After watching the film a couple of times and seeing extra bits each time, whether that be block names, graffiti, posters, gang jackets and all the little nuances that are on screen from the characters. It's got me thinking of what we would like to see on the Ultimate Disc!
The Box
First off, the collector inside me wants at least one Limited Edition Tin Box version and this could have one of those lenticular pictures on the front. That Motion Poster would look good on the cover, or something similar!
I suppose they could do what Kick Ass did and have a window where you could slide in the cover you wanted, from the cards that they included in the box. They could have Dredd, Anderson, Ma-Ma and Lex!
At the very least I would like to see an inlay card (how many discs have nothing nowadays) or a small booklet inside. This could contain basic info and a few pictures.
If we did get a Limited Edition, it would be great if they made a certain amount available to the forum, through sales via the site. So we didn't miss out, depending on how many are produced!
The Disc
I hope they will include a 2D version with the 3D version, so we don't have to buy another separate disc.
Contents
Commentaries :- Wagner and Garland - Travis and Anthony Dod Mantle
Making of section :- Boot Camp - Stunts - Sets and Locations - CGI - Weapons and Uniform - Lawmaster - Art - Etc...
Profiles of Characters :- Not just the main three but as many as possible.
Script :- Rough to shooting version
Preview Comic :- Would be nice and would help out people who haven't seen it!
Easter Egg Locations :- This could be like they do on MTV and place a box on screen at the time it comes up saying where it is and what it's from (the what it's from is for those who won't know). They could do it with a circle around it, like they do on the sport on tv but I would prefer a box myself!
Interview Selection :- If possible a few of the most informative interviews that have been seen (I suppose the rights would get in the way of this)
Blooper Reel :- Does what it says!
That's the sort of stuff I would like to see on a DREDD disc but I'm sure things are already in motion. I'm sure I've missed some ideas off, so anyone else have any ideas of what they would love to see on the disc!
Cover by Jock?
A 2D version is a no-brainer, releasing a 3D only disc would be commercial suicide.
I suppose I should have written that down as 'include the 3D in with the 2D' as that is what I meant :-[
I'd love an alternate Jock cover, maybe for the limited edition or something. That would be sweeeeeeeet.

If you're gonna make it tin I'd vote make it shaped like a Lawgiver Magazine. :)
Nice idea ;)
By far the most important thing for me is the actual film it's self. I want it presented in the true letterbox aspect ratio,2.35. Nothing is more important.
NOTHING.
None of this 1.85 rubbish or even worse 1.78 like with the Avengers disc. Not half as cinematic as a full widescreen experience.
After that a nice making of and a commentary by with John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra.
Aspect ratio though first and foremost.
And I know it depends how a film is filmed to what ratio is gets etc and I know there are other ratios(2001 is mega wide),but the letter box classic 2.35 is what I'm after, same as Jaws,Star Wars....

USB DREDD BADGE with movie on it :)
Actor commentary too - I want to hear Urban and Thirlby and Headey definitely, and others in a separate interview section. Wanna hear Lex explain his backstory, his meaning the bad judges, how they came to be that way and what Dredd had done upto that point to make him extra cautious.
I'm a 'no' for a fancy box - they never match up with each other and it looks scruffy with all the different bits poking out.
I would like a subtitle reel pointing stuff out - the 'Spaced' DVD did this with a 'Homage-a-meter' better still would be a pop up video style track with things of interest being pointed out.
How about a fan commentary with me pointing out things I'd spotted and other things I'd missed but have since misappropriated from the more alert?

Yeah i'd be against the tin box but only because i don't keep dvd boxes though i'd back the collecters getting a limited edition tin box, just not for me.
Otherwise all bells and whistles for the Blu-ray disks themselves and maybe some secret online content that connected to the forums in some way.

this was mentioned in the threads about the preview screening - was it a joke, or is it actually a possibility. I would LOVE to see Minty included as an extra!
I think it was in the message board Q&A, Garland said he wanted 'some Minty material' to be included on the DVD, but he isn't in charge of such things.
Would e bloody amazing if it was on there though.
+1 for a lovely limited edition steel book case - I'm really addicted to those and an building up quite a collection.

