As if the news of the morning wasn't bad enough for Current Team the Classic Team is rolling out some very big guns these last couple of rounds - if there was to be a strong start for the Current Team it's hard to imagine it not being pulled back...

That said to my surprise Brian Bolland actually only got to Round 2 in the Classic Tourney swamped as he was by a tide of love for Massimo Belardinelli - it wasn’t even that close. That feels a slight false view of this much loved droid.

Likewise Lee Carter got to the second round of the Current Tourney where he was swamped by a tide of love for Cliff Robinson. Can his crisp imaginative stylings surprise us against Bolland?

Time for you to decide your favourite as the droids square up to the tee…

Remember for this tourney you have 5 votes to distribute as you please between these two artists, whole numbers only. So you can vote 5 - 0; 4 - 1; or 3 - 2; either way depending on how much more you like one artist's work over the other.

If you can’t be doing with that just name your favourite - remember bold tags, or other ways of highlighting always appreciated - and I’ll give them 3 votes and nowt to the other droid.

Three day votes, so this one ends ….

Remember we only consider work for Tharg in these Tourneys

What the heck is all this about - well we have a thread for that

How does this new voting work? Look here and why again?

I don’t understand how this works, what are the rules of the Ryder Cup - yep got ya covered there too

Anything else just ask and I’ll make something up. Most importantly have fun!

Aliens, you want aliens - these two give you aliens and then some.

Kev O’Neill didn’t get past the Quarter Finals in the Classic Tourney, but then that is very probably due to the fact he drew Carlos there and so we’ll never know quite how well he’d have done in other circumstances. His victory in the Festive Fronts tourney possibly gives a clearer indication of how highly he is regarded.

Boo Cook was knocked out in the first round of the Current Artist tourney and he’s not got an easy tie here at all. Can he pull off one of the shocks of this or any other tourney?

Two lesser lights one could argue… could, you’d be wrong but you could...one of these went out in the first rounds and another didn’t even qualify - they are one of my indulgences or wildcards you could say. Mind Neil Googe did go out to the eventual winner so who knows? Anyway they will make for a great round of contrasting styles I’d suggest.

I love the work of Jim Baikie and I was quietly mortified when he didn’t qualify for the tourney proper back in November (was it?). His work on Skizz and New Statesmen for sister comic and therefore qualifying for consideration Crisis is some of my favourite ever in the house of Tharg. Let’s see if he justifies my love!

I’ve started to re-read Survival Geeks recently and doing that has made me appreciate just how under appreciated Neil Googe was in my mind. His work on that series is simply astonishingly good. I mean really. He is one of those modern artists that when I look at his work I really wonder if he’d been around in the early days just how lauded he’d be? Hope he gets a new series from Tharg soon.

Number 2 with a bullet and this time we have a particularly top player for the Current Team against a Droid who gave good Droid… or robot.

Ian Gibson was a shock early victim of the harsh draw in Round 1 of the Favourite Classic Artist as he pulled finalist Cam Kennedy, who he ran close. So to be honest we don’t really know his true form. He’ll be keen to come back I’m sure.

Fascinatingly though he has come up against another finalist, this time from the Current tourney - D’Israeli. The Droid who toppled the mighty Henry Flint and in the Champion of Champions ran Ron Smith very close. So while Ian Gibson might be misrepresented it's possible, juuust possible that Team Current could take both of these opening ties to take a shock early lead?

WAYHEY and here we go. The crowd has fallen into an excited silence as the first tie of this new competition gets ready to tee-off. It's redundant to say that we have two big hitters to get us started, as everyone involved in this is a massive talent. What we can do is look at the form.

Greg Staples - to many people’s surprise - actually went out in the first round proper of the Favourite Classic Artist tourney - but when you come up against the likes of Jesus Redondo!

Leigh Gallagher on the other hand made the Quarter Finals of the Current Artist tourney so goes into this competition with form on his side.

Can Leigh give the Current Artist Team a surprise early lead? Or will Greg make it clear just how tough this is going to be for artists representing the current Prog as they face off against much loved classic talent?

So my ongoing torture of these boards with a seemingly endless stream of vote based tournaments continues and next in line is

Artist Ryder Cup - Current vs Classic
 - or ARC-CvC as I might start to type it as I get lazy*!

What is that I hear you cry. Well I’ve mentioned this concept a lot and basically it’s a chance to see whether the old truism that the art in 2000ad was better in the good ol’ days is true. And assuming that holds (I’m 99.8% sure it will) just how wide the margin is.

The idea that the old stuff is better fascinates me as I’m not sure it's true. The problem is the art in the early issues played such a part in defining what we love, I think it would be near impossible for new material to top the old for the long term reader. I certainly fall victim to this. I adore the current crop of artists, I'm sure a good proportion are as good if not better than the artists of my youth, but ask me to say who is better than Mike McMahon and all of a sudden I clam up, get a little nervous and finally stutter out “err henry… flint… probably...” wondering if I’m saying that just to make sure I support current endeavours (I’m not Henry Flint is the definitive 2000ad artist).

I’d love to do a blind test and give examples of art, new and old, to a host of none readers and ask them which is best and see what those not immersed say… alas I can’t do that here and the closest I can get to is TOURNEY!!!!

So here, over the course of a standard number of posts I’ll lay out the format of the tourney. The rules, for what they are. A NEW VOTING SYSTEM - yes I loved the Dredd Ranking Tourney so much I decided to try something else a little different. A way to ignore the new voting system if you think it's rubbish, or can’t be bothered and anything else that comes to mind.

This one will kick Monday 3rd May with a fair wind.

