Oh wow - I got a No Prize - I'm excited to an extent that just isn't respectable... I don't get out as much as I used to.

The pressure is on with my name BUT I do have another question for Simon. Any more Lilly MacKenzie planned? That was good comics!

So many wonderful, wonderful 'entries' on this thread. I plan to start mine this weekend, but really its quite intimidating to try to put something alongside the quality here. The thing that will make me do it anyway. Well its for Bolt-01 of course, but also from the little I knew him he'd have wanted us to participate and have fun with it regardless of our respective talents.

That in itself is an incredible tribute to the man, as has been said - the best of us.

Only a day to go on this one and we'll close it down and I'll annouce the result first thing tomorrow morning - so any votes get them in today... could this be the tie Current Team so desperately need?

To that end about time I did. ... hmmm do you ever think you are swimming against the tide? That your view of art and artists is a little out of step. Here, much as I love Dom Reardon's art Simon Harrison's quality was so fresh and innovative that I can't look too far beyond him, its just the scale of the margin that's in debate. I think give just how bold Simon's art is I have to be bold with my vote, but I can't ignore how much I love Dom's work so I guess that leaves me:

Dom Reardon 1 : Simon Harrison 4

Patrick Goddard is an under-rated genius in my eyes. His art is so 2000ad, tight and nimble, yet with a rugged strength. Clean and sharp, yet with a grit that feels so grounded and real. He might have only got to the second round of the Current tourney, but I think his art is long overdue reappraisal. Kev Walker didn’t get out the first round of the Classic tourney BUT he drew Mike McMahon so his form can’t be based on that. His art has developed so completely across this long time under Tharg’s wing that in some ways he’s hard to pin down. Do you love his close, precious inks when he started, his bright, tidy painted work in ABCs, or his clinical high contrast later work? Or does his simple variety ring your bells?

Time for you to decide your favourite as the droids square up to the tee…

Remember for this tourney you have 5 votes to distribute as you please between these two artists, whole numbers only. So you can vote 5 - 0; 4 - 1; or 3 - 2; either way depending on how much more you like one artist's work over the other.

If you can’t be doing with that just name your favourite - remember bold tags, or other ways of highlighting always appreciated - and I’ll give them 3 votes and nowt to the other droid.

Three day votes, so this one ends morning of Monday 17th May

Remember we only consider work for Tharg in these Tourneys

What the heck is all this about - well we have a thread for that

How does this new voting work? Look here and why again?

I don’t understand how this works, what are the rules of the Ryder Cup - yep got ya covered there too

Anything else just ask and I’ll make something up. Most importantly have fun!

VOTING CLOSED

And the crowd goes wild. Like a baying mob of US golf fans chanting USA, USA, USA the fans of the Classic Team smell blood and buoyed by their victory lose all quality and a guttal roar of MASSIMO, MASSIMO, MASSIMO starts to raise... quietly near by the dignity and pride of the classy Brendan McCarthy fans shines through as they watch sadned, amazed by the scale of the defeat yet not broken... what... what do you mean I need to make these summaries less personal and expose less of my biase... I have no idea what your talking about.... okay look Massimo Belardinelli tonked Brendan McCarthy will that do?

Current Team 1 : Classic Team 6

Current Team 277 : Classic Team 438

There's a Dept. of Monsterology prologue in Meg 341. Shurely if it's in Tharg's backup organ, it counts.

Arh well yes stuff in the Meg (and sister publications - you decide) do count - so excuse my ignorance and carry on..

7
I can't consider Dept. of Monsterology in this?

You can of course consider it AND THEN REJECT IT ENTIRELY... ahem... only work for Tharg - so no lovely Batman (well Detective Comics) covers either ... not that I'd know if you did... or would I...

If anyone is debating whether to get anything off kev Levell don't. I order Volume 3 of the Megazine and they arrived basically armour plated!

Wonderful copies to in lovely condition - all gifts etc there and in fact some still sealed in whatever bag they came in. Good prices, great comics, rock hard packaging - who could ask for more.

Thanks Kev.