Dredd `Helmet`case-a bit like this:http://www.amazon.com/Halo-3-Legendary-Edition-Xbox-360/dp/B000K8ZTK8
Want - in no particular order,
1. Deleted/extended scenes.
2. Wagner/Ezquerra commentary.
3. Concept art by Jock et al. (as much as is humanly possible to fit onto the disc)
4. Killer sound and vision.
5. Gotta be a two discer, as well
They should arm each case with explosives and if you try open someone else's it does an i.d fail and explodes.
Only joking, quite happy for just the standard stuff. Perhaps do one with a 3D hologram cover, and it comes with those shitty cardboard 3D glasses. Also, releasing it on vhs would be pretty cool.
Or do a limited version for the forum board to buy that comes with a unique cool item, like a little prop from the film or one of Ma-Ma's teeth. I know that would never happen, but I can dream can't I?
And a hit of Slo-Mo... ;)

Does anyone know if there is the possibility of a different / extended cut?
Some digital comics would be a nice touch too.
Link, I believe they pretty much used every last bit of footage in the film as we saw it, even had to splice together some earlier shots of Anderson to get what they wanted towards the end. So I wouldn't expect any multiple endings.
Chees Stu, wasn't aware of that.
They did bloody well with what they had so...
Yeah, they really didn't have much excess by the sounds of it.
I think the only known deleted scene (if it was shot) would be the scene that was re-shot in Colindale from near the beginning.

Which just ends outside on the street - according to the script - rather than going anywhere. The reshoots last Christmas added stuff like Ma-Ma's bomb plot (I'm guessing as it's not in the leaked script).

Yeah, that bit came as a surprise to me.. But it looked like it was shot in the Cape Town set, so I doubt it was a reshoot.

Very agree, if cuts them, film would be lack as Power Rangers?
Yes, the kids are perfectly fine with exploding heads thanks. Also computer generated carnage as bullets go through flesh and the cg redstuff splashes over the screen. They proclaim this 'cool!'.
However, i really dont want them watching films with 'muthafucka' in, or the hero saying 'shit' when 'stomm' wouldve been a funnier joke. Similarly, im not about to introduce them to sexualised violence. But hey, listen, to be honest i didnt really like Dredd. Im not fussed they cant see it, as i dont think it was very good and came across as rather desperate. I was just making a humorous plea for the movie to recognise a wider-audience once it had its shot at the box office.

My wishlist for the blu-ray, other than the movie itself: animated short film.
Doooo it. Maybe Punks Rule or something, done in five minutes, doooo it.
I'd love:
cast and crew interviews
deleted scenes
making of documentary
featurettes including Urban lobbying for this role, training, becoming the character, etc. Same sort of highlights for Ma-Ma and Anderson.
Cast and film-maker commentary
And include a digital copy of the Ma-Ma prequel comic.
i would love Olivia Thirlby to deliver mine .......
Seeing as how Dredd has fared at the box office, I suspect a bare-bones single disc is the likeliest result. There'll probably be a few scant 'making of' type docs, but that'll be it. They're unlikely to throw a lot of resources at the home release for a movie few people saw.
Packaging will most likely be bog standard - quite similar to the mockup above I'd imagine. Entertainment UK tend to produce quite ugly packaging for their releases imo.
If it sells well, I expect we'll get a special edition further down the line - with any luck a steelbook with that Jock art on the cover, and maybe a few more features.
Alex Garland has already pretty much ruled out doing a commentary track.
Wasnt it said, on one of the threads, that the extras had largely already been produced?

