A thread for people who have read the books. I think in the interest of spoiler prevention, anything that hasn't been revealed at this point in the show should still be spoilered. There are people who are just trailing behind the show with their book reading, so I wouldn't want anything spoiled for them. At the same time, there are parts of the earlier books the show hasn't covered YET, but could still bring them in later, maybe using different characters.
I want to talk about some theories regarding the parentage of Jon Snow. This is based on speculation from the facts revealed in the first 3 books alone, so if you haven't read them, don't read this. Again this is just speculation, there isn't any confirmation of any sort.
Various characters hear various reports about who Jon Snow's mother is, and they're all contradictory and inconclusive. It has been suggested that Jon Snow's mother is actually Ned Stark's dead sister, and Ned isn't the father at all, the Dragon Prince is. That makes Jon Snow half Targaryen and one of the possible Three Heads of the Dragon. The evidence comes from Ned finding his sister lying dead in a "bed of blood", but we never find out exactly how she died. Was it in child birth? Did Ned claim the child as his own bastard, to protect his nephew from Robert who swore to kill every Targaryen he could find?
There's also the Tyrion Targaryen theory, but that doesn't hold much water with me.

Games / Free Game Recommendations

The internet is full of free games. Some are fun, others...not so much. There's quite a lot of them, so I thought it would be good to have a thread where you could recommend the good ones.
Here's some I have enjoyed:
The Stanley Parable
I mentioned this on the 'last game played..' thread. It's a Half-Life 2 Mod and I can not recommend it enough. You'll get the most out of it if you go in completely ignorant of what it's all about. You should probably try it a few times to get the most out of it. It focuses more on story than action. I believe if you're using a Mac, you'll need half-life installed, otherwise it should be fine.
Gravity Bone
Again, best to go into this completely blind. Absolutely charming little game, a very satisfying experience. You find similar games in the link above.
Evolands
This was made for a 24 hour challenge. It's a tribute to RPGs over the years, you start of in a limited black and white RPG, and instead of gather XP or items, you get upgrades to the game's interface/graphics. You get a strangely satisfying feeling when you read: CONGRATULATIONS, YOU HAVE UNLOCKED 256 COLORS!
Four Second Frenzy
A very silly series of 4 second minigames. Hugely addictive. You'll keep telling yourself 'Sure, I'll try another, it's only 4 seconds' and before you know it, it's silly o'clock in the morning.
Crosswords
Not strictly an internet game. You can find these for free in most newspapers that have been left on public transport.
Also, as far as I know, most MMORPGS (that aren't WoW) are free to play now.
EDIT: I have no idea why the last few lines are underlined. That's the vagaries of technology for you, I suppose.

For me, it has to be the granny smith. The crunching/snapping (snuching?crapping?) sound when you take your first bite is one of the most satisfying sounds outside of music. Not a fan of golden delicious though. Too mushy and soft.
Also, if there's a doctor in the house, could they explain why they find people who eat apples on a daily basis so repellent?

Suggestions / The 2000AD Comic Olympics......Comlypics?

I've had an idea. The Olympics start on the 25th of July and end on the 12th August. Could we have a comic competition?
The game is simple. You have the duration of the Olympic Games to produce a (minimum) 8 panel comic, either by yourself or through collaboration.
If enough people were interested I would organize it thusly:
1) The theme would be nationalities. Everyone (or every team) chooses a country* and has to create a comic based on that country. Either the protagonaist or the setting or the general mythology of the story has to be related to the chosen country.
2)A new thread would start on the 25th of July, allowing people to post their entries
3)The thread will be closed on the 12th of August
4) 'Gold', 'Silver' and 'Bronze' 'medals', would be awarded to the entrants, along with an 'Eddie the Eagle Award' for best enthusiastic amateur.
5)Everyone goes back to their normal lives, completely unharmed by the experience.
6)This will not cost the tax payer a single penny
7)Performance enhancing drugs will be allowed
*Or if anyone can suggest an appropriate method, countries will be assigned via a lottery. Otherwise it'll just be first come first serve.

General / Which Artist Should Kill Judge Dredd?

There's already a thread discussing how Dredd will die, but this is not what this thread is about.
It's obvious that Wagner is the only writer whom we will permit to kill Joe, but who do you think could draw his death?
For me, the obvious answer would be Carlos or McMahon. I shouldn't need to explain those choices. Carlos designed him and McMahon drew him in his first published strip.If either of them drew Dredd's final outing, it would be like....I dunno...circular?
And out of those two, I would prefer McMahon. His style has developed incalculably, the contrast between his work on both the first and last Dredd strip would be interesting.

I thought I'd start gamer nostalgia thread. I'm going to throw out some old, obscure titles I enjoyed back in the day. What games do you think have been overlooked?
In another thread I admitted to getting The Secret of Monkey IslandTM and it made me realize that the 'point and click adventure' has all but disappeared. Tablet devices could be their redemption. I loved all of Lucasarts old PaCs. The Dig, Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle. There were some cracking Indiana Jones Adventures. You can play most of these by visiting here.
But the PaC I remember the most is Kingdom O' Magic. John Sessions did voice acting for it. It was a spoof of Tolkien Mythology and it was great fun.
And Descent. That game where you flew a wee spaceship 'round a mine and blew shit up. Brilliant. I'd love a crack at that again.

Help! / Strontium Dilemma

I need to get a birthday present for my best-comic-nerd-friend. He's TPB collector, and he's largely ignorant of 2000AD. I have been redressing this issue, with loans of Dredd Case Files, Skizz, Mega-City Undercover, and previous gifts of Buttonman and Leviathon.
He's never read any Strontium Dog.
I Suck at google and was unable to find out which volumes of the Agency Files contained which Stories.
I don't want to introduce him to RAGE before he understood how important Wulf is, but, I kind of want to introduce him to Durham Red with the 'Bitch' Storyline.

In short, I'd like to know, which TPB would you recommend for someone who's unfamiliar with Johnny Alpha?

Film & TV / CGI Sharks Don't Break Down

I thought I would start a thread for us to discuss the pros and cons of CGI.
The Title of this thread came from a recent pub debate about Jaws. It's a well known fact that Spielberg had all kinds of technical problems with the Eponymous Mechanical Fish. I would suggest that this situation forced Spielberg to use a bit of film-making nous to overcome these problems.
(E.g *Unnecessary Spoilers Warning for a 36 Year Old Movie* The way he used of a decapitated head to make the audience spill their popcorn. If he had had the luxury of CGI, that scene may have not have happened, as Spielberg could have chosen to wait for post-production to have a whole CGI shark shark suddenly lunge out instead. Would that be a better scene? It worked in Jurassic Park, 'Clever girl' (although he didn't deploy CGI for that scene either).
Now I'm willing to admit that when the shark is revealed, it's not entirely visually convincing, but the way the scene is composed (Roy Schneider is casually dishing out chum>the Shark pokes his head up to for a nibble>Roy Schneinder shits the bed>Roy Schneider informs Robert Shaw that 'You're gonna need a bigger boat', it draws you into the story. If he were to go back and paste a more convincing shark over the original, I think it would only serve to distract from the spot on performance.
All those points are entirely speculative of course, because computers have never been near the Original Cut. But that's kinda the point. Films don't need any CGI to be good, and a couple of recent examples that have emphasized their CGI (Green Lantern, Sucker Punch) have flopped.
Having said that, Pixar make amazing films using nothing but CGI, so what the hell do I know?
