nolan Blake has to investigate a terrorist cell in Skip Tracer: 'Louder Than Bombs'
- vampire bounty hunter Durham Red takes down a criminal gang in 'Three Gifts'
- Celtic warrior Slaine learns a little of Ukko's nefarious past in 'The Bogatyr'
- Deadworld's survivors face down Judge Fear in 'Running Scared'
- something evil lurks in the woods in new folk-horror series 'Thistlebone'
- the master cult makes its move in Brink: 'High Society'
- the vampires take to the skies above WWI France in Fiends of the Western Front
- and the supernatural series Caballistics, Inc. comes to a close with the final ever episode 'Visiting Hour.'
-  Plus much more!

And then Rebellion, while GNASHING TEETH will issue "No, really, this is TOTALLY the Complete Cabs Special Edition with knobs on", and Rennie, grinning wildly, will write another episode two months later called "another visiting hour – mwahahahaha".

Tharg really seems invested in Skip Tracer, doesn't he?

it's truly excellent; they've just finished a 17-part series on folk horror films, a diverse lot that certainly starts with the Wicker Man but manages to end with Get Out, via Deliverance and the Blair Witch Project.

If Simon Davis is painting folk horror for the Prog, it's going to be proper chilling!

Yep, should do - from memory, it will cover all of the material we reprinted plus at least another 50-ish pages. Looking forward to grabbing a copy of it when it comes out, partly from curiosity to see how Rebellion's repro droids work compares, but mainly because, well... it's the fantastic Thirteenth Floor in hardback, innit?

Quite favourably TBH.  Considering some of the issues we've had with some of the Mega Collection and others of this age they've done a cracking job. The Tower King and House of Daemon volumes from Hibernia stand up well against this and give a good indication of the quality of workmanship there.

Just hope that when they get around to the next volume we get a hardback edition as well.

Mine arrived today. It is a thing of nightmarish beauty. The additional Eagle pages, not already published by Hibernia, are truly wonderful - I'd forgotten what horrific treatment Sgt. Ingram was dealt - and of course, it features the scene I've wanted to re-read for thirty years, Max's explanation about the erasure of Bert Runch from existence.

Look closely at my screen, Jerry Colin. See the way it swirls round and round? So restful. Doesn't it make you feel relaxed? Wouldn't it be nice to just buy the hardback... buy the hardback... slowly sink into its pages...?
