What's going on with Dredd's eye - misdirection, nothing, symbolism or One Eye Jack turns out to be a time displaced Dredd who lost his memory.

Really enjoying this Dredd and a big fan of Niemand’s ability to skip from lighthearted craziness to grim procedural and everything in between with his various Dredd tales. Only nitpick is how contemporary the vehicles look this week in the art.

Funny enough I had logged on to say the same thing - It looks like it's happening today.

So John Reppion says Storm Warning  set at same time as Strange and Darke and so I think this is actually in the past and 2137…

Because that is set so far - twenty years - I think we will find it's either not real or will turn out to be something where they end up traveling in time to avoid being a dark future.

It cannot be "real" because there is no chance that Dredd never encounters them again in the 'present'.

Storm Warming I just find weird because nothing in the narrative as far as I can tell needs it to be slightly in the future.

Maybe it’s covered in the story and I missed it but why is Storm Warning set three years in the future of the Dreddverse present?

Funny the things that pull you out of a story - why are Dredd and Rico say behind small wood school desks from the 1950s - if they are doing a dissertation, well they have finished at the academy - why would they then be in class later?

The Brexit stuff is fine in Dredd but I don't find as a concept Mega-City 1 as this small sad-sack place that interesting.

So we are getting a sequel to the Dredd story - A Penitent Man?

Please tell me that we haven't spent the past forty odd years following the adventures of Armin Tamzarian.

I also do not get why a child or young reader would want a Cadet Dredd story - he's simply too straight. Also the art does not work - Dredd looks like he's 50 in most of the panel.

The last panel clearly implies a motive.

He now has "the chance to make good on what he came back here to do."

So he came back from Titan to do something. Now the SJS welcome wagon is out his hear, he has the chance to do it.

He wants to serve the city and work for the city again - which is why Dredd sorts him that job at the end.

General / How do you get from Judges to Judge Dredd?
« on: 24 October, 2020, 10:17:38 AM »
So I've read all of the Judges books and I'm currently reading the Young Dredd books.

The concept is fine (the books themselves are variable in content) - My problem is that I cannot see how the Judges books would end up with the Judge Dredd world?

The basic details and references all work but as written the world of Judges is just too mundane to lead to Mega-city one and what we see in the comics. Sure you get the odd nod like psi-powers but nothing particularly weird.

They are a good look forward of the world of 2040 from the position of 2020 but I'm not convinced they fit with what Megacity one should look like in the 2080s or 2090s based on what was created in 1977.

To give a simple example, the most recent Judges book (The Patriots) is set in 2047. In theory, by 2080, not only are space colonies common but we've had enough time to fight space wars and have veterans of said wars! I cannot see that happening based on what is in the Judges books.

So you could end up with Judge Dredd but I think it would more resemble the mundane (but very good) Universe we see in the more recent Dredd film than comic Dredd.

Thoughts?

II'm particularly fond of McCarthy's flared design.

Re-reading Mega-City Zero from IDW - the single annual sets up the McCarthy Helmet as a discontinued design that was great for deflecting bullets but they hit too many citizens!

General / So did Dredd's Uniform actually change?
« on: 17 October, 2020, 08:45:19 PM »
So when Dredd first started - the Helmet was slightly different in shape and the shoulder pad was smaller and more like an actual shoulder pad than the later - over time both morph in shape (the shoulder pad gets much bigger) and I always just it down to the art style.

However... a couple of times I've seen issues with flashbacks and the Helmet and Shoulder-pads are the very 70s style.

Now that could be just a homage or do you actually think the in-universe - the uniform actually changed? If you do think it changed can you point to a specific period where you think that happened?

Can I get upgraded - I joined to talk about the weekly prog and just thought over time I'd gain the privilege to post in there?
