Well, saying I don't partake in that particular action from time to time would be , lets be honest here, flat out lying- so not much of an insult.

I'd say Moorcocks fantasy work is more "Totally prog rock" than "wankily intelectual", though I admit the distinction may get a little vague.

I think Dudley has the answer to his original question....  

I dont think we are comparing like with like, between Moorcock and Tolkien.  Other than they share the high fantasy bracket.  
Tolkien spent his time trying to create an epic myth of sorts.  Moorcock tries to link an epic endless struggle between order and chaos.  I think, its years since I read either.  They both work in places, but dont in others.

I also think Tolkien often gets bashed, he is somethig of an easy target.  Not being around to diss "little england" rumours or defend himself outwith the period it was written, open to modern or post modern (mis)interpretation.

One of the best things said about the films, is that although not faithful, they are dull in the same places....
