I've never seen the boards looking like this!

I've not posted on 2000ADOnline for several years. I enjoyed it for a while, then the board went through a funny phase just as my life changed massively too, so I stopped coming here. I didn't stop reading my progs though.

Anyway, hello. I never posted much anyway, I don't think, mainly lurked, so I doubt I am remembered.

I teach English at a High School in Japan, and was wondernig, what permssion do I need to use photocopies of Halo Jones in lessons, who would I speak to to get it, and is there any likelihood of getting that permission?

I have pretty much stopped posting here 'cos it is frustrating that I get 2000AD well after the rest of you as I live in Japan.

But I had to come and tell you about this incredible site on Charley's War.

Maybe someone hsa posted it in my absence, but anyone who remembers Charlie should go here, plus there is a short interview with Pat Mills that might interest you all.

It brought back some memories I can tell you.  I've also been remembering some other old faves from Eagle and Battle - I had completely forgotten Johnny Red until today - I now remember him him having a Russian sidekick who I recall as a bit of a Wulf clone, plus strips like Doomlord from Eagle.

Okay, so we saw him lying in the snow with blood coming from his mouth, but...

Let's look at the evidence...

He turned into a bird.  We know this 'cos we see his imprint in the snow.  So, presumably he turned into a bird but too late to fly away.  However, he would surely have had time to slow himself down a little but?

He has a weapons's crest.  So if he is still alive, even a little bit, then he can start to regenerate.

Just 'cos we saw him lying there, doesn't mean he didn't get up and walk away again.

If Konstantin can live through crashing the Potemkin then Viktor can live through falling out of a window.

Is there a good reason that this board has the format that it does?

I reckon that an infopop board would be better, so that the popular threads stay at the top.

Is there some technical reason why this would be bad?

Or would it be more expensive for some obscure reason that I don't understand?

I just find the page layout a bit of a nuisance is all, and it is hard to see where the most recen posts have been.

Also, with the board as it is now, you have to open each response individually rather than just scrolling down.  Surely that creates more page views and therefore takes greater bandwidth and is therefore more expensive?

I bought a page of Nikolai Dante from "The Battleship Potemkin".  I haven't actually seen it yet 'cos it is with my folks in England, but I am proud of it anyway.  My folks say it is good.

I tried to buy some stuff from Carl Critchlow (esp. some old Thrud stuff) but unfortunately he didn't want to sell any.

I'd love to won some Bisley or Ezquerra, or even some of the comparitively more recent artists. (Flint/Irving/Burns/Siku)
 
What I would really love though is some Katsuhiro Otomo.  I believe I have mentioned before that I love the page where Tetsuo kills Yamagata in Akira.  I'd LOVE to own that.

I got my letter published a few weeks back (The short one saying Couch Potatoes was possibly the funniest ever Dredd strip), but I got no toy.

I live in Japan but gave my folks mailling address in Kent for the toy, but they got a bunch of photos instead.

Apparently the photos are pretty cool with some wicked artwork, but I WANT MY TOY *WWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH*

Plus I won't get to see them 'til my folks visit at the end of March.

Okay, big mega-epic - as normal.  (The actual epic itself is unimportant, but it must involve both Rico and Dredd)

Towards end of mega-epic - Dredd takes one in the heart and all other major organs - body is dying even with major life support.

Dredd slips in and out of Coma as Rico solves mega-epic.  Dredd says:  "Looks like I AM replaceable."

Rico goes out to finish off bad guys - gets shot in head as he wins.  Slips into coma.  Dredd gets his brain transplanted into his PERFECT CLONE BODY, that will not reject him, and continues as before.  (Except for a few interesting plot twists involving Anderson and Rico's spirit inside Dreddy's mind)

The shot in the face bit even gives him a reason to still keep the lid on, just like now due to the horrendous disfigurement to the face.

Of course, they could just grow him a clone body anyway, and forget about Rico, but I guess that would take time to create a stable clone, and time ain't on dreddy's side is it?

My favourite science fiction is
Stpehen King's "The Dark Tower" Series,
David Wingrove's "Chung Kuo" Series (This is AWESOME!)
Robin Hobb's "Liveship Traders" and, of course,
Lord of the Rings.

I guess I like epic stories.  I especially love the way that the Dark Tower also drags in so many of King's other books.

What about the rest of you?

I absolutely love Akira.  

