Suggestions / Re: Re-reprint this!

I'll repeat my call for Nikolai Dante Case-files style volumes. I would buy the CRAP out of those if they appeared!
[/quote]

Yes, I'd like to see that as well.  I've never read any Nikolai Dante and I'd like to give it a go!

I'd second calls to reprint both Slaine: Time Killer & Slaine the King.  I did manage to get them recently but only after months of scouring the net.  I'd have preferred to have put some cash into Rebellion's coffers rather than having to buy them from private collectors.

Restricted Files 4 is next on the release list so that will push case files 20 back. Speaking as someone who would buy them monthly though, yes they need to pick up the pace. It's just a pity the CCF's are hitting the nadir of stories as the film hits (which might be why they have delayed it mind)

I'm sure you're right James, they probably don't want potential new readers who are intrigued by the film to pick up a graphic novel with some of the poorest tales from Dredd's history and being put off straight away.  I'm sure the rerelease of America is aimed at this audience in mind as it is regarded as one of the best Dredd tales.
Like you, I'd buy one a month but I don't mind being patient in an effort to attract a whole new wave of Dredd fans (so long as the delay doesn't become permanent)!

Just finished Clive Barker's Books of Blood vol. 1. The last story, "In the Hills, the Cities," is the stand-out. As I was reading it I was thinking how ridiculous the central concept was, but by the end it had come together in a very real and disquieting way. I keep catching myself thinking it'd almost be possible, then have to remind myself that it wouldn't, not really....

Yuh huh. That's a hell of a story that - the tone is just perfect.

But "Dread"... Oh man...

Yuh huh. Seriously good, hair raising yarn.  Anyone seen the film? I haven't and I really don't need to if I'm honest.

M.

I've seen the film, thought it was pretty decent.  A nice slow build-up and some good time spent getting to know the characters before things got horrible.  Once they did, there were some genuinely upsetting moments.  I read the books about 20 years ago so I can't remember how close to the short story it was.

I recently reread Weaveworld again and would highly recommend it to anyone.  Barker at his best!

Film Discussion / Re: Dredd - Offical Trailer
28 June, 2012, 11:08:20 PM
Ignoring the Scojo conversation... I'd like to add to the general feeling that - so far as trailers go - less is more.  When I went to see Prometheus with a group of friends, we were all pretty appalled that how much of the film had been spoiled by the trailers.  We were all unianimous that the extensive Spiderman advert was a massive mistake, and that we felt like we'd effectively seen the film.
I don't want Dredd to be ruined by following this ridiculous trend.

I wonder what hearing someone speak on slo-mo would be like?

It's heartening to see that this filthy drug will not be tolerated by our current lawmakers...

I recently re-read the S/D files 1-4 and noticed the complete change of tone also. I got the feeling that maybe they wanted to lighten the tone after the grim events of book 3.  I did enjoy some of the humour but did think the Reagan stuff was just too daft.
For my money the second book was the best, but I always suspected it would be since it featured my favourite SD tale, the epic "Outlaw!".  One of the reasons I liked that one best is that there is a good balance between the grimness and humour (as a Glaswegian I always find the Middenface stuff very funny).  The story is very strong, features great villains, and is exciting all the way through.  While there are many more SD stories that I loved, I never felt any were quite as good as that one...

Oh yes, and I've just been given a loan of the complete Y the Last Man.  Read 1st book last night, seems pretty good, intriguing so far!

Spotted it ? ::)

Hahaha!  Nicely spotted Teivion!  I never understand why they do things like that in films (well, I do, but I wish they wouldn't)...

I love all of the explanations being offered here!  My brain hurts a bit though...

Yes, I've been thinking of doing just that, but I'm such a freak about wanting full collections that I reckon I'd end up buying all three books instead of just that last one.  Given though that I've got the rest of the story in mostly signed Titan Books I'm loathe to do that.  Something's going to have to give though!

The way I'm going on, you'd think I was a teenager myself but I think I'm about the same age as you Link!

That certainly makes a lot of sense Link, I'm happy to go along with that!

Slightly off-topic, am I right in saying that there was only one more Nemesis story after "Deathbringer" (which is where I left off)?  Did you feel is was a worthy conculsion to what had been an excellent series?

They definitely referred to themselves as "the same person" in that old Nemesis & Deadlock story 'The Enigmas Variations'.
And didn't Nemesis categorically state "I am Deadlock" in Book IV?
It's always been kinda obscure to me...but they were all great stories, and some of my personal favourites.

Nemesis was always my favourite as a teenager and just dug out my books to have quick look over this...
You're spot on to say he says "I am Deadlock" in Book IV, and certainly on my first reading I took this literally as well, ie that Nemesis and Deadlock are one and the same person.  But on re-reading I think it's maybe more that their spirit became one and the same...  In the Black Hole, Deadlock does refer to having been sent my his "master" so it does suggest that - while their spirits are linked - Deadlock serves Nemesis...
I've unfortunately missed out on "The Enigmas Variations" though, so I'm not suggesting that I know better than your good self LP!

I was wondering if there was any news as to when the next volume of the complete case files is being released?  I do appreciate that I've posted this not too long after v.19's release, but in the past a certain online retailer has had the previous editions on pre-order about 6 months (and possibly longer) before release, yet there is no sign of that yet for v.20.
I'm hoping that the case files aren't being abandoned in favour of reprinting some of the epic collections, ie the recent release of The Cursed Earth & The Day the Law Died.  With the film coming out, it makes perfect sense to release collected tales such as these to introduce a new generation of readers to the world of Dredd, but I'm hoping that this will not be at the expense of those of us who have been keenly snapping up every edition of the CCF's...
Incidentally, I'd like to add that I was delighted to read the news that a new edition of America is being released, can't wait to read that and add it to my collection!

I found that confusing as well.  I came to the roughly the same conclusion as Lee, but would say that I took it to mean that Nemesis is the embodiment of Khaos while Deadlock is an agent of Khaos.  In the Black Hole story, Deadlock refers to having been sent by his "master".  When Nemesis first reassembles the ABC Warriors, he doesn't need Deadlock there because you wouldn't need the apprentice of Khaos when Nemesis is the master.  However, when it came to the Black Hole storyline, Nemesis was busy trying to find Thoth and couldn't be with the ABC Warriors, and therefore sent his agent, Deadlock.
I always wished it had been explained a little more thoroughly though!

*NB I never got to read the conclusion to Nemesis or any further ABC Warriors stories after the Black Hole (all of my collection was in the form of the old Titan books), so if my theory has been rubbished by anything explained in later stories, please accept my apologies!

I've watched the trailer umpteen times today and only just noticed that you can see someone's abdomen getting pulverised in one of the slo-mo sequences towards the end!  Curse my stupid eyes.

Quote from: The Bissler on 21 June, 2012, 01:09:54 PMbut other than that I think we are in for a more grounded and believable Dredd

Though I'm hoping it's less believable and grounded in some aspects. For example, Anderson's psychic abilities.

Yeah, I'm hoping for that as well Psycho.  I'm convinced there will be and that part of the reason Anderson is in this film (other than to give Dredd someone to interact with) is because Garland is keen to have the Dark Judges feature in a possible sequel.  By introducing the notion that Anderson is psychic in this film, it will help prepare the ground for the introduction of Death & co...