Box-Office performance doesn't dictate DVD features.
For instance, look at John Carter.
It didn't make enough money at the BO.
But it's release had: • Disney Second Screen • 360 Degrees of John Carter • Deleted Scenes with Optional Commentary by Director Andrew Stanton • Bloopers • Making of Documentary • Audio Commentary with Film Makers[/quote]

Doesn't alter the illustration.
But if you want, fine....
"Punisher: War Zone" was also a flop.
It's release featured: Director & Cinematographer Commentary, Making of featurette, a Featurette on Dominic West and the character he played, a featurette on the tech, gear, props, and weapons of the film, a feature documenting the training process for Ray Stevenson becoming The Punisher, and even a feature detailing the films unique color scheme.
And THAT was a flop that was also distributed by Lionsgate, just like Dredd.
So, there ya go.
A Free Comic would be nice. Like one of Dredd's one-shot, self contained 5-pagers. One of the Cliff Robinson's would be my choice (they really should collect them all together), but a brand-new 'exclusive to the DVD' comic would be even better.
So do you think it will be out for Christmas as it didn't do well?
Lawless has just been announced on Blu-Ray in the US for November 27th, that came out on August 29th there and September 7th here.
Maybe we'll see an announcement this week!
Let's hope they don't announce it just yet. I would wait for the theatrical release to be over before letting people know the date of it's release.
What I'm really hoping for is for the Blu-ray to have the film on it. This has the added benefit that hoping for something that's basically guaranteed comes with a very low chance of disappointment.
I'd be happy for a Monday 3rd December release. This wouldn't have anything to do with my 40th Birthday or anything, absolutely nothing at all ;)
A forum commentary track (you know you'd kill to get in on that one and no one here's short of a comment or two).
Option to have Goaty signing in a small box on the screen.
So, now that the date has been announced, how soon does anyone guess we'll start hearing about what features it might have?

22nd Jan has been talked about in the US, but as US DVD's, and most things in general, get released on a Tuesday it's possible that the UK release date will be the 21st. I can't remember seeing anyone mention anything about this US date actually being official?
You never know given we got the movie two weeks earlier we might get the DVD a bit sooner as well? I'd say it's fair to assume a January release date though.

I still think a February release is more likely than anything else. But what do I know.
Regardless. "Speculative" seemed appropriate for a "wish list" post.

Looks like its not on the Christmas list then, but it'll be nice to have something to look forward to.
Does anyone remember how long it took the Stallone version to come out on VHS?...it was a looooong time, it must have been a year or more. I thought that was very odd.
I remember that when the Syallone one came out on video, the Megazine came with a free (half) video sleeve for... some reason?
I think that was meant to be used as emergency toilet paper when the world was in upheaval ;)
From bitter experience I can confirm it was far too shiny to be used for that purpose.....
During my early army days we had that thin, shiny toilet paper. The joke was that it was so hard, that it took shit from no one!
Remember that, like grease proof paper my nan used to use to line cake tins.
That was exactly it! Don't just wipe your arse clean, why not smear your shit all over it instead
As an ex squaddie myself I think the proper way to use the old army issue paper (which was like tracing paper for your bum) was to to tear out a circle in the middle of the sheet remembering to keep this piece for later. Then put finger through hole in sheet wipe bum with finger, then pull paper off finger to wipe shit off finger. Finally use small circular piece of paper to get shit from under fingernail.
Thank god for Andrex!
Ahem anyway back to blu ray features - the disc should come absolutely loaded with features as they really need to make this disc sell well so we can get a damn sequel! I'm hoping for an extensive making of documentary with loads of interviews from both cast and crew. I also want numerous commentaries and some web content too.
IZAL!!!!! Or as it should be called..AAAAAAAARGHH!!!!
(Wandered off topic a bit, eh? :o))
yeah ! i think its BOX standard in this country. I have fond memories of the
Go fast toilet paper, which was usually accompanied with the bright red BLOOD soap ( CARBOLIC )
I think that having the 2D Blu-ray packaged with the 3D Blu-ray and not as separate individual formats is a bit shitty considering the number of comments about the lack of 2D cinema showings and the number of people on here, and in other online places, who have issues with 3D and missed the film in theaters because of this and have said they're going to wait for the home release.
For Dredd I'd make the Blu-ray punt, I normally just buy DVDs, but given that I'm going to be paying for a format I'll never ever use, I think it'll be DVD for me. Hmm, or maybe I could have the 3D disc as a funky Dredd coaster...
I doubt you're paying extra for it, it's only £17 for the lot which to be honest I would have expected to pay for the Blu-Ray anyway.it's not like people complain when Blu-Rays include a dvd copy and a digital copy, it's just a bonus in the package and it's there if you ever want to use it.
I don't own a 3D tv but I'm not going to say no to an extra copy of the film being bundled in for seemingly no extra cash.
Plus, given that the film's box office has been so poor I really wouldn't expect them to release it in a number of different editions because they likely don't expect sales to be high enough to justify it (although I'm sure it'll do great on Blu-Ray).
Den of Geek! are 'banging the drum' for Dredd again... They declare that the 'DVD & 3D Blu-ray (with 2D transfer) will arrive in the UK on the 14th January 2013. They also state that 'while they don't know what extra material will be provided with the release, they'd argue that the film itself is well worth supporting.'
Stew.
What some have already said - pricewise it's comparable to a 2D Bluray, most 3D blurays are £20 at least.
FFS Fox used to sell their Star Wars VHS copies at £17 20-odd years ago.
Plus, it'll drop in price to a more sensible level in no time. I'm not pre-ordering yet as they'll doubtless be better deals (and just maybe an exclusive edition...) available closer to release.
It does bug me slightly - Dredd is a great example of a really smart, superior film being marketed and paraded around like a cheap, gimmicky B Movie. Forcing people to buy the 3d disc will no doubt further anger people who are already annoyed about the lack of 2d showings.
As for 3d, I've no interest whatsoever in buying a 3dTV, and if I ever buy a TV with that function, it will probably go unused.
Interestingly, I just noticed that Dredd is sitting at no. 8 in Amazon's bestselling Blu Rays, no. 3 in the pre-orders only chart, and no. 52 in overall Film & TV. That's not a bad sign so far out from release. Neither Play.com nor Amazon.com have it for sale yet.

