Well a very significant week in the tournament as we enter Round 3 after the seemingly unending Round two. We’re down to the last 128 thrills and from here the quality will step up, but the choices start to get harder. But the lovely thing about this round is there is still plenty of room for mis-matches…

Two classic thrills known for having distinct periods. Dan Dare who conquered Hewligan’s Haircut in Round 2 (after a bye in the 1st round) time in the Prog was more condensed, with Belardinelli madness, quickly followed by ‘Space Fortress’ which led into Space claw. We each have our fav. Robo-Hunter - who s.l.a.y.e.d. Bob the Galactic Bum - has its classic period, which is surely 98% of folks memory of the series; Millar muck and Hogan healing. The key question here I suppose do folks just ignore the eras they don’t like?

Prog / Prog 2281 - Guilt Trip
« on: 09 May, 2022, 09:09:48 PM »
Back to the Prog proper and a shift in line-up. Not a massive one, but enough to feel the difference.

Dredd Niemand and Foster return to Asher, the ex-Titan con. Who while working on a cleaning duty, see some slack judging that could be indicitive of much more. Its a gloriously steady start with the first twist of tension, this one will be getting much tighter I suspect.

Brink a police interview, Maslow calls HSD bluff and Bardot pays a price. dpesn't sound much but its brilliant.

Hope more interviews, more insights into 'Hollywoods' underbelly, more dark consequences - see above.

Dexter this thrill might be suffering from choppy scheduling, might be being trampled under it ambition being stifled but openers like this, with its grim forboding allow us to at least see the potential that we lost. Great episode.

Fiends Ouch! Its all chains and poking and burning and nasty... see above.

Like this one. Titanic ants in what now must be unarguably GFD’s greatest work (ahem); Ant Wars having taken out Cal-Hab Justice and then Zancudo in a one-sided local derby. While the short lived Mayflies has only had to buzz past Detonator X and the derided Wireheads. Who will triumph in this clash of the insects?

…not this first tie however as we get two fantastic thrills coming head to head; exemplifying some of the really tough decisions that will need to be made. Both of these had byes in Round 1 and have experienced tricky ties in Round 2, Leatherjack beating another classic self contained story Chiaroscuro; Hope having to take down Young Death. For one this will be a contest too tough…

General / Forum's Favourite Thrill - Round 3
« on: 08 May, 2022, 10:44:10 AM »
Soooooo Round 2 saw 256 thrills face off over 128 ties, which covered the best part of 5 months... yes 5 f*~@kin' months. I'm nothing if not relentless.

We saw some pretty horrible ties and the world isn't fair as while thrills like Dry Run and the Rogue Trooper Reboot will feature in Round 3, some stone cold GREAT thrills have fallen already. Devlin Waugh, Stainless Steel Rat, Zombo Hershey, Hewligan's Haircut will not grace this round. The draw is a cruel, unforgiving beast.

So what will Round 3 look like... well pretty much exactly the same to be honest, you'll barely notice the difference. I type (or Copy and Paste if I'm hones) Round 3 instead of Round 2 at the end of each thread title. Look out for the thrilling addition hey. I mean its shorter as well, thank f**k, but that's about it!

There are 128 Thrills left - Meaning 64 ties.

I estimate with a fair wind behind us that it will take us 8 weeks and we’ll be done… that should take us into mid July... if we start now…

...as I say above I'm nothing if not relentless so we'll do just that and I'll see ya Monday!

21
And we’ve done it… we’ve made it… the final week of the seemingly unending Round 2. It amazes me that we’ve stayed the distance, not killed each other over the course of these last 16 weeks, our love persists and maybe we need to take a break before charging headlong into anything else? I mean this week ends on a doozy, maybe we should take a break there and reflect…. Orrrr….

…see ya Monday for Round 3!

So here we are the final tie of the Round and what a doozy it is. In preparation for Round 3 we will have to get used to losing thrills we love and this ties exemplifies this. Two very different thrills, arguably at opposite ends of the thrill-spectrum both great BUT ONE MUST DIE… or at least get knocked out. Get used to this, Round 3 is going to be this brutal a LOT more often.

Final day and two blinders to end on. Sooner or Later is a McCarthy & Milligan delight, so of its time and yet so timeless. Very different and yet perfectly in place in 2000ad. Ampney Crucis shone bright and inter-dimensional and seemed to drop-off. Both are fantastically interesting and neither deserves to fall at this stage BUT we’re ramping up the pressure to get ready for Round 3 here.

Mean Machine has appeared in many places in Thrill’s Thrill-palace but here we are talking the stories that fell under his own banner. Psychedelic trip of a thrill butts heads with the Angel Gangs’ most mechanical son, we all know how that’s going to end right…

The final thrill to be elevated from the Regened to Prog ‘proper’ in Round 2 against a curious Megazine story that had lovely art by Kev Cullen and one of the more intriguing leads ever to grace Tharg’s thrill-omelete … and that’s really saying something!

How many times have I hailed a modern thrill being the flag bearer of Tharg’s current crop of series? Too many, far too many some would say BUT has it ever been more true than for Brink. An absolute stonewall modern classic… except to those who think it's a slow moving exercise in talking heads… does Mercy Heights, ER with ET, have a chance against it either way?

Two top draw thrills here in one of the tougher clashes in this round… or is it. Return to Armageddon seems to have the billing of the forgotten classic BUT that gets said enough that I think it's safe to say it's no longer forgotten? It's just rightfully seen as a classic. Durham Red has many iterations, and indeed these were subject to one of Broodbliks Sideshow votes recently. Will this diversity be a strength or will it dilute the impact of the thrill for folks?

VCs, popular thrill and a dark horse to do well in this Tourney. Sure its not GFD’s best, we’ve established that’s Ant Wars … right… anyway… lovely art and a very popular series. Going to storm Round 2 by the look, but how far can it go?

Penultimate week, just two weeks to go - which if you consider that we started this Round in January is quite something. Enjoy these dog days of Round 2 as while we have some meaty ties in these last two weeks it's going to be nothing compared to some of the sinkers you will have in Round 3. You’ll look back at the easy days and decisions you’ve had to make in Round 2 with fondness. Just check out Funt Solo’s wonderful Round 2 so far thread to get a sense of what Round 3 will be…

Nice tie to end the week. These may be second tie thrills, but they are good fondly remembered second tier thrills and so this one could get interesting.

Now fair to say that Samantha Slade’s time in as the led in Robo-Hunter is pretty much a direct sequel to Sam’s and as such since I’ve lumped Inferno in with the original Harlem Heroes why on earth haven’t I done the same here.