The bit where Tetsuo kills Yamagata is up there with when Johnny Alpha says to Max Bubba "Because I hate You".  Yamagata is about to shoot Tetsuo.  On the next page, his head flips back, you see his upside down view of Kaneda and then his head explodes all over Kaneda.  Stunning.

The story and art are both absolutely incredible.  I have only read the first book so far, although I have the next two on order.  (In English and Japanese)

I haven't seen the film, but I have a republication version in Japanese - it is fully coloured and I think it might be the story as it is in the film, but I'm not sure.

I also love Lone Wolf and Cub.  Ogami Itto is one cool guy.  I've read the first ten published by Dark Horse comics, but actually find it hard to get hold of them in English 'cos I live in Japan.  I'm going to get a few more from Amazon soon.

Japanese stuff is way better than American stuff I reckon.  The only American stuff I like is Batman:  The Dark Knight Returns and a few Spiderman stories.  I thought that the Kingdom stories were very average.

Anyway, what else is good?  What do you folks like?

Who has played this game?  Who liked it?

Well a long while ago I made up some faction files for The ABC Warriors and associated characters.  (My favourite was Termight).  I also made up new graphics for a couple (Termight and The Kollege of Khaos)

The last time I did it, this website did not exist, and I could not generate much interest.  Now that this website has drawn some interest in, I am on a different computer in a different country but I feel like re-doing it.

If I were to re-write the faction files, would anyone be interested in playing with them and giving me feedback?

I guess you could do a similar thing with Mega-Cities and various other continuity arcs.

Anyone interested?  I think I am going to go and make a start on Termight again anyway for my own amusement, which is mainly a case of slightly tweaking the Hive faction and playing with graphics.

Grrrrr... I still don't have prog 2002 yet cos I live in Japan.

And that also means I can't read some of these threads cos they might ruin it.

I've begun work on a Thrud comic which I intend to self-publish next year.  Hopefully full colour  at least 22 pages and available mail order.

Having thought about the bigger picture in my last thread I wanted to think about some moments.  You know, those moments that really make a story special.  I'm going to nominate a few favourite moments, and invite you to do the same in the hope we can decide what has really made 2000AD special for the last twenty years.

My first and foremost "moment" is Max Bubba asking Johnny Alpha "Why are you doing this to me" and JA replying "Because I hate you" in Rage

Next is the Sisters of Death over Mega City One on a double page spread screaming "It will be our masterpiece...masterpiece...masterpiece...." during Necropolis

Third comes Nikolai Dante killing Konstantin.

The old veteran (name anyone? my Titan book is in England, I am in Japan) telling Halo Jones that figs don't wear earrings in HJ book3.

Final nomination for now, ND killnig the lined up prisoners in The Romanov Empire.

What do you all think?  Can anyone help refresh my memory of old stories by coming up with some really old "moments"?

Okay I'm new here, and I want to kick off a discussion of favourites.

I wanted to decide who my all-time favourite characters, writers and artists from 2000AD were so I could realy have some great disagreements with some people who were blatantly wrong.  I decided I wanted writers who could tell a long story arc, and artists who weren't NECESSARILY the best artist, but the best storyteller and characters who could sustain interest over time.
I decided that to do this I would choose my top ten favourite series and see what artists and writers came out on top.
Note - I have only included 2000AD, not other publications, not even the Megazine.  If I try and include stuff from outside 2000AD my brain is likely to melt.
I came up with:

Well, that gives me Johnny Alpha and Nikolai Dante tied for first place character.  I surprise myself by choosing Dante over Alpha and other older characters.  With JA and ND I guess I really like the way their humanity is challenged by circumstance, for example JA in Rage going after Max Bubba, ND killing Konstantin etc..  It is possible that Halo Jones has been badly served by only being in 3 books, she is well up there as fave characters go.

Wagner clearly wins as best writer for me.  Dredd, JA and Harry Ex (Harry Ex is another great challenge to a persons humanity, look how he changes over 3 books, and Dredd was at his best when having his doubts around the time of Necropolis) are all masterful creations.  Shame Pat Mills hasn't produced anything good for a few years, and I hope Morrison can produce more wonderful creations like ND.

Artist is a tie between Ezquerra and Bisley, and I can't separate them.  Both have a B&W and a colour piece in my top ten. While Bisley is clearly the superior artist, I was thinking about storytelling, and here, I think it must be agreed, Ezquerra is a master.  So, a tie it is.

So, what are your opinions?  Am I fool?  Well, no clearly I am not, but are you enough of a fool to try and disagree with me?