That's may not be the case though as the 3D & 2D versions could well be on the same disc as plenty of Blu-Rays have a 2D encode which allows the discs to be viewed in any player. It's cheaper to put out both formats on one disk than separate ones.
Fair point. I'd still be a little annoyed if the film's title is 'Dredd 3D' on the packaging though, 'Dredd' would look way smarter on the shelf.
That would be gay. It's not listed on amazon as Dredd 3D, but as they don't have the box art or anything I guess it could still change.
I didn't mind the strong focus on 3D but putting it in the title was just naff.

All good points. I'd still feel dirty endorsing the 3D format when it's being forced on us. But I do get what you're saying. Maybe I'll just wait for the price to go down.
I don't think I'll ever go down the 3D telly route. My next investment would be for a Hologram one.
Luckily for me the inlaws have a 3D telly and they didn't even know it until the bloke installed it
Very sad to see I won't get to sit around the living room watching Dredd with my pa this Christmas. Cannot come out on DVD/Blu Ray soon enough for me.
My question is this: any news on extras that will be on the release? Would love to hear a commentary w/ Garland and Wagner and Urban and Thirlby. Especially after hearing Urban speak during the TIFF premiere.
Anybody got news on this? Should we start a suggestion thread? Would anyone at 2000ad listen?
Also, why is the world not fair and Dredd 3D didn't blow up at the box office despite being a fine fine film?
Its been said that the bulk of the extra's (whatever they may be) were produced and finished ages ago.
And i think Mr Garland ruled himself out of doing a comentary, if i remember correctly.
Some of the featurettes popping up on-line, for Dredd, would certainly make for good extras. So hopefully summat along those lines - SFX breakdowns et al, will be appearing.
There is a thread on suggestions for extras on the shiny disc!

There are thousands of adjectives in the English language. Please try to pick one that doesn't make you look like a bigoted cunt.

