Couldn't agree more re: rip-off conspiracy theorists. Like I said, there's no copyright on ideas.

Who was it said 'genius steals'? 2000 AD in its formative years did have some very obvious rip-offs but that was surely due in part to the attitude at the time being it was merely for the kids. I do think in some cases, notably MACH 1, the stories, for all their pulp sensibilities, did surpass the material which inspired them. Which, let's face it, wouldn't have been difficult if we consider just how bad something like 'The Six Million Dollar Man' actually was. Besides, it was done with such a sense of energy and fun, something I found lacking from as late as the mid-nineties onwards and which probably contributed to my no longer reading 2000 AD.

Anyway, I bet you your battered free space spinner John Probe could have that Steve Austin wuss anyday. Mate.

Hey, there's no copyright on ideas. I was merely curious as to whether or not anyone ever made mention of the similarities between the two stories.

'Flesh', as envisioned by Andy Warhol. 'A day in the life of male dinowhore'. I have some vague memory of this robot gunslinger you mention, but. . . Nope, it's gone.

Talking of rip-offs, was there ever any acknowledgment of the similarities between 'Jurassic Park' and the dinosaur theme park introduced in 'The Cursed Earth'? And what of Liam Sharpe's swiping from just about everybody?

Actually, you make a good point re: 2000 AD's policy of using foreign artists during its formative years. Also, Ian Kennedy especially is woefully neglected, in particular his work on the 1980s Pat Mills-scripted Dan Dare stories. In my heretical opinion his efforts far surpass the Frank Hampson original. Good to see Jesus Redondo and Garry Leach get favourable mentions, too.

An aside. Starlord was superior only in terms of the paper it was printed on. It too had more than its fair share of clunkers, namely 'Timequake', 'Mind Wars', et al. It's hardly surprising only 'Strontium Dog' and 'Ro-Busters' survived the merger.

I'm another disagree there.  there's something about the Dark Ages that brings out the worst in writers.  Slaine has had lots of good moments but a hell of a lot of pompous ones too.
What would be cool would be stories set in a less cliched time period like....I dunno, 1970's China or possibly Britain in the eighties........

That's probably true, actually. An episode of 'Star Trek' lasts an entire 45-minutes.

If I buy a tee shirt featuring Mr. Bolland's artwork, will he get a royalty?

Actually, I take it back. Renaissance Dan, he's the man. Except, maybe cast him as Rico and get that Schwarzenegger chap to play Joe. And, get this, DeVito's inherited all Fargo's bad genes whereas Arnolt all the good!

Ah, what the heck. For what it's worth, I'd love to see Andre Braugher in the role. Y'know, Frank Pembleton from 'Homicide: Life On The Street'. Also turned up in the latter 'Kojak' TV movies, not to mention 'Primal Fear' with Richard Gere and 'City Of Angels' with Nic Cage.
