Penultimate week, just two weeks to go - which if you consider that we started this Round in January is quite something. Enjoy these dog days of Round 2 as while we have some meaty ties in these last two weeks it's going to be nothing compared to some of the sinkers you will have in Round 3. You’ll look back at the easy days and decisions you’ve had to make in Round 2 with fondness. Just check out Funt Solo’s wonderful Round 2 so far thread to get a sense of what Round 3 will be…

Look before you all start rushing to vote for DreadNoughts I just want you to stop, and reflect a moment. Demon Nic is by Paul Grist one of the great british comicbook creators. I mean one of the absolute greats. He’s produced some of the best UK comics, Jack Flagg, Kane, Mudman and more. Demon Nic is pretty damned good… okay you can carry on voting with the brilliant new thrill DreadNoughts now…

Now this would have been an astonishingly interesting tie if it’d been the Rogue Trooper (reboot) not regular Rogue… but it's not… and a clash between two rubbish thrills isn't really ‘astonishing’ interesting is it!    … so I’ll shut up there. As it is Old Rogue still has a massive reputation (even if… and I whisper this… think it's pretty rubbish) so we know what’s going to happen here right…

Modern thrill launched from the Regened, but which has really become something else entirely with a magnificent main Prog outing or series based off the abortive attempt to oust Tharg that really should have been strangled in the cradle as the X-Files inspired editors were chased out of the Nerve Centre. Alas the series of one-offs carried on for quite some time after… I’m letting bias creep in a bit here aren’t I?

Two off Mega City One Dredd world tales here (remembering when we are thinking Chimpsky it's just his solo series not his appearances in Dredd). Anyone who bothers to wade through my comments here will know which way I think it's Aperopriate to vote, but I quite like Breathing Space too.

One day the secret history of the Forum’s Favourite Thrill will be written and in that expose you will read of the horrible events that mean that Meltdown Man almost didn’t make it into Round 2 due to an error and Storm Warning appearing twice… Tharg only knows why… the panic this created, the ingenuity in solution and then the hilarity of almost missing out and then getting Stalag 666. I mean Nick and co aren’t going to be missing from Round 3 are they!

Which isn’t to say this is going to be easy and the first tie of this week shows some of the qualities we have been dealing with in this round. They might be second tier thrills but both of these are great and it's going said to see one go. Warming up for Round 3 then!

Three weeks and counting and some interesting thrills appear. Ones that I think are great and widely loved but might have one factor or another that might stop them going as far as they otherwise might? This Round I’m not sure this will be tested toooo much but good to see how they will fare.

Maelstrom isn’t Vanguard, Maelstrom isn’t Vanguard, Maelstrom isn’t Vanguard. I mean neither is The Taxidermist that’s a wonderfully off-centre JD world thrill by Wagner and Gibson, but then I didn’t mix those two up in the first round… Maelstrom isn’t Vanguard….

Two great if possibly overlooked stories here. Second City Blues is one of those thrills that just doesn’t seem to get the love but personally I think its great. A functioning future sports story that flips itself and becomes something else as well. BUT Shadows is probably the thrill that places most overtly with Pete Milligan’s trump card of identity. Like Firekind, it’s a well loved self-contained story. Will that inhibit it going far?

Interestingly these two appear next to each other when you alphabetise all the stories in this round… it is interesting… yesss it is….

Dredd villains derbyish here…I mean it's the kinda Liverpool vs Man U, Nottingham v Derby type Derby. It's not really a Derby but its close enough.  Judge Death is just the solo named stories remember. Think Frazer Irving.

Last of the Prog 1 stories finally shows up and it will be interesting to see how it does. Nostalgia doesn’t seem to have served these stories as well as I thought it might. Its superior reboot though took a notable scalp earlier in the Round, in possibly toughest tie to date (against Devlin Waugh) so is there a lot of Bill Savage love out there? Surely enough to wack a rat?

Chopper is a right ol’ mixed some of its great, some if it… less so shall we say. As a character though he’s top draw. Straitjacket Fits… well… it has… Roger Langridge art…

So we missed a Cabs spin-off local derby by the spin of one… well randomly generated computer pick. I’m probably relieved that Absalom avoided The Diaboliks but it would have been a top draw tie. As it is, those devilish villains get O’Rork instead which is… less interesting…

Tough one this one as I really like Atavar. As a piece of hard sci-fi it really worked. Each ‘book’  felt satisfyingly self-contained and bespoke yet it built to a solid whole. How though will it compete against a modern classic like Absalom. The Caballistics Inc ‘spin-off(ish)’ was so focused in the story it wanted to tell and yet never felt constrained. So I fear for Atavar, but can there be any other result…let’s find out….

First example of this is Firekind? Is Firekind the most popular self-contained story in 2000ad history*? If that guess is right, how much will the fact it's a done and gone series impact on its ability to compete against thrills that are equally admired but have more volume? Not sure American Reaper will test that too much.

Film & TV / Kids in the Hall - coming back via Amazon Prime
« on: 14 April, 2022, 05:35:03 PM »
Anyone remember Kids in the Hall? A canadian comedy show from the late 80s early 90s - I squish your head - and all that. Well if you do I suspect you do so fondly and its coming back AND I've just discovered all the old episodes are available via Amazon Prime.

So I watched the first episode - pretty nervously wondering how well it'd aged - and damnit its still really, really funny - all be it with some pretty unfortunate bits that don't stand up to todays more aware standards. In and of itself though still absolutely hilarious. Well based on the first episode at least.

So yeah new episodes coming soon!
