Bah. I had big plans for this topic but I was on holiday and wanted to get home to check something in my copy of the invaluable Oxford Dictionary of Popes.

My personal favourites are the two Pope John XIVs  and the non-existent John XVI. I bet they wish they'd had wikipedia in the tenth century.
