Good lord... are they going to print the Tornado episodes as well? That may come as a bit of a shock to a casual reader --

Apparently so. The main reason I'm getting it as I've always wanted to read those episodes. It'll certainly make it a very diverse trade. Can't wait.

Absolutely loving that dinosaur work. There's something very D'Israeli in the way its rendered. Fantastic

Well I'm watching it as its a great page and I'd love to own me some Henry Flint art. Doubt it'll stay in my limited range but heck you never know.

Good luck with the sale.

Cradlegrave is a good example, though - it's written as a self-contained whole, but it's also clearly written in episodes, with natural breaks between last panel and first panel, and menacing quasi-cliffhangers.  The pacing - a very deliberate element of that story - would surely be altered by an unbroken presentation, for whatever reason.

Now that's an interesting take. I personally think of Cradlegrave as a good example of how they removing of 'breaks' can work. I'd need to look at it again but the 'breaks' seem to be changes in scene almost and won't be too jarring.

Having said that and I'd need to look at this again the cliffhanger were Shane meets the big bad scally might actually be one that completely contradicts that. Oh well any excuse to dig it out and read it again can only be a good thing!

Other Reviews / Re: The Taxidermist

Yeah the Taxidermist stories are superb. Wagner at his best. As is Gibson and accepting the danger of derailing this thread far to early I'll just quickly add Gibson's work here is brilliant, but it is also on Samantha's strips, just different styles for different stories.

As a general rule I side with the reprint it as it was originally printed side of the argument for the reason Colin states in his wonderful blog entry.

That said as ever with these things a case by case basis needs to be considered. So I think, though I'd have to check back with a more clinical eye, my resent read of Cradlegrave marks that as a story that would work with the episode markers removed.

The other reason I could speculate that they are removed (and I am of course completely guessing here) is that graphic novels are aimed for a mainstream market. In a shop someone flicking through your product considering a purchase may well be put off doing so if they keep seeing these seemingly repetitive markings? The counter argument stands from Colin's post however so a decision needs to be made. With 'classic' reprints I'd suggest that the audience knows its buying something that was originally episodic and so won't bat an eye lid. So leave them in. With more contemporary titles they might be expecting a single story and so if the tales supports it I say remove them.

All of this is utter guess work and I brace myself to be shot down by those that actually know how these things work in reality.

Mark Gatiss and the fantastic Pete Milligan seem to have been added to the guest list (at least I hadn't noticed them before).

Also I'm personally very happy to see that Cinebooks have a table. They weren't sure whether they were coming but if they have the kinda offers on that people have suggested that they might I'll be spending a fair amount there!

Books & Comics / Re: Whats everyone reading?

Just finished the second half of Grimjack trades from IDW which is fantastic series and then read the 'Munden's Bar' trade which is a collection of short stories that appeared as a back up in 'Grimjack'. Its a fantastic collection and has a real 2000ad meets comix vibe to it. Aided by the fact that there's a brilliant Bolland short story rounding the collection off. I'd heartily recommend this book to anyone who is looking for something a little but different.

All right, now that I'm home, here's how best to read the story:

One Million # 1
Action Comics
Shadow of the Bat
Nightwing
Power of Shazam!
One Million # 2
Batman
Superman: Man of Steel
Starman
Azrael
Superman
Detective Comics
JLA
Wonder Woman
One Million # 3
Martian Manhunter*
Adventures of Superman
Resurrection Man
Flash
Superman: Man of Tomorrow
Chronos
One Million # 4
Hitman

DON'T read Green Lantern, because it spoils Starman.

*DO read Martian Manhunter; I forgot about that one.

NONE of the other titles are at all necessary.  These include Aquaman, Catwoman, Impulse, Creeper and others.  They're just "additional color."  Actually, you can probably consign Azrael to that pile.

The five I mentioned in my first post - those are utterly unnecessary and don't really bring any more to the story.

Thanks again Grant. Damnit I knew there was a reason I'd avoided this bit of Grant Morrison goodness in the past. Looks like picking up a few cheap comics may have been a false economy... still I do love me crossovers so my complaints stand on pretty lousy foundations!

Not seen this anywhere and certainly not here so its with a glad heart it would seem that Garth Ennis has said at C2E2 he has two more Battlefields stories to tell. Hopefully more after that but at least we got a couple more coming.
