Oh I can't believe I almost missed this. Fantastic to have these back thanks for doing this Sheridan... but I do wonder how close I'd have got before Funt Solo's post. As I saw it though a couple of bits fell into place and I think he's right and I'll raise his Absalom to Absalom - Under a False Flag.

Last chance to get your voting hats on and dance around the voting tree on this one as I've count up results and post them here in the morning.

So time that I voted too then. I've always had issues with the clarity of Mark Harrison's art, but there is no denying the astonishing talent he has and unique design sense. Ron Smith however brought life to Mega City One like no one before and seen. So

Mark Harrison 1 : Ron Smith 4

I have to be honest I was shocked when Dom Reardon went out in the first round of the Current Tourney, though it was a very close run thing with Simon Coloeby. His high contrast art perfectly captures the grotesque horrors of Tharg’s darker side. Simon Harrison also shocked me in the first round of his tourney knocking out personal fav Colin Wilson, but I do love his art, but it can be marmite, losing out to the clean lines of Alan Davis in the next round.

Both artists show 2000ad’s dark underbelly but which one tickles you the most?

Time for you to decide your favourite as the droids square up to the tee…

Remember for this tourney you have 5 votes to distribute as you please between these two artists, whole numbers only. So you can vote 5 - 0; 4 - 1; or 3 - 2; either way depending on how much more you like one artist's work over the other.

If you can’t be doing with that just name your favourite - remember bold tags, or other ways of highlighting always appreciated - and I’ll give them 3 votes and nowt to the other droid.

Three day votes, so this one ends morning of Saturday 15th May

Remember we only consider work for Tharg in these Tourneys

What the heck is all this about - well we have a thread for that

How does this new voting work? Look here and why again?

I don’t understand how this works, what are the rules of the Ryder Cup - yep got ya covered there too

Anything else just ask and I’ll make something up. Most importantly have fun!

Hey Funt is that meant to be 4 : 1 to Massimo?

1977 all over again

Let's clear the decks before 1978 when we get an important start - one which actually backs up what I'm about to say. But let's go back to 1977. In the year 1977 2000ad started and in doing so brought with it an energy and a dangerous fresh energy like no other comic.

Prog 1977 shows that some things don't change. Alongside a cute Tharg story, celebrating this fun, little landmark we get new thrills. Aquila, only a couple of years old, as is Survival Geeks - which I will note I'm enjoying its relaxed, cheeky, charm so much more on re-read. Sure its fluff, but its such fun fluff and I'm absolutely sold in Neil Googe's art this time, fun clean and modern but with a nice sharp edge to avoid it becoming cute.

We also get new thrill Fall of the Deadworld - Tainted. We've had short prologues to this series, in one shots, last year but this does feel like something different. It could be seen as a tired concept. A tale told, The Walking Dead set in the land of Death. Its not though, as ever with 2000ad, since 1977, it takes popular culture tropes and spins them utterly, so that while they retain the trappings it becomes so much more. In this case, so much darker, so much richer and brutal. And so full of ideas it will lurch into ugly new directions a comic like The Walking Dead never would. Its so very 2000ad, down to its very core concept, and playful abuse of the rest of the entertainment world's darlings, but also in its unrelenting and uncompromising execution and growth.

Oh sure 1977 isn't / wasn't perfect. I mean blowing up Dredd after a very good opening story for what will becomes Dredd's next epic and one I'm very much looking forward to reading and then having the line 'Next Chapter in the Meg 371' is just annoying.

But as with 2000ad opening year the comic won't rest on its laurels and 1978 will herald even better things!

I guess the other factor is there any time pressure? Is there any pressing need / timescale for the art to be delivered or can you allow them more time to try to resolve any issues they may have.

The fact that their Etsy store is cleared might be concerning as to whether they have pulled up sticks?

Given that spoiler how involved has Mike Allred been with Crossover?

Crunch match. Times have been hard for Current Team and they find themselves in the wake of Classic Team by a margin that feels hard to pull back already. So time for them to pull out one of their really big guns. Even if Brendan McCarthy did go out in the 2nd Round of the Current Tourney it was to the eventual winner so his form is hard to read. But dagnabbit the moment they do this look what Classic hit back with a Quarter Finalist from their own tourney.

Both Brendan and Massimo are more than capable of producing magnificent, surreal, mind bending art. So I guess the question is which psychedelic wonderscapes rock your boat the most?... or do you just like bald men with beards in your art?

Just as the Current Team need a break the big names keep coming for the Classic Team. This time the Current Team have pulled out an artist responsible for one of, if not the, most popular new strips in years, last year. So this could get interesting.

Ron Smith though got to the semi final of the Classic Art Droid tourney and then was voted favourite over Mike McMahon to claim third place. So unsurprisingly confidence must be high in the Classic Team for this tie.

Mark Harrison got to the second round of the Current Tourney to only very narrowly get knocked out by the eventual runner up in that competition. Looking for signs of hope? Well Mark Harrison ran D’Israeli very close - D’Israeli then went on to run Ron Smith very close in the Champion of Champions event. So it will only take a slight shift in form for either of these artists for an apparent upset to come about. Is that possible…

VOTING CLOSED

So again the strangle hold Classic Team has on this competition tightens. They've used some big names to estabish it but the last two results have marked the sense of talent that has defined the Galaxy's Greatest. The Current Team has put forward artists that have been able to take votes but they will need to stop the flood soon to have any impact on this tournament.

Current Team 1 : Classic Team 4

Current Team 202 : Classic Team 313

Not sure if this needs it's own new thread but if you could share this wherever you can think it needs to go:

The family of our beloved Bolt have asked me to share a JustGiving page for his funeral.

Also - and I cannot emphasise this enough - don't be afraid to reach out if you're in pain and forgive yourself always. You are not alone ❤

Thank you for sharing his. Man this is so heart breaking.

Also last call here. Current Team need some points quickly, but you have to wonder if anyone going up against Brian Bolland was going to get them? Well you have today to decide.

For my vote I was surprised how close this one was. Brian Bolland was the man for me back in the day. His tight close style curiously tempered with utterly glorious imagination was the thing and oh those iconic images. As time has gone on however I've come to look for different things in my art and there is little doubt Lee Carter's work on Indigo Prime in particular has just been astonishing, absolutely astonishing.... but Brian Bolland... I'm not allowed ties so I'm going to let my natural biase towards Current creep in and go -

Lee Carter 3 : Brian Bolland 2