They're screenshots taken from one of the Prime Focus FX videos.
well spotted Joe . YEAH !
I'd really like to get a hold of the storyboard, comic art, magazine , whatever that goes with this movie. Hopefully it's coming out soon ...
Does anyone have any details from JOCK ???
obviously this is the cover
Man, those story boards are nice! I hope they get released as a comic. Maybe it could be a cool extra for a 'special edition'

The use of the word 'gay' as a derogatory term is questionable, to say the least.
Apologies if my own language was a bit extreme I shouldn't type while angry. Homophobic or racist language is offensive to myself and many others, and I won't let it go unchallenged.
And why have you edited my quotation of you to subistiitute an entirely different part of the post in the quoted section? I think it was quite obvious which part I was objecting to.
That could be just the way the quote function works. i never get it right.
For clarity, Mr Eliminator (and everybody for that matter): Please don't use the word "gay" as a derogatory term. It's offensive.

Well sorry, but I think it was quite clear in the context of the post it wasn't intended to offend anybody. It's just slang.

Intent doesn't come into it. Unless you thinks it's OK for me to go around talking about niggers and pakis and brush off any criticism as "well, it's just slang"...?
Well ok, I get your point but still, no one thought this bit was funny in Shaun of the dead? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5DUpIZR3ao (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5DUpIZR3ao)
I won't use the phrase anymore, but I still don't think it's really that offensive.

and by tiny steps, the world becomes a nicer place! Peace bro, and I'm sorry for my OTT deployment of the C-bomb. :)
I guess a lot depends on context, I just know that if I was out with my mates and someone used the word in that way there'd be, at best, an awkward silence; or if any of my gay aqcquaintances were present, an unholy row!
Really interesting re: this gay thing. Is it generational? I've never in my life known anybody to bat an eyelid and I hear it multiple times on a daily basis. It's so ubiquitous I don't think we even think about what it means any more.
I certainly know a lot of people who use "Gay" a bit overfrequently and it always pisses me off - I do however, think that's just an unfortunate generational slippage -
I mean - when I was a kid everyone said "that's gay" as in "that's bad" and the older I got the less witty or even appropriate it seemed to equate gayness with "badness"- I know a lot of people my age who still use it and I think it's pretty stupid. I mean there was this whole thing with, Stonewall I think it was who issued badges saying "Homophobia is Gay" but then it got a load of complaints because using gay in that sense isn't so clever. In any sense.
But people who bandy around "f**got" deserve a serious kick in the face.
There was a myspace horror group I frequented a few years back, and a gay bloke who was also a regular there once told somebody off for using the word in that way. Unfortunately, he did so by saying "That's homophobic, you retard!"

That looks amazing! Hope so too... HMV and FOPP only doing steelcase of Blu-Ray... fingercrossings.
Dredd didn't even get released in France; looks like they're trying to make up for it.
Wonder is it a mistake that the DVD edition of the film reads as 3 minutes shorter.
I really like that cover with the metallic grey font.

Frig's sake. There's a lot of customers in France!
The discrepancy between the French DVD and the French Blu-ray is probably NOT a mistake.
What is more, there will be a similar discrepancy in running time between the Blu-ray and DVD releases of "Dredd" (and any other movie) in all other Mainland Europe contries, and the UK for that matter. If any European distributor puts the exact same running time on the Blu-ray and DVD release of the same movie, they are just being lazy because it's not correct.
There are no cuts mind you, the movie is exactly the same; there is a technical issue at play here:
The PAL speedup effect. Anything filmed in 24 fps will be sped up by 4 % when played back on any PAL based video system - including all European DVDs. Blu-ray's however aren't PAL, and so this speedup doesn't affect them.

While the PAL effect would apply depending on the nature and fps of the DVD masters and where they're manufactured - the film was shot
digitally in South Africa, a 50Hz country, so it would've been shot at 25fps with no need for cumbersome US 60Hz 24pull-down or dropping frames required in post. Post-production was all done in London so it would've been finished at 25fps too. Any other mastering would have presumably been done for each respective region and format from those masters but the PAL version shouldn't be any different from the blu-ray since the film master should be native 25fps unless the DVDs are being taken from DVD masters converted to 24fps for the US market.