Bank Holidays do knock things out in that given week but I'd suggest normally that should be straight by now (having no idea about what's going on in the back ground).

Number of folks posting in the review threads suggest there isn't a wide spread problem? Are you just missing this weeks or is it also previous ones still outstanding?

You are right, I am a magnificent predator at the top of the food chain. Feeding on the flesh of other lesser creatures and they may have taste but that just makes them yummy for the eatin'.

Massimo Belardinelli 0

Colin is cancelled.

My views of Massimo are well rehearsed.

There are bits of his work I adore. Those early Dan Dares, ACE Trucking, Blackhawk black hole madness, most of Meltdown Man ... and in Meltdown Man we see the problems exposed fully. Glorious landscapes, the Yujees are majestic, but the minute Nick Stone turns up its so awkward and stiff. The main bloody character. Don't starte me in his Slaine!

He is the very definition of needing a strip to suit his style and abilities. Brendan McCarthy does things as wonderful as early Dan Dare, Blackhawk Black hole madness BUT he does everything else as well and so on that basis I had to give him the clean sweep as there's not a strip done by Massimo that I don't think would be elevated if it was done by Brendan M...

... there I've said it again and I take all slings and arrows coming my way!

Oh and I don't think it will make a jot of difference to how Massimo sweeps this one!

Last day for this vote. This is very possibly the type of tie that Current Team need to grab if it was to make any impression on this tournament - but the honest truth is after a tight start it looks like this will be another comfortable win for the classics.

Time then for me to throw my oar in. I've long said I've struggled with elements of Massimo's art. His raw creativity and imagination is quite a thing to behold. That said so is Brendan McCarthy, and it more than matches Massimo on that score. He masters other elements as well though. His Dredd is musclar, strong and full of motion. He can draw Zaucer (and Swiftie's) drab and urban home world as well as the fantasy lands they travel to. He does it all with such wonder and so for me that ability to do everything and anything makes this one easy for me.

Brendan McCarthy 5 : Massimo Belardinelli 0

Now get your votes in now!

I asked the question in the result I annouced today where will Current Team find it victories, well maybe it needs to be ties like this?

Both these artists went out in the first round of their respective tournaments - which really surprised me. Both started around the same time. Jock though burnt so bright before we knew it he was off to America and became quite the star there. We were lucky enough to keep PJ though and we’ve seen him get better and better before our eyes, so much so he’s the co-creator of one of the comics biggest hit characters of the last couple of years, while still forging an impressive career elsewhere.

But remember folks it doesn’t matter how much you loved Stingbags or the cover of Detective 881 we only deal in the realm of Tharg here.

Time for you to decide your favourite as the droids square up to the tee…

VOTING CLOSED

There seems to be no stopping relentless march of the Classic Arts. Their winning was pretty pedictable you could say, but the relentless march of these early rounds is even stronger than I'd expected. Mark Harrison was running Ron Smith close at times, but a strong closing meant the result pushed further in favour of the master of Mega City One.

The question now is where can the Current Team find its next win?

Current Team 1 : Classic Team 5

Current Team 241 : Classic Team 369

In 1978 things get even better

So last time we talked about the way 2000ad in 1977 (both of them) was innovative and full of powerful restless invention. As we know in 1978 things get better. Be it Starlord smashing in or Brink spinning off into space, in the gap of just 1 year, or even 1 Prog we learn again how 2000ad has never rested on it laurels. Sure it can start good but will strive to find new ways to be better.

I don't doubt I'll talk more about Brink as a story as we go on. Its not universally popular, though almost so. Those that don't like it find it too steady and stayed, dull and plodding. What they miss, to my eye, is that its grasped new ways of telling thrilling stories and elevated them to thrillpowered new highs. It might be different to the thrills old, but then the thrills of old thrived on not being like the other thrills of old too. Innovation and elevation to new and better.

Brink exemplifies that quite majestically and as such is the very definition of what makes 2000ad the Galaxy's Greatest.

Oh and then Grey Area at its best comes back a couple of weeks later, just in case we think Tharg's taking it easy...
