I also do not get why a child or young reader would want a Cadet Dredd story - he's simply too straight. Also the art does not work - Dredd looks like he's 50 in most of the panel.

The last panel clearly implies a motive.

He now has "the chance to make good on what he came back here to do."

So he came back from Titan to do something. Now the SJS welcome wagon is out his hear, he has the chance to do it.

He wants to serve the city and work for the city again - which is why Dredd sorts him that job at the end.

General / How do you get from Judges to Judge Dredd?
24 October, 2020, 10:17:38 AM
So I've read all of the Judges books and I'm currently reading the Young Dredd books.

The concept is fine (the books themselves are variable in content) - My problem is that I cannot see how the Judges books would end up with the Judge Dredd world?

The basic details and references all work but as written the world of Judges is just too mundane to lead to Mega-city one and what we see in the comics. Sure you get the odd nod like psi-powers but nothing particularly weird.

They are a good look forward of the world of 2040 from the position of 2020 but I'm not convinced they fit with what Megacity one should look like in the 2080s or 2090s based on what was created in 1977.

To give a simple example, the most recent Judges book (The Patriots) is set in 2047. In theory, by 2080, not only are space colonies common but we've had enough time to fight space wars and have veterans of said wars! I cannot see that happening based on what is in the Judges books.

So you could end up with Judge Dredd but I think it would more resemble the mundane (but very good) Universe we see in the more recent Dredd film than comic Dredd.

Thoughts?

II'm particularly fond of McCarthy's flared design.

Re-reading Mega-City Zero from IDW - the single annual sets up the McCarthy Helmet as a discontinued design that was great for deflecting bullets but they hit too many citizens!

General / So did Dredd's Uniform actually change?

So when Dredd first started - the Helmet was slightly different in shape and the shoulder pad was smaller and more like an actual shoulder pad than the later - over time both morph in shape (the shoulder pad gets much bigger) and I always just it down to the art style.

However... a couple of times I've seen issues with flashbacks and the Helmet and Shoulder-pads are the very 70s style.

Now that could be just a homage or do you actually think the in-universe - the uniform actually changed? If you do think it changed can you point to a specific period where you think that happened?

Can I get upgraded - I joined to talk about the weekly prog and just thought over time I'd gain the privilege to post in there?

Impossible to undersell the impact of the Man - for me THE Dredd artist and obviously THE SD artist -  a true comic great.

I'm going to break out some classics and my best Scotch.

General / Dredd actually being human

I was rereading Satan and I completely forgot that at the end it has a tender moment between Dredd and Anderson where he tells her he's her friend and apologies to her.

What's your favourite 'tender' Dredd moment?

You don't need any background reading for Insurrection, though Insurrection itself is background reading for another, more recent series.  But I'm not going to tell you what that series is as it's a surprise appearance ;-)

I must confess I'm puzzled by this - another megazine strip?

So I wonder if there are multiple Judge Cody's* clones out there also with naming confusing (I seem to remember an annual claiming about a third of the judges were clones)?

* I think it was Cody....

At any rate, he doesn't get much on-panel time in Judgment Day, but perhaps you're thinking of OZ.

If I was thinking of OZ, I'd mention OZ.

How did I miss first time around reading Judgement Day:

Judge Bruce is Lenny Bruce...

That Sabbat is a parody of the Dennis the Menace character Soppy Walter and even worse I missed that Dennis turns up himself!

Prog. 437's "something abnormal about norman" features Judges Amos and Andy (who seem to either be twins or clones).
