Colin YNWA

You know there's a theory that keeps going round that if you got a regular team, putting out a well crafted book, on a regular timely basis, quantity will out and that book will find an audience. People as knowledgeable as Jim Shooter say this kinda stuff, not just no nowt internet bores like myself. Well this week that theory was blown out the water in quite a spectacular fashion with Planet of the Ape 16. You damned crazy fools have allowed this magnificent book to get canceled

DAMN YOU, DAMN YOU TO HELL.

It was a bloody great book, had an astonishing creative team, that's done ever page and has come out month on month with barely a blip. Yet its not found its audience and issue 16 is the last. Bloody crazy. I'm pretty sure its canceled rather than just ended as the end feels absolutely like there was at least another 4 part story to come. All the plot lines get a kinda ending but from from a satisfying one. Its bloody criminal. This would have been a great episode, as part of an ongoing, As it stands within as the last episode it was okay at best.

Bah humbug.

Also got Jonah Hex (magnificent), Wonder Woman (great), Resident Alien (good, but glad there's more to come and while the story was contained it felt like sense setting by the end, a bit rushed too), Spaceman (saving for a complete read), Concrete 'Three Easy Piece' (fantastic).

However even picking up the first 'Red Lanterns' trade for a fiver at a local second hand shop isn't enough to make me happy. I WANT MY APES BACK... oh well new series starting soon...

Colin YNWA

Well read the Red Lanterns trade... and just can't make my mind up. It looks bloody ugly, I mean really, but that's kinda appropriate for the title. The story, not surprisingly for Milligan is really interesting, he is surely the only writer who could make a book like this work? Some said Atrocitus (apologies I can't quite remember who), the leader of the Red Lanterns, is kinda like Kano and I completely get what they mean. The think is the story felt a little flabby and directionless, like it was drowning in its own high concept and Atrocitus was the only thing really holding it together. The thing is if I see then next trade cheap I know I'll get it was I'm so intrigued. I have this feeling by the end of Milligan's run, whenever that is every thing will snap into place and it become apparent that this is a work of genius...???

... mind they still cancelled Planet of the Apes...

Yeah, that was me that made the Kano comparison, to which I'd still stick. He's a terrible, existentially-obsessed monster who you can't help but fall under the sway of. I can't really disagree re: the directionless quality, though. Wherever it's going (and it's virtually impossible to know) it's not going there at either the pace I expected nor in the direction I assumed. I was sure Milligan would have had Rankorr (the human Red Lantern, who is utterly the Danny Franks of the piece - a literate, intelligent fellow who ends up engaged in bloody conflict motivated by the death of his brother - all he needs is a bleedin' diary!) arrive on the scene much sooner, and then chart his relationship with his new, monstrous mentor. It hasn't really gone that way, instead dwelling heavily on internecine blood-letting (shades of X-Statix?), unexpected crossovers and self-reflexive delving into its own arcane continuity. I remember wondering, when this was first announced, where Milligan was going to take it all, since it seemed such a limiting mini-series-suited concept - and I still don't know where he's taking it. It remains baffling yet compelling though: I don't miss an issue, and I've ditched most of the New 52 titles now (and am, frankly, getting ready to ditch a whole lot more over at Marvel - am on a bit of a purge at present.)

The art though... appalling. Bleez in particular seems determined to strike every Liefeld-esque twisted-spine stick-her-ass-out-for-the-camera pose imaginable, all of which would, contrary to intention, struggle to raise a stiffy in a hormonely-overloaded fifteen-year old.

I thought it was you Greg, but didn't want to assign opinions to you if I wasn't sure. Its such a good comparison as I've read it today I kept coming back to it and I too thought that The Earth Red Lantern would fulfill a Danny Frank's type role. The other echos of Bad Company that rattled through my head is the way the monster has to try to hold together this group of other monsters. Yeah powerful and terrible but kept in check by fear of the bigger animal (though Red Lanterns did do some really interesting things with that). Finally the missons to vent their rage against forces even worse than them, or committing vile acts, the reader isn't meant to pretend its pleasant, but no-one is meant to they have any sympathy with the 'victims', shades of many battles with the Krool...

... the more I talk about it the more I know this is now officially going on my trade waiting list.

Do you think Milligan is doing it consciously, by which I mean Bad Company was the... well Bad Company for the 'Battle' and the British war comic generation, and Red Lantern is the Bad Company, very deliberately, for the superhero readers?

