Been sitting on this one for a while and I cannot make up my mind.
Am tempted to say Book 1 for setting uo the world so neatly, but it's surely true that subsequent books kept getting better, and while I miss Bridget Kurtis the whole idea of investigating the world from another point of view is genius, and currently playing out with great brio.

So yeah Book 3 I guess?

I mean, SkIIzz and especially SkIIIzz are the limiting factors here. I struggle to recall any redeeming features from Book III, except perhaps that robot in the car who spoke in thick Brummie dialogue, that gave me some laughs.

Book II I like well enough but not as much as any of Deadworld, really, which is just so brutal and beautiful. But does any of that match up to the glory of Skizz book I?
For me, not quite - but if Skizz has to fall, it's not unreasonable to fall here.

Anyway, Skizz.

Hah! Colin, you couldn't have engineered a more fitting squishing for DD if you'd tried. A thrill of the same vintage, so no nostlagia goggles to get in the way of the reality that Meltdown Man is hands down wittier, smarter and all around better.

Will any Round 4 ties be this easy to choose?

Angelic, Insurrection and Lawless still going strong, but those might be the only 'pure Megazine' thrills left (Anderson and Chopper are I'm sure better loved for their Prog-based outings...)

Still, Lawless has to be in with a shout of a Top 4 finish...

Weird to compare one thrill that has had consistent writer and artist and tone with another that has had at least three major incarnations. Partly because of that variety, I've got more out of Durham Red, and am generally more excited to see her back in the Prog, either with more of the same or something completely different again!

Fantasy just isn't my bag anyway, so an easy vote for Durham Red.

Matt Smith by miles, but that's also the only modern Doctor where I was actually watching the episodes. But they've all been good in the role, even if the writing has been up and down.

As sidekicks, my faves have long been Hoagy & Stogie
But as sidekicks who might star in their own spin-off, I'm voting for Purity Brown. As said, she's already had at least one crack at it with Nemesis Book VIII, and also, kinda, that book of Deadlock that is also Nemesis Book XI.
I also kinda want to see the world of Sinister Dexter from someone else's point of view, I guess Billi Octavo is the most obvious candidate?

Amazing achievement there! I confess I fell behind on reading but am loving ctaching up slowly. Sorry for leaving comments on year-old posts

The format of this blog makes me appreciate quite a bit more the choices Tharg made about what to put into the two Hachette collections - it really covers so much ground of 45 years of 2000AD and the Megazine.

The sinister vibe of The Inspectre was lovely...
but it can't touch the grubby delights of Defoe, arguably Mills's most consistently excellent thrill (The Colin McNeil series was my least favourite, but that's still miles better than the worst of Sláine, ABCs and even Nemesis...)

I got no nostalgia or especial fondness for MACH 1. I like the ongoing thread where he hates his computer and his boss, but apart from the ultraviolence the strip never did much for me.

Sancho Panzer is far from Abnett's or Flint's best work but you can bet if they tried it again now, with decades more experience, it'd be a superior beast. And it's more weird than MACH 1 which is enough to get my vote...

I admit I'm knocking Ordinary down because it wasn't, I think specifically created for the Megazine, but it WAS the best of the tales that ran in the 'also serialized in the Meg' slot.

But I don't feel too bad because Diabioliks is great on its own, and can carry the torch of Caballistics so cruelly snuffed out a couple of weeks ago.

The Diaboliks, I say.
