Well if Week 1 was a gentle phasing in of quality from Round 1 with some pretty ropey ties, Week 2 hits us right between the eyes with the other end of things. This is the week that if I’d been feeling a little fast and loose with the draw I could have opened with. There’s some mouth watering ties and some decisions that will make your eyes water. THIS is what Round 2 is all about…

Intestinauts is a fantastic little - in every way - new thrill, that kicked off in the Regened (the original FCBD Special)- but we forget when we flag strips that transferred from those sprankling new ventures into the Prog ‘proper’. I reckon it had a good chance in Round 2… until… well as they say, as we welcome the Wizard from Northampton to the tourney, Alan Moore knows the score, do you?:

You hear that, you hear it… that’s the Match of the Day theme blasting away as Gary Linekar introduces live coverage of this top draw tie. It will be cruel to lose a thrill as strong as one of these so early, but that’s the thrill of the cup :

The first of the really big, premier league thrills for me. Anderson might struggle to get to the semi’s but must have a decent chance of a Quarter Final spot? Hunted is a great new trill, but will need to pull out all the stops to progress against this giant of the Prog? :

We start as we mean to go on an early, underrated (personal opinionTM) classic - sure it's about a man whose innards were exposed but it took a weak concept to some fantastic places. It's up against an early John Smith classic, which provided some very VERY confusing stuff, but also one of the great early Smith tales in ‘Deus ex machina’. Things ain’t going to get easier:

Prog / Prog 2266 - Power Surge!
« on: 22 January, 2022, 09:04:10 PM »
Well I guess the big news this Prog is even with 'Brimful' on the inside cover Tharg still managed to squeeze in a letter's page, even if a certain S. Watson can't squeeze in a new letter.

Well ACTUALLY the big new is how chuffin' brilliant Dredd is. Niemand and Goddard deliever more breathless action as Monas' race is run. There's a fantastic dollop of set up on the final page as well. Just classic Dredd.

Proteus Vex follows hard on Dredd's heels with more mindbending world building and then some hardcore action. Superb stuff.

The Order is a mixed bag - on the main its strong stuff, but John M Burns who seems to have been able to cope with anything and everything that KeK-W has thrown at him in this series seems to have found his limit when it comes to making Sludge Gideon look good. The Cassie starts a new journey - one I think might soon coincide with the journey through the time wastes - and then we get a nice idea in the 'Reef of Lost Automata' but... well is that Walter we see? Is this going to be another excuse for needless crossovers? Let's wait and see.

Kingmaker has Crixus kick serious ass, so the baddies just throw in the next level bosses to see what they can do - the art is all very shiny but still works.

Saphir2 looks lovely but is steadfastly okay. There's some good ideas in here. I'm just not sure why I should care yet.

Good Prog with splashes of greatness.

Welcome to Round 2, week 1 . This is where things get really interesting. All the big hitters are in the draw and let me tell you there are some ties coming up that will get the hearts racing and the camera’s out for live coverage. They will cover acres of print on the back pages. There are also ties that will barely get mentioned on their local radio news summary. Week 1 however does feel a little like a warm up however. It hasn’t got any of the high profile draws I hoped it might to kick us off, but it does start to hint at what's to come…

Dan Abnett and Henry Flint - what could go wrong… well … We’ve had loads of great spin-offs from NuEarth Rogue so what could go wrong… :

We end the first week with a couple ties that remind us there is a lot of chaff still to get through, even as we run our hands through the wheat (what, huh what an awful sentence!). Mind I’m a big fan of M.A.C.H.0 a glorious early strip. Valkyries … well I’ve read it… :

News / New 2000ad Insta - Instragram is dead, long live instragram
« on: 19 January, 2022, 04:21:53 PM »
I don't use Instagram - and I could feel my flesh crawl a little when I typed 'Insta' but think this is well worth sharing here. From 2000ad's official Facebook:

Quote
Calling all Earthlets and Squaxx Dek Thargo - please follow our brand new Instagram account at instagram.com/2000ADcomic

We have some disappointing news to share with you all. Last week, the official 2000 AD Instagram account was hacked and all of our posts were deleted. After working tirelessly to regain access, we have just been informed that the account that we’ve been working on for a close to a decade has been permanently lost.  We are therefore asking you, the incredible 2000 AD community, to come together and spread the word about our brand new Instagram account at instagram.com/2000ADcomic

In return, we promise to reward you all with just as many updates, competitions and artwork for The Galaxy's Greatest Comic!

Two female lead thrills here. One very much in the early 90s mold. The other very much in the wheelhouse of Pete Milligan’s theme of identity. I know which I really enjoyed, but do you:

Neat little tie this one. Two well regarded (personal opinionTM) done and gone thrills. Both dealing with the nature of story. But which one will you be re-reading to find new meaning from:

Today brings the biggest ties of the week I’d suggest. First off a modern(ish) favourite that had a number of lead characters as it developed. Coming up against a mystery whodunnit that started life as a vehicle for two lead characters (and you could say didn’t live up to the quality of either). Which gets under your cover?

Two new entrants in the 2nd tie of the round, though you have to wonder if Killer, one of the most generic and uninspiring (personal opinionTM) ‘thrills ever would have made its way through that round if it had been drawn. It comes up against a fondly remembered thrill that if you re-read you see just how bonkers it all was. A disjointed mess or an early classic?:

To get the ball rolling we have two thrills that we’ve seen already, both having been drawn in week 4 of Round 1 funnily enough and had decent tussles with decent opponents to win through. The wonderful Max Normal bested Satanus (just wait until I rerun the 2000ad Fight tourney from Prog 2000ad - I doubt that result would be repeated) and Lilly MacKenzie came through against Tiger Sun, Dragon Moon. All of that is past us however and all that matter now is which of these tickles your thrill receptors the most:

General / Forum’s Favourite Thrill - Round two
« on: 14 January, 2022, 06:30:04 AM »
Some of this is getting covered in another thread BUT I'd typed it up in preparation so I'll post it anyway and be damned.

Well the last ties are up, all we can do now is wait for the results to come in and prepare for Round 2 to start. Round 1 was a frankly brutal and bruising 87 ties, took 12 weeks (with a week off for X-mas) - as long as some of our shorter tourneys in total.

Round 2 is going to make that look like it was nursery slopes as it's actually bigger - gulp.

There are 256 Thrills - 87 Round 1 winners and 149 Thrills that got a bye in that round, 90 as they are Premier League Thrills and 59 by luck of the draw.

Meaning 128 ties.

I estimate with a fair wind behind us that it will take us 16 weeks and we’ll be done… that should take us into early Mayish if we start now…

…but that would be ridiculous right… I mean starting now, that would be madness. We all need a break from this nonsense…

See you Monday.