*If I was less lazy I’d no doubt come up with a much smarter acronym than that - its so close to archive

Well come on it was always going to be this wasn’t it? Well as soon as we knew that the factor of being an Epic (or Dredd story for that matter) was going to play into America’s position. Even me and I’m rubbish at predicting this stuff sometimes!

Its the final everyone wanted and dreaded (pun… whatever) it's going to be a tough call for many. Others will already have a firm favourite in mind and likely had it from the start. Some will even vote for City of the Damned regardless and I’ll still whine about the Cursed Earth. But when all said and done none of that will matter and come Friday we will know which epic IS the best. No debates, no back chat… well some back chat I’m sure… The ticker tape cannons are lined up and ready, discussions of a European Epics League has started… but for which will win, nukes or the undead?

Seed 4 Apocalypse War (inc Block Mania) Progs 236-270

Vs

Seed 9 Necropolis - Progs 662 - 699

Still with the simple purity of popping the name of the Epic you prefer in a reply to this thread (remember to mark it clearly so I can spot it - bold tags are good) and then say whatever the heck you like to about these two great stories.

We’re 3 day votes for this one, so this one will close first thing in the morning Friday 23rd April

All links go through to AlexF’s simply brilliant Dredd Epics Ranked blog. You may need to scroll to find his write up of a particular story - but I’d suggest just reading the whole thing anyway - it's fantastic stuff.

Baffled by what’s going on here - well we have a a thread for that - though that might leave you more confused than anything.

Not sure about anything just ask and I’ll blag it.

As the nervous anticipation for the final builds normally these 3rd place play-offs are the calm before the storm. Here of course this one is not a dead rubber and fulfils a very important function, determining positions 3 and 4 in the rankings. Both of these are already big climbers but which will grab the prized 3rd spot and who will simply have to settle for climbing all the way to 4th?

YOU KNOW THE RIGHT ANSWER - so come on tell me. Oh and yes I know City of the Damned will get votes. I just accept that now...

Seed 11 Judge Child - Progs 156 - 181

Seed 10 Tour of Duty - Progs 1649-1693

Apologies folks - I'm on holiday at the moment and the internet connection where we are is a little unstable - so there may be the odd delay in things - bear with me - using phone as a hotspot at the moment and the poor boy is having to settle for Minecraft not Fortnite!

To business...

You could argue that Necropolis was the end of the original Dredd Golden age, the end of an era as old classic Dredd stumbled - we went through a period of change and when Wagner came back to the Prog to return the series to the heights of its powers it was a different beast. I would certainly argue that Tour of Duty is the pinnacle of Modern Dredd. A story that has a bit of everything which has made that new era of Dredd what it is at its very best, while retaining an absolute cohesion as a single story. All that matters now however is which you prefer...

Well wow we are really at the big hitters now. Two of the earliest Epics in this semi and both very, very different stories. One a straight up war story, singlar in its vision, art and focus. The other a collage of ideas, setting and imagination with a colladiscope of art work. All that matters now however is which is your favourite.

General / Dredd Epics Ranked - BETTER!!! 12th to 5th Place Play-off
« on: 12 April, 2021, 06:37:25 AM »
So here we go folks the very last of these to decide the topper-most Judge Dredd epics outside the big 4 (which aren’t actually the big four but I won’t return to my whining… at this point at least). There are some truly stunning stories here, all classics in their own way BUT which are the best DREDD and EPICS. Well that’s for you to determine…

Look at the list of 8 Dredd stories below and tell me your top three:

1 (your favourite) will get 3 points
2 (your 2nd fav) will get 2 points
3 (your 3rd fav) will get 1 point

(1)  America Megs (Vol. 1) 1-7

(2)  The Dead Man Progs 650-662

(3) Origins - Progs 1500-1504; 1505-1519; 1529-1535

(5) Day of Chaos Progs 1743-1789

(6) Terror / Total War Progs 1392-1399, 1407-1422

 (10) The Day the Law Died - Judge Cal - Progs 86 - 108

(15) The Pit - Progs 970 - 999

(16) Oz - Progs 545-570

I’ll give this one the full 4 days to run its course and hope to close voting first thing Friday 16th April . One note, I'm going away today for a week(ish) and we are meant to have wifi BUT if I go off line we might have a delay... fingers crossed we'll be fine

General / Dredd Epics Ranked - BETTER!!! 20th to 13th Place Play-off
« on: 08 April, 2021, 06:39:30 AM »
So a bit of twiddling and reflecting on some feedback - and thinking about making these upper placing as representative as possible I’ve rejigged the voting and the previous 20 - 17th votes are null and void - sorry folks BUT those who wish to (why oh why) get another chance to vote for City of the Damned and push it even higher up the rankings!... or do at least some justice to The Cursed Earth...

Look at the list of 8 Dredd stories below and tell me your top three:

1 (your favourite) will get 3 points
2 (your 2nd fav) will get 2 points
3 (your 3rd fav) will get 1 point

(47) City of the Damned - Progs 393-406

(40) Mechanismo - Megs 2.12-2.17; 2.22-2.26; 2.37-2.43

(30) Trifecta - Progs 1804-1812

(14) The Small House - Progs 2100 - 2109

(11) The Cursed Earth - Progs 61 - 85

(9) Machine Law - Progs 2024-2029 and 2115-2122

(8) Titan /Enceladus Progs 1862-1869, 1924-1928, 1940-1947

(7) Mandroid

Okay so instead of my normal blather I’ll intro this one with some logistics. Quarter finals. I’ve matched pairings by taking the highest Seed and putting it against the lowest Seed. One a day (with play-offs running along side) 3 days for these ones. Winners in the semis, losers into a play-off for positions 12-5… you’re confused - look I’m running this thing and I’m hanging on by my fingernails too!
