: Fleetway Files - The next step for Hibernia Comics
: Colin YNWA 27 November, 2020, 08:54:44 AM
I'm indecently excited about this. Over on Facebook David McDonald of Hibernia Comics has annouced 'The Fleetway Files'.

The Fleetway Files is a new series from Hibernia in association with The Treasury of British comic which aims to present the very best of Fleetway comics and build it into a great library collection.
The collections will be numbered  have a similar trade dress, and for all you spine fans, there will be consistency!

'The Angry Planet' will be the first in the Fleetway Files series, with the 'Indestructible Man' by Jesus Blasco following up in the new year, and all releases after will continue the numbering.

If there is any requests for future collections I'd love to hear your suggestions!

Preferably the stories will be self contained and under 100 pages, although we are open to spreading over two volumes.

Get your suggestions in - I know many have already. Masive congratutions to David and I think credit to Rebellion for recognising the magnificent work he has done keeping the interest in British comics arhieve alive for so long while few others where.

Gosh, I don't know nearly enough about non-2000AD comics to make suggestions, but dead excited to get an Angry Planet collection. I'm bracing myself for it to be not-amazing, but with the pedigree of the Meltdown Man creative team I've long wanted to read it! Just not enough to try to put together a collection of Tornado.

On that note, I am curious to see what early Wolfie Smith was like - is it better than the 2000AD run? (which I actually like, but think could've been better)

Suggestions for future collections are very welcome! Work wrapped on Angry Planet a wee while back and it should be ready for release soon, and I'm busy processing raw scans of The Indestructible Man for David right now (must be the only comic where an immortal former captain of the Royal Cavalry under Pharaoh Rameses II takes on a robot reindeer!) so it's the perfect time to bombard him with ideas for what you'd like to see next  :D

Seconded... I loved Oink!; it was my gateway drug to Viz.   Also contained Charlie Brooker's first professional work.

Although who knows? It depends where the rights lie, but Sega has historically been quite open to licensing.

Thanks for sharing, Colin! We'd hoped to get it released sooner, but lockdown slowed things down early in the year, then the repro work turned out to be a bit more time-consuming than expected. The printers did a great job of turning the project around quickly after receiving the files though.

Looking forward to hearing what everyone thinks of this one - Tornado's printing and paper stock was a tough beast to deal with and I hope we've done Massimo's art justice in the processing and clean-up!

Well, mine is ordered and despite having all of Tornado upstairs in a box, I couldnt turn down the chance to a) have all of Angry Planet on the shelf between two covers and b) support one of my favourite smaller publishers.

Besides, i want to get on your good side so you will perhaps think of me favourably when i start bombarding you with pleas to reprint all of Rat Trap.

Coming soon is a collection of “The Indestructible Man” from 1960s comic JAG, drawn by Jesus Blasco (perhaps best known for his work on “The Steel Claw” for Valiant), and Hibernia have kindly shared this advance Work in Progress cover, to give us an early hint of how the series will continue.

Never heard of it but I'll be giving it a go that's for sure - like the cover image.

Its interesting maybe this line is why we aren't getting stuf from the Treasury used for the floppie. Its turned out there's plenty of commercial value in them. Which is great news - if not for the floppie.

This would be excellent and I’d definitely buy but I think the rights would be prohibitively expensive, at least for such a small enterprise.

I imagine Panini have the rights to the strips as they bought out Marvel UK while it was still publishing the poster magazines (and promptly shut it all down). Whether they'd be interested in licensing a Blakes 7 volume is another matter, but it would probably need the approval of Blakes 7 Media and possibly also the BBC.

Going by the cover of the Tom Patterson Collection, we're getting some "Jake's 7" (from Jackpot, I seem to remember), so Rebellion are heading in the right direction...

Blakes 7 would be a bit out of my comfort Zone tbh, I would imagine two sets of rights would have to be navigated, those that own the strips and those that own the IP.
I have another four collections agreed with Rebellion, more info on those later in the year!

The Soul Sisters!
Dead Man Walking!
Together at last in one mighty volume!
I expected the press release back on the first of April, to be honest...

Yeah another vote for Dead Man Walking here. I mean sure it's not perfect and the future swearing - and folks shouting BITCH so much is annoying, but you now what it's an exciting thrill. Toying with B-movie cliche playfully.

Not a collection of strips, but I should have mentioned the "Blake's 7 1982 Fannual" project (Here (https://www.facebook.com/groups/149799069818923)).  It's already got a strip in it (by Nigel Auchterlounie) and perhaps there will be another.  It's also going to contain an interview with Ian Kennedy regarding the strip.

A guide to every one of the Marvel strips can be found here: B7 Comic guide (https://andreworton.wordpress.com/2016/11/01/a-guide-to-the-blakes-7-comics/), including a panel of art from each strip.  There is one joke entry, "Mutoid".  As it is fictitious, there is no art to showcase.

There are two hoax entries - the other is 'Liberation'. Neither of those specials had a comic strip in them.

It also makes the questionable assertion that the deeply ordinary Martin Geraghty is a better artist than Ian Kennedy.

Any chance one of these upcoming projects may be BLOODFANG, from the Eagle? The second series, especially, sounds almost too right-up-our-alley to be true.

From Wikipedia:

"In the second series (30 episodes, 90 pages) time-travellers from 2150, hunting dinosaurs for meat with which to feed the people of the 22nd century, attack Bloodfang's pack. Bloodfang fights back, but is eventually captured, brought to 2150 and kept in a zoo. Escaping, he goes on a rampage, killing many humans, until he returns to his own time.

Carlos Cruz illustrated the first 22 episodes, and Vanyo the remaining eight."

Written by Mr John Wagner too.

How about compilations of two or three short series from Crisis and Revolver that would be unlikely to make it into reprint on their own? A collection including Morrison and Millar stuff like The New Adventures of Hitler and Insiders could be quite commercial, though Straightgate and Rogan Gosh would also be nice.

Isn't Doomlord tied up in "who owns the rights" hell?

Yeah I think so. I read / got told recently - I assume there's an article about it on downthetubes or similar - that John Wagner and Alan Grant sent a letter to Dan Dare Corporation, who believed they owned the rights via 80s Eagle that they didn't believe they (Wagner and Grant) had transfered the rights (or something similar) and they wanted to make sure DDC didn't profit from or use their property. This wasn't disputed but alas John Wagner went on to say it was far to much hassle to actually prove ownership so that they could do something with the character.

So for the time being at least seems that one is in a bit of a pickle and ain't going anywhere.

Bloodfang would be brilliant - I love the first Wagner/Grant/Baikie strip, and I'm fond of the second, Flesh-like followup - but that's still with the DDC and not one of the four titles agreed with Rebellion. Maybe one day!

re: Doomlord. I don't think it would be talking out of turn to say that we've tried to do more DL over the years but it just hasn't been possible. The link Joe put up was to a cover rough I did years ago when we were hoping to put out a follow-up to the Deathlords collection. Hopefully one day we'll see more Doomlord back in print - it certainly deserves to be!
