And Prog 239 has what might well be my favourite every 2000ad cover.

Rich Johnson has lifted our thread over at Bleeding Cool!

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2010/09/16/when-americans-draw-dredd/

Well to be fair he's added a few I've not spotted here (though that might be me) and missed a few too.

Books & Comics / Re: Book problem?

If you have got books your local library is a brilliant place to send them (or College but that's personal bias coming even more to the fore!). With the times that are coming up this kind of gesture will help keep them vital and valuable places to people that need them most.

Clearly they won't be able to offer you any reward, aside from the warm glow that comes from doing a good thing!

To use an Americanism Judge Dredd seems to be gaining some 'heat' in America. Is the current push going to be the one that does it?

Nice review. If you watch that, didn't know the character and don't go out and get something you'll never get on board!

Other Reviews / Detonator X

You know what I didn't hate this.

This strip seems to get a hard time and I can kinda see why, but I quite enjoyed it. Its a bit like 'Legend of Shamana' in that its faults are there for all to see and yet somehow I found it very readable. I think its biggest problem, well there's actually two of them.  Firstly the characters fall a bit flat. I don't particularly like the good guys and I don't really hate the bad guys. Everyone is just kinda there and doing their thing which reduces a tension a heap.

Secondly its like there were a gazillion ideas floating around in Ian Edginton's head and he couldn't quite filter them down so he threw them all in and it made it a bit of a jumble with plot holes you could pass... well Detonator X through.

And yet it was good fun. Steve Yeowell art, even when coloured goes a long way to making anything better and more enjoyable.

A giant jumbled ballista of ideas.

Creative Common / Re: Reading list for artists please add

There are a couple of other Scott McCloud books worth checking out. 'Reinventing Comics' and particularly 'Making Comics'. Another Eisner classic, 'Graphic Storytelling and Visual Narrative'.

Also 'How to draw comics the Marvel way' by Stan Lee and John Buscema is great even if you don't want to draw comics the marvel way.

All pretty much widely available.

Best so far. Blooming heck this stuff is fun right out of the old school...

... so nothing new to say then here but since I read 'Double Yellow' last night in one go and enjoyed it so much, thought I might as well share.

Wasn't Alan Davis first choice to do Dredd + Batman? Or an earlier incarnation there of? Thats something I'd have loved to have seen.

Books & Comics / Re: IS IT WORTH....
15 September, 2010, 03:07:50 PM
Absolutely. Assuming you're not going to get the back progs. They all have something to offer. 'Kingdom' I'd suggest as the quintessential 2000ad thrill. Not my personal favourite, though I do love it, but there's something so very 2000ad about it.

Since you've mentioned it 'Lobster Random' is a personal fav of mine and is brillant mind bending stuff.

Mongoose are selling stuff cheap why not check out 'Devlin Waugh' by my fav 2000ad writer (probably) John Smith.

Or if you're looking for an old skool thrill then 'Flesh' is just wonderful and my favourite of the early days (though remember it is 30+ years old).

Or possibly the best strip in 2000ad Nikolai Dante is there for the taking in trade (get volume 3 asap as its hard to find but is in the 2000ad shop now). There's a lot of it but its so very worth it.

I could go on but I'll stop there. Defo try something else though, defo.

Over at Bleeding Cool there's an article about the early pre-sales of 'Dredd' and how positive they are. Good news.

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2010/09/14/new-judge-dredd-film-already-doing-well-in-pre-sales/

Should explain this might have been posted in the other thread but I've taken to avoiding that as I'm trying to avoid spoilers.

Personally I'm waiting for them to collect the more recent Megazine stuff (not being a Meg reader and all). In particular the Dave Taylor stuff... I got quite a wait ahead of me I suspect!