I think it's a very good question, Colin, and it is interesting to hear you drawing further parallels with Bad Company yourself. I sometimes suspect I have a tendency to see Bad Company-related motifs in Milligan's writing simply because BC is my favourite comic ever, rather than because they're actually there, so thanks for mitigating my mania. ;) As for how consciously Milligan is doing this - I would really struggle to answer that, 'cos his approach to mainstream comics remains an enigma (pun intended) to me. Is he trying to modify his style to suit what he thinks would appeal to a mainstream sensibility, but his quirks still show through, no matter how much he tries to dial them down? Is he being subversive, beneath the cloak of commercial success? Is he himself not entirely sure where he's going? Damned if I know! Best guess - I don't think he's deliberately trying to pull a Bad Company, I think it's just that you get to a certain stage as a writer when the themes that interest you most will always emerge in some form or another in anything you do. Bit like how if you told Chris Claremont to write a new script, you'd immediately get a story about mind-control (and sexual ambiguity.)

Anybody reading Dark Avengers at the moment? There's a bit of a Dredd homage going on in the most recent issue, and the suggestion that we might get more of it next time...

Not just limited to Colin or yourself Greg. Bad Comapany imeediately left to mind with the alien torturers  on the opening page of the first issue..

Both hands way up  in the stratosphere in agreeance on the art.

But he's been kicking Stevieself for leaving both Animal Man & Shade the Changing Man on the shelf at the time because neither met the high standard he's come to expect as a squaxx.  So the  art  not always being as good as the prog is something he now accepts as  part & parcel with US comics.

So no Judge Dredd: Inferno for you Adventurer?

Two fold problem.

One.I've become rather turned off on S&S trades due to crappy cover stock and *shudder* miss-matched spines in many cases.
Two. Not an Ennis fan as a rule, so I'm not running out to but it any time soon.

It'll turn up in a casefiles sooner or later, right? So I'd rather not double dip if I can help it. Especially on a story I'm not super interested in.

If it's a dose of Ennis that you're baulking at then you'll have no problems with the Grant Morrison on script duties here.

& whilst Inferno itself is casefiled that isn't the (ahem) case with Millar's prequel Purgatory, also included in this volume.

That's Purgatory Adventurer.

PURGATORY.
"We'll send all these nasty words to Aunt Jane. Don't you think that would be fun?"

The Adventurer

Good news then, I got the Purgatory floppy with Meg 322. Haven't read it yet due to Millar not ranking much higher then Ennis, especially on Dredd. But I might get to it soon.

Morrison, eh? My mistake, still not really chomping at the bit to own it stand alone. I'll get to it in Casefiles someday.

God damn it my shop got shorted on Strontium Dog: The Life and Death of god damn there are a lot of words in this title... and Absalom wasn't even on the shipping manifest for this week.

NEW COMICS SHIPPING THE WEEK OF 08-08-12

My Pulls
CARDBOARD GN - New Doug Tennapel book! That's all I need to know.
FAIREST #6 - I'm not actually sure I like what Willingham has done with Lumi the Snow Queen, but it sure does look good with Jimenez on art.
GOLD DIGGER #140 - I think my experment to try this series is a resounding flop. This is series is just not for me. Which is sad, because its core concept and characters seem like they could be fun. If it wasn't completely bogged down with geeky pop-culture references. Which is fine in moderation, but not when you actually rip off characters to add to your supporting cast. Which is what this series seems to do regularly.
LEGION LOST #12 - Still an entertaining if flawed series. I'm digging Tom DeFalco on writing.
PUNK ROCK JESUS #2 - I have mixed feelings about this series. On one hand Sean Murphy is a phenomena artist, and I'm really loving this series black & white style. I do feel its taking some really easy shots at corporations, religion, and reality TV viewers. Which is unfortunate because you can do interesting things with those things.
RESURRECTION MAN #12 - Really pissed off that this got cancelled. But I'm with it too the end.
SCOTT PILGRIM COLOR HARDCOVER, VOL. 1: PRECIOUS LITTLE LIFE - I never bought this series when it was coming out in paperback, I wasn't interested until I saw the movie. But I do love HCs, so this new edition of the series is perfect for me.
THE MASSIVE #3 - Really liking this series.

I'll be chancing my arm on the first Moebius/Jodorowsky collaboration Eyes of the Cat and Thor: Unkillable Thunder Christ from Moonstone this week.

Colin YNWA

Did no one check out 'Think Tank' from Top Cow? It sounded interesting but as it was scheduled as only a 4 issue mini I gave it a pass. It would seem that will now not be the case and it will in fact be a lot longer, possibly ongoing and so my interest has returned.

Anyone try it?
