I'd like to apologise for the shocking spelling and whatnot in my earlier post.

As good as Weaveworld is, it's wonders have not melted my bran to the point that I can no longer type, but rather my keyboard is playing silly beggars. Again. Only registering half of my keystrokes.

Took me almost 10 minutes to type this. Nightmare.

I mean come on! wasabsoluey! What's all that about?

Film & TV / Re: Last movie watched...

Sherlock Holmes Faces Death.

Only vaguely acquainted with Rathbones Holmes (I'm a Brett man myself) but saw a boxset of all the films cheap in HMV and couldn't resist.

'...Faces Death' is not a great film but has a distinct advantage over it's two predescessors in that it is an actual mystery story rather than than slightly ridiculous Holmes Vs Nazi bobbins.

Rathbone is as good as he's cracked up to be and even comedy Watson has failed to piss me off just yet but I'm told he becomes even more of a cartoon as the series develops so that may change.

The commentary tracks on these films, by Holmes/Doyle experts, are a bit dry and are obviously prepared speeches being read verbatim rather than spontaneous observations or even semi-spontaneous with notes. As a newbie to the series they are telling me facinating stuff I don't know but it's just a shame they don't sound as interesting as they actually are, if that makes sense. They're sometimes a little hard to stay focused on.

Will be rationing the rest of the series. As good as some of the films (and Rathbone) are, this isn't really a 'marathon session' boxset.

Megazine / Re: In Praise of The Floppies

A mark of just how numbed my mind has become by the mind numbing tedium of my current surroundings is that not only did I not realise the inherent innuendo in my choice of phrase, I still didn't immediately see it when it was pointed out.

I'm looking at the comment with a bemused "huh?" look on my face like a witless buffoon for a good couple of minutes.

Indeed. My Chopper went very odd when it got splashed. Tried drying it near a heater but it was unreadable.

Financial constraints mean that I can no longer afford to get the Meg each month but I do keep an eye out for anything in the floppies that I particularly want to read and pick up the odd issue here and there based on that.

I got the Brit Cit babes one for example, because it's Wagner Dreddverse that is unlikely to be reprinted elsewhere and I couldn't resist the Ennis Stronts.

So yeah, I'm essentially buying the floppy and getting the odd self contained Dredd  and a couple of interviews as a free gift.

Off Topic / Re: Karen Gillan

My opinion, for what it's worth.

Karen Gillan is a beautiful girl facially, but her body type doesn't really do it for me, as she's a little thin for my tastes.

As for those types of poses and wardrobe, no thanks. Sexually speaking, they leave me completely cold, whether it's Gillan or any other woman. I always find women far more attractive when they are wearing a flattering outfit than when they are half naked. I don't need to see the flesh.

My opinions on AotW are spelled out on my book blog - basically that it had it's flaws but I liked it overall. (That was a shameless plug by the way)

As for other series of late, I'm never gonna say a bad word about Sin/Dex, Dredd is at the top of it's game and Dante is fantastic, while Saline, Defoe and Strontium Dog put me in a very bad mood. So a mixed bad really, which is exactly what you'd expect from an anthology.

New boy Dandridge looks to be settling squarely into the former category, so all's well in my house. I'll not be stoping reading any time soon.

Not particulary, but I didn't dislike it enough to start a thread. But then I thought Cradlegrave was total tosh and everyone else is gay for it so maybe I've got no taste

You've got no taste!  ;)

I loved Cradlegrave, just like most everyone else when it first ran but I'd be lying if I didn't admit that that may have been down to getting caught up in the hype and overall praise. A recent re-read of it left me a wee bit dissapointed. I didn't hate it, as such, but it definitely seemed like it wasn't as good as I remembered it. Oh well.

I think The Adventurer and I may have been seperated at birth. Never agreed more with a post.

Apart from liking Shakara of course. Fell at the last hurdle with that one.

Prog / Re: Prog 1713 - Watt on Earth?

I'm not sure what you mean by this one being offensive because you grew up with Doctor Who. There was zero malice aimed at the show.

In fact, I dare say it was the opposite and that there was an awful lot of affection poured into it. You don't/can't write a story as referential as that one is without a pretty deep understanding of the source material;the kind of understanding that comes from loving and watching the show. Someone who's never seen it or didn't like it wouldn't have the knowledge to write this story.

I love Doctor Who and I really enjoyed this story. Art wasn't the greatest though, but that's just me.

Fave of the week is Sin/Dex, as it usually is when they appear, with Dandridge impressing as well.

Liked but didn't love the Terror Tale, although the art was lovely.

Not really much to say about Slaine. Once again, while I didn't particularly like it I also didn't hate it(unusual for a Slaine story). Then again, I said that about the beginning of the last story and that one managed to lose me completely again with it's final part so...

All told, another pretty strong prog for me.

Just picked up issue 4. The Stewart Lee/Steve Yeowell thing was very good I thought. Not read anything else yet.

Off Topic / Re: Got Snow?
02 December, 2010, 09:47:12 PM
Yesterday I walked into town and a journey that normally takes 25 minutres took almost an hour. Snow halfway to my knees. Not too bad but I got the bus back once the roads had been gritted.

Today I got a lift down into town but had to walk back up because the buses had stopped running. Slightly more winding route, to take in the newsies (Clint is out) meant that the journey shuld have taken about 45 minutes. It took over 2 hours, wading through drifts above my knees and at one point walking into (and toppling over) a roadside barrier that was completely covered. I knew it was there somewhere, but wasn't sure quite where.

I'm not a huge fan of snow. I've gotta go back down tomorrow as well. My legs are killing me.

You don't get impulse buying/new readers via subscriptions.

Less people buying issues in shops means less issues being stocked which means less chance of new readers.

This is pretty much my thinking exactly, although if I'd had to explain it myself I would have made it run to 27 paragraphs.

I get mine from a local newsagent. Which is the kind of place I stmbled onto 2000ad and imagine many others would too. Comic shops are a different kettle of fish, seeing as how you would think that anyone spending any amount of time in a comic shop is gonna be aware of 2000ad already. So having them on the shelves for people to hapen across is not so important.

I imagine when it come down to cool hard brass, the sub is better for 2k as it's a Guaranteed sale and if you pay for the year it's money in the bank,

This is no doubt true, as well as the fact that it's probably cutting out a couple of layers of middlemen but I've alway thought of it as being quite a shortsighted view to take. Subscribers are going to fall away, be it through dissatisfaction with the prog, lack of funds or even (cos we're none of us getting any younger) the old grim reaper. Who are they going to be replaced with if the prog isn't out there pulling them in?

Ee've got about 2ft on the ground (more on the sheds/roofs) and there is more coming down. Been pretty constant for the last couple of days.

Bit of a pisser because the school is closed and I'm lumbered with the bairn. He's proper doing my napper in at the moment.
