Title: Forum’s Fav Thrill - Thistlebone vs. Invasion Rd 3 Heat 48
Post by: Colin YNWA on 16 June, 2022, 06:41:37 AM
The ties in Week 6 are a bit of a mixed bag.  A couple of very interesting ones that are hard to call mixed in with some very lopsided potential batterings and BOTH versions of Bill Savage making an appearance - but which will survive?

Just like the matchup between Brink and Shako that started Wednesday this one is a real example of how the Prog has developed over the years. Bill Savages second appearance this week, this time in his earlier incarnation, which reached Round 3 by seeing off Joe Black will face an interesting challenge here against modern classic and folk horror wonder that is Thistlebone which was bewitched Tempest last round. Will nostalgia be enough to fuel a prog 1 thrill?

Vs

Invasion - more info (https://shop.2000ad.com/series/invasion)

Just reply in this thread naming your favourite thrill of these two series at the beginning of your post (or use Bold tags so I can spot it easily) and say what you like about these wonderful stories after that.

Match ends early on the morning of Sunday 19th June and the winner gets a place in Round 4 (of 9!!!).

What on Earth is ALL of this? (https://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?topic=48011.0)

For those that need 'um and can be bothered to follow 'um there's some simple rules (https://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?topic=48011.msg1070150#msg1070150)

Any questions, just ask as ever - and have FUN

Invasion is very of its time and, frankly, wasn't that amazing at the time. Savage is a much better interpretation of that basic theme. Thistlebone is horrible – which is the point. A solid slice of horror for the Prog, with some great art. Easy win.

Invasion.

Thistlebone is alright, but doesn't really do a whole lot for me I'm afraid.

I find it hard to vote against Invasion, bwecause its version of gleeful, death-dealing and righteous Bill Savage is so core to what I thinki makes 2000AD such a fun comic.

But actually re-reading it any more than one or two episodes at a time is kind of a chore.

Thistlebone on the other hand is a story I can lose myself in, and its own brand of creeping dread is also a core 2000AD feature.

So, Thistlebone.

I think IP is spot on here. Thistlebone for me too please.

Savage (before it became him guest-starring in the proto-Ro-Busters, at any rate) was better than Invasion.

Thistlebone is better than either. Could be a movie or two.

You'd be hard pressed to get two more different thrills.

Invasion is very much classic early 2000AD. But I wasn't reading it then, and so it doesn't have the protection of nostalgia for me. I only read it years later in an Extreme edition. And I think that wasn't complete. I bought a (more?) complete version in a recent digital sale, but haven't read any more than about 3 episodes. As Alex says, it's not something you can read a whole load of episodes in one sitting. And here's the thing: it's actually not that good.

Thistlebone is the polar opposite. It's doesn't read well week to week. It's absolutely made to read in one sitting. And when you do, you don't mind that not much happens in any given 5 pages. It's not about that. It's much more atmospheric. And you no longer wonder who the bloke with the white beard and a pint of bitter is who appeared in two panels 5 weeks ago.

So very much a modern 2000AD thrill. Not sure if "modern classic" is too much.

Overall Thistlebone takes it.

Yeah in a Savage vs Invasion tie I'd definitely be voting Savage.

That's not the tie we've got though and in this one I'll be voting Thistlebone.

Agree with some posters above. Invasion is a key early 2000ad concept but the individual episodes aren't that great. I read them all for the first time in the Ultimate Collection and it was a bit of a slog.

Thistlebone I quite like. Need to read it all in one go I think but it looks great (although personally I wasn't keen on the more cartoony style used for the scout camp flashbacks), has tremendous atmosphere and some great creepy moments. Don't think it would have gone down well in the initial 2000ad lineup! But I'm enjoying having it around in the present day.

Invasion. I don't "get" Thistlebone, then again, not really one for the horror genre.

Seems pretty clear that nostaglia will not win the day here. I'll wrap up the week tomorrow, you can still vote today.

VOTING CLOSED

Nostalgia couldn't rally too much resistance here. The same has been seen a number of times as Prog 1 thrills have been falling aside. Only Harlem Heroes remains - with MACH 1 still to come. Here a modern classic in the making sweep the voting country and only meeting pockets of fighting back from shooter (and duck) wielding rebels.

Thistlebones

will be seen at the edge of your perspection in Round 4.
