Games / Re: The Board Game Thread
« on: 06 December, 2021, 09:18:59 PM »
Couple of new board games brought for the boy child this birthday and both a triumph.

Firstly 'Scotland Yard' from Ravenburger. I mean this is a well known game (I guess) seen it advertised on the telly and everything, but never actually played it. Its immense fun and really effective in creating drama and tension from a pretty simple game mechanic.

Secondly Talisman - Legendary Tales despite the boy liking Talisman on the Switch we decided to go for this striped down verison physically as its simpler and fit better into our available playing time. Very glad we did, as I say striped down, but its a very different beast. Fast moving and really fun with a nice fresh nechanic that keeps things moving and simulates the growth in the original, though with a nice way to mean as you get better the game gets harder. Only draw back quite a bit of set up, but once you are in this one seems great fun.

Despite Carlos drawing many (most? all?) of the Tharg tales, I don't think I can recall a single storyline or panel.

There was some lovely work by others, inparticular Eric bradbury springs to my mind.

Richard Osman has a quiz show podcast The Birthday Game were 3 celebrities try to guess the age of a famous person who's birthday is that week

Heard this on the Radio 4 comedy slot and its strangely compelling and fun for sonething that sounds really simple and limited! How it works outside House of Games as a show on its own I'll never know, yet it does!

So we’re well into the second half of the 1st Round and stats fans this week sees us cover 14.2% - 16.3% of the tourney over all… oh gosh… I wish I hadn’t typed that… I’m sorry...

HOLD ON, HOLD ON, you’ve had to put through Time Flies and the rebooted Harlem Heroes, amongst other horrible thrills BUT NOW one of these two has to miss out… Well at least the BBC cameras will be there to cover this, one of the red hot draws of the 1st Round.

Which most rattles your thrill-receptors:

Armoured Gideon - more info

Vs.

Stone Island - more info

Just reply in this thread naming your favourite thrill of these two series at the beginning of your post (or use Bold tags so I can spot it easily) and say what you like about these wonderful stories after that.

Match ends early on the morning of Thursday 9th December and the winner gets a place in Round 2 (of 9!!!).

What on Earth is ALL of this?

For those that need ‘um and can be bothered to follow ‘um there’s some simple rules

Any questions, just ask as ever - and have FUN!

Fascinating one this - just how do you judge those Tharg the Mighty stories then - this is the actually strips named Tharg the Mighty - such great artists have done them, the idea was such fun and felt ‘important' as a kid as it gave you a twisted peak behind the scenes…. But sometimes they’re so god awful to actually read! Mind Universal Solider (we’re not including Kelly’s Eye story that span off here, that stands on its own) was a little all over the place too! I guess it comes down to...

Books & Comics / Re: Whats everyone reading?

is the Asterix hachette english collection still happening ?

Oh I gave up hope on that some time ago. Haven't heard anything new for ... years... it was first floated before the pandemic wasn't it?

but this is madness. i am pretty sure, at this point, that i must have been getting my own bespoke version of the prog for the last four decades.

Arh but you are the lone(ish) voice for so much and that's really cool. At some point when I have some time on my hands* I'll run some stats to see how often you went for the losing vote. As I always say the fact that 2000ad attracts such a broadchurch of fans is one of the things that makes it such fun. That you seem to be an outlier - at least in these early rounds - just illustrates that perfectly.

*meaning I'll never get around to it as I'm far to lazy, but the thought is there huh!

Film & TV / Re: Wheel Of Time.....

Watched episode 5 last night and its still solidly entertaining. Not blowing me away but there's always very good bits. The villains of the piece (well since the Stupid Stupid Rat Creatures have seemingly disappeared) The Light are utterly cliche and with it utterly effective and that torture / who gets to die piece was genuinely tense.

The Orge thing was kinda cool. I like the way it drops in more fantasy bits quietly without too much fuss and without over doing its. Characters are coming on nicely and there are enough plot threads to keep things moving on at a brisk pace.

So yeah a continues to be a fun distractions and its ace looking forward to new telly week to week again. Seems to happen so rarely these days.

Tell you want half watching this is the way to go. Family watched episode 4, I stayed in the room and half watched and it was entirely entertaining, while I was entirely not engrossed! The ending was dead good in that context too.

So my advice is half watch the thing while doing a jigsaw (or similar) - works a treat!

Given how quickly Sheridan got this together we've had some LOVELY stuff as exemplified by Pete 'lovely' Well's fantastic story - dare you to use that in class - and Jim's wonderful sound effect. Hope you have a quiet month Jim so we get more of these. I love a good sound effect. Do less exercise or summit!

VOTING CLOSED

Closer this one, but still pretty early on one tale took a confident lead and the other was just pecking away behind, never really launching a serious attack, but never falling entirely away. The final outcome won't leave anyone speechless... ready for it... unlike

Bob Byrne's Twisted Tales

which silently stalks into Round 2.

See you tomorrow...

VOTING CLOSED

Never think it will be a shut out until The Mind of Wolfie Smith has spoken, and he wasn't the only one. Looked once again like a white wash and in the end it was just a near white wash for

Bendatti Vendetta

as it shots in Round 2.

Prog / Re: Prog 2260 - Judge Klegg Superstar
« on: 04 December, 2021, 08:14:35 AM »
Just to say, my sub prog runs around two weeks late. I get the "Saturday" issue normally on the Thursday or Friday of the following week, ie 12 or 13 days after most here.

And that's regularly. Man that's harsh.

Get ya votes in today and I'll count up in the morning. I'mn beginning to worry about how many times I'm going to have to type this type of thing!
