A major part of the strip's appeal (to me) is its ridiculousness. Practicality no doubt trumps ingenuity but the 2012 movie's downplaying the strip's ridiculousness was (I think) the main reason I didn't warm to it on first viewing.

That's the key, a lot of stuff looks cool in the comic but doesn't translate well to live action.
